Entre a noite do dia 11 de janeiro e a manhã do dia seguinte, a Região Serrana do Estado do Rio de Janeiro sofreu seu maior temporal já registrado. O volume de chuva em 24 horas foi o esperado para um mês ê O resultado foi a maior tragédia climática de que já se teve na história do país.
Mais de 900 pessoas morreram, mais de 400 ainda estão desaparecidas e cerca de 30 mil sobreviventes ficaram desalojados. Deslizamentos de terra c enchentes destruíram centenas de residências e construções, como escolas, mercados e hospitais, além de deixarem dezenas de ruas interditadas. Serviços como água, luz e telefone foram interrompidos e bairros inteiros ficaram isolados durante alguns dias. Os hospitais que continuaram funcionando ficaram superlotados.
Cerca de duas semanas depois da catástrofe, doenças como a leptospirose começaram a assolar a população. As Secretarias municipais de Saúde das diversas localidades afetadas trabalharam exaustivamente fazendo campanhas de orientação para evitar uma epidemia.
As cidades de São José do Vale do Rio Preto, Nova Friburgo, Petrópolis, Sumidouro, Teresópolis, Bom Jardim e Areal foram as mais afetadas e decretaram estado de calamidade pública, tendo algumas de suas pontes destruídas e diversas de suas estradas inutilizadas. O governo e a sociedade civil se uniram para ajudar as vítimas e tentar reconstruir as cidades.
Por uma determinação da Presidente Dilma Rousseff, mais de 580 militares do Exército, Marinha e Aeronáutica foram designados para ajudar no socorro às vítimas. Também foram enviados 12 helicópteros e 74 viaturas pelas Forças Armadas e mais de 7 toneladas de medicamentos e insumos pelo Ministério da Saúde.

Translation - English SOLIDARITY IN THE TRAGEDY OF THE MOUNTAINOUS REGION OF RIO DE JANEIRO
Between the night of the day 11th of January and the morning of the following day, the Mountainous Region of the State of Rio de Janeiro suffered the largest storm ever registered. The volume of rain in 24 hours was the one expected for a whole month and the result was the largest climate tragedy ever heard in the country’s history.
More than 900 people died, more than 400 are still missing and about 30 thousand survivors were displaced. Landslides and storms destroyed hundreds of residences and constructions, as well as schools, markets and hospitals, and also left dozens of streets interdicted. Services like water, electricity and telephone were interrupted and entire neighborhoods were isolated for many days.
The hospitals that continued working were overcrowded. Roughly two weeks after the catastrophe, diseases like leptospirosis started to plague the population. The Municipal Secretariats of Health of the various locations affected worked thoroughly making guidance campaigns for avoiding an epidemic.
