It’s that time of year again (and how fast did that year go!). December is on our door step and it’s time to take stock of where we stand twelve months on into the HIV /AIDS situation here in Bali and indeed Indonesia.
So what is going on?
The Health Department of Bali has recorded at least 996 total cases of HIV-AIDS cases up until May 2015. Of those, 622 people are known to be HIV positive, while 374 people are in the advanced to the stage of AIDS. The department has recorded only 15 deaths. But are these statistics realistic?
If you consider that other statistics claim that approximately 75% of Bali’s 6,000 sex workers are HIV positive and that there are at least 4,500 HIV positive prostitutes on the Island, the figures quoted by the Bali Health Department are a gross understatement and almost laughable.
Add to this the clients of the sex workers, (and no, they don’t wear condoms), the wives of the clients of the sex workers, the children of the HIV positive mothers, injectable drug users and so on, we can see that the health department statistics are indeed just the tip of a very big ice-berg.
(Oh and for those of you that are interested, most of HIV positive sex workers resided in the tourist area of Sanur, followed by Kuta and belong to the age group of 19-39 years).
The promiscuous behavior in this country is seeing a major shift of new HIV cases from sex-workers to housewives. According to the Indonesian Planned Parenthood Association it further indicates that the transmission of HIV / AIDS is no longer transmitted outside the home, but it occurs in the home. The high number of housewives exposure indicates the number of male partners transmit HIV / AIDS to the family.
The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) in co-operation with the Hong Kong Red Cross are aware of this and have implemented an education program for the Balinese people on preventing HIV/AIDS and encouraged them to make lifestyle changes by avoiding drugs and risky sexual practices involving multiple partners, sex workers, as well as implementing the use of condoms, avoiding narcotic drug use, and early testing and treatment with ARV medication.
The Red Cross program has come none-too-soon as Australian based HIV/AIDS programs have been withdrawn from Indonesia (incl Bali) as from October this year. Australia does know we still have a problem, as obviously with a total estimate of as many as 750,000 people living with HIV in Indonesia, we still do. However the HIV Indonesia assistance programs from Australia fell victim to a massive 40 % cut in foreign aid.

Education
The key to curbing the HIV epidemic is awareness. Make an effort to educate all those around you starting at home. Sudah waktunya ganti tahun lagi ( dan betapa cepatnya tahun itu berlalu! ) Sebentar lagi memasuki bulan Desember dan sudah waktunya untuk melihat kembali mengenai kedaan HIV / AIDS di sini , Bali ,Indonesia selama 12 bulan ini.
Apakah yang terjadi ?
Departemen Kesehatan Bali mencatat bahwa setidaknya total dari 996 kasus kasus HIV - AIDS sampai Mei 2015. 622 orang diantaranya, diketahui positif HIV,sementara sisanya 374 orang sedangan dalam tahap lanjutan AIDS . Departemen Kesehatan hanya mencatat adanya 15 kematian .
Tetapi apakah Angka statistik ini realistis ?
Jika Anda menganggap bahwa angka statistik lainnya mengklaim bahwa sekitar 75 % dari 6.000 pekerja seks di Bali terkena positif HIV dan bahwa ada setidaknya 4.500 Pekerja seks terindikasi terkena HIV positif di pulau ini ,angka yang dikutip oleh Departemen Kesehatan Bali bisa dianggap berlebihan dan hampir menggelikan .
Angka Ini ditambahkan oleh ; pelanggan dari pekerja seks tersebut,(dan tidak.. mereka tidak memakai kondom)kemudian istri dari pelanggan pekerja seks tersebut , anak-anak dari ibu HIV positif , pengguna suntik narkoba dan sebagainya, kita bisa melihat bahwa statistik departemen kesehatan memang hanya puncak dari fenomena gunung es yang sangat besar.
(Oh, dan bagi anda yang ingin tahu, sebagian besar pekerja seks positif HIV tersebut tinggal di kawasan wisata Sanur,kemudian Kuta dan termasuk dalam kelompok usia 19-39 tahun ) .
Perilaku tidak pandang bulu di negara ini telah melihat adanya pergeseran besar dari kasus HIV baru dari pekerja seks kepada ibu rumah tangga . Menurut Asosiasi Keluarga Berencana Indonesia telah mengindikasi bahwa sejauh ini, penularan HIV / AIDS tidak lagi terjadi di luar rumah,tetapi terjadi di dalam rumah . Tingginya jumlah ibu rumah tangga yang terpapar, menunjukkan jumlah pasangan pria menularkan HIV / AIDS kepada keluarganya.
Palang Merah Indonesia ( PMI ) bekerjasama dengan Palang Merah Hong Kong, telah menyadari hal ini dan telah menerapkan program pendidikan bagi masyarakat Bali untuk mencegah HIV / AIDS dan mendorong mereka untuk membuat perubahan gaya hidup dengan menghindari pemakaian narkoba dan menhindari perilaku seksual yang berisiko dengan melibatkan beberapa partner , pekerja seks , serta menerapkan penggunaan kondom , menghindari penggunaan narkoba narkotika , dan melakukan pengetesan awal dan pengobatan dengan obat ARV .
Program PMI telah datang tepat waktu, tepat pada saat program HIV / AIDS dari Australia ditarik dari Indonesia (termasuk Bali ) sejak Oktober tahun ini .
Australia tahu bahwa kita masih memiliki masalah, karena sudah jelas, dengan perkiraan total sebanyak 750.000 orang yang hidup dengan HIV di Indonesia , kita masih punya masalah tersebut .
Namun program bantuan asing dari Autralia untuk HIV Indonesia telah menjadi korban pemotongan besar-besaran, sebesar 40 % dari bantuan asing.
