English to Spanish: Pathologisation of Transgenderism in late twentieth century American cinema: A Study on Psycho, Dressed to Kill and Silence of the Lambs (abstract) General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Cinema, Film, TV, Drama | |
Source text - English Pathologisation of Transgenderism in late twentieth century American cinema: A Study on Psycho, Dressed to Kill and Silence of the Lambs is an analysis on how transgenderism has been presented as mental pathology or product of a personality disorder in three well-known American films: Psycho (1960s), Dressed to Kill (1980) and Silence of the Lambs (1991). Through the contextualisation of these films in the field of transgender studies and the analysis of real-life medical case studies that considered transgenderism a pathology; this text aims to provide an appropriate theoretical background to examine how the trans characters in these films are depicted as monsters or freaks. The created figure of the trans-monster will be thus explored and compared to other monsters in Gothic fiction, establishing a parallelism between the new and the old monsters of society. At length this study will argue that more accurate representations of transgenderism are necessary in cinema. It is particularly stressed the idea that it is striking that these fictional depictions of transgenderism do not coincide with real-life cases, where transgender people are the victims are not the murderers. | Translation - Spanish Pathologisation of Transgenderism in late twentieth century American cinema: A Study on Psycho, Dressed to Kill and Silence of the Lambs es un análisis sobre cómo el transgénero se ha representado como una patología mental o el producto de un trastorno de personalidad en tres películas Norteamericanas muy conocidas: Psicosis (1960), Vestida para matar (1980) y El silencio de los corderos (1991). |
