When is a rule not a rule?
A FRIEND of mine recently posted on Facebook an article that began:
“Can I let you in on a secret? Typing two spaces after a period is totally, completely, utterly, and inarguably wrong.”
That the article is still being passed around, and has been shared on Facebook over 165,000 times, reveals a surprising passion on this issue. But the comments on my friend’s Facebook posting also reveal a slightly depressing willingness of people to be cowed by anyone who stands on an internet soapbox and declares inarguable rules. “Now you’ve set me straight,” one commenter wrote. Another was surprised at not having heard about the new rule earlier; her mother was, after all, “a grammarian at heart” and had taught her to be on the lookout for such things.
Well, I have a secret, too: pronouncing a diktat like “never use two spaces after a full stop” is not totally, completely, utterly and inarguably wrong—but it is mostly wrong.
Many people have the idea that absolutely everything to do with language is governed by strict rules. A corollary is that these rules must only leave one option. If one space is correct, then two spaces must be totally, completely, utterly and inarguably wrong.
The history of the dispute is simple enough: typesetters have been using one space after a full stop for most of a century. But people who learned to type on mechanical typewriters with monospaced fonts were taught to use two spaces, because monospaced fonts (in which all letters have the same width) leave white space on either side of skinny letters. So two spaces at the end of sentences was meant to convey meaningful (rather than meaningless) space on the page.
But can the vast number of professional writers and editors who learned the two-space habit be “inarguably wrong”? Is this really bad grammar? No, and no. Grammar has nothing to do with aesthetic issues like one space or two. Grammar has to do with how words hang together to make meaningful sentences accepted as correct by native speakers. Grammar has inarguable rules (the past tense of “I am” is “I was”). But it also has disputed ones.
When we talk about the two-space rule, we are not remotely near the territory of grammar. We’re barely in the territory of rules at all. The relevant concept here is not grammar but style. The one-space “rule” is not the kind that separates good writers from bad ones. It is rather for simple aesthetic consistency. In this, it belongs in a category of style choices.
Some people seem to think love for language means memorizing the longest possible list of grammar rules and style shibboleths. This is too often coupled with smug self-congratulation. But a real understanding of language acknowledges which rules are truly ironclad, which ones are in dispute and which ones are mere style choices. And style choices, by definition, cannot be wrong.

نشر صديق لى مؤخرا مقال على موقع التواصل الاجتماعى الفيس بوك والذى بدأ بالتالى :
" هل يمكننى ان أشاركك سر ؟ ترك مسافتين بعد التنقيط هو خطأ كامل, تام و متنازع عليه
هذه المقاله مازال هناك جدال حولها, وتم مشاركتها على موقع التواصل الاجتماعى الفيس بوك لأكثر من 165 الف مره, كاشفه عن شغف مدهش فى هذه المسأله. ولكن التعليقات على صفحات اصدقائى تكشف القليل من الرغبه المحبطه لدى الناس لاستياقهم من قبل اى من يقف على منصات الانترنت معلنا عن قواعد لا جدال فيها. " الآن قد هيأتنى مباشرة لذلك" كتبها معلق. معلقه أخرى كانت متفاجئه لعدم السماع عن القاعده الجديده باكرا من امها التى علمتها ان القواعد النحويه فى الصميم وان تكون على اطلاع دائما بتلك القواعد.
حسنا لدى سر أخر : بالحكم على القاعده الاملائيه مثل ’’ عدم استخدام مسافتين بعد نقطه التوقف’’ فهى ليست خطأ كامل مكتمل او متنازع عليه ولكن فى أغلب الاحيان هى خطأ.
العديد من البشر لديهم الفكره ان قطعا كلا ما يختص باللغه يتم ظبطه بقواعد صارمه. وكنتيجه لذلك يشترط لتلك القواعد ان تترك خيار واحد وهوا ان . لو ان ترك مسافه واحده صحيح اذن فترك مسافتين يتشرط ان يكون خطأ كامل مكتمل ولا نزاع عليه.
تاريخ النزاع اللغوى بسيط بما فيه الكفايه : ممن يعملوا فى التجميع كانوا يستخدموا المسافه بعد علامه الوقف لمعظم الوقت من القرن. لكن الناس الذين تعلموا الكتابه على ألات الكاتبه الميكانيكيه ذات الخطوط الاحاديه المسافه تم تعليمهم ليستخدموا المسافتين, لان الخطوط الاحاديه المسافه ( فى جميع الحروف التى لها نفس العرض) تترك مسافه بيضاء على جانبى الحروف الرفيعه. لذلك المسافتين فى نهايه الجمل عنيت بوصل المعنى ( ليس بلا معنى ) بالمساحه فى الصفحه.
لكن هل يستطيع الكثير من الكتاب والمحررين المهره الذين اعتادوا على عادة المسافتين ان يعتبروها "خطأ متنازع عليه"؟ هل هذه حقا قاعده نحويه سيئه؟ بالتأكيد لا. النحو ليس له علاقه بالعوامل الجماليه مثل المسافه الواحده او الاثنين. النحو يتعامل مع كيفيه ترابط الكلمات معا لصنع جمل مفيده مقبوله كما يعنيها متحدثى اللغه الاصليين. النحو به قواعد بها جدال ( زمن الماضى ل "أنا أكون" هو "أنا كنت"). لكن هناك ايضا جدالات اخرى.
عندما نتحدث عن قاعدة المسافتين, لسنا بعيدين عن نطاق القواعد النحويه. نحن بالفعل فى نطاق القواعد النحويه بشكل عام. المفهوم ذات الصله هنا ليست القواعد النحويه ولكن الاسلوب. قاعدة المسافه الواحده ليست التى تميز بين الكتاب الجيدين من الاخرين السيئين بالكتابه. بل هى من أجل التناسق الجمالى البسيط. وفى هذا السياق فهى تنتمى الى خيارات الاسلوب.
بعض الناس يبدوا عليهم انهم يفكروا ان حب اللغه هو حفظ اطول قائمه ممكنه من القواعد النحويه وشعارات الاسلوب. وكثيرا ما يتم اقتران ذلك مع الغرور بالنفس. ولكن الفهم الحقيقى لمسلمات اللغه حيث تكون القواعد حقا صارمه , حيث تلك التى يكون هناك نزاع عليها وتلك التى تكون مجرد خيارات للاسلوب. وخيارت الاسلوب من خلال التعريف لا تكن خطأ.
