In his pioneering work, Zipf observed that more frequent words tend to be shorter, and attributed this phenomenon to a general principle of least effort (Zipf, 1949). At the level of the dependency between length and frequency, this principle can be considered an informal precursor of a compression principle, i.e. assigning smaller lengths to more frequently used words, that has been studied with mathematical rigor in information theory (Cover & Thomas, 2006). Indeed, the law of brevity is a requirement for optimal coding. Consider that the mean code length of a vocabulary of n words is (Cover & Thomas, 2006)
where p¡ is probability of use of the z'th most probable word and d¡ is its length. It has been proven that the minimization of ECL needs that (Ferrer-i-Cancho et al., in press)

In the absence of ties in probabilities or lengths, Equation (2) simply means that word length must be a strictly monotonically decreasing function of word probability under optimal coding (Ferrer-i-Cancho et al., in press). From such ideal dependency one expects a perfect negative correlation between word frequency and word length in a text. Accordingly, we define a generalized law of brevity as a tendency of the size or length of a unit to decrease as its frequency increases (Ferrer-i-Cancho & Hernández-Fernández, 2013), which is justified from an information theory perspective, and has the advantage of being neutral with regard to the functional dependency between p¡ and d¡.

Source text - English Warnings
The following warnings apply to the use of this neurostimulation system. Poor surgical risks. Neurostimulation should not be used on patients who are poor surgical risks or patients with multiple illnesses or active general infections.
Diathermy therapy. Do not use short-wave diathermy, microwave diathermy, or therapeutic ultrasound diathermy (all now referred to as diathermy) on patients implanted with a neurostimulation system. Energy from diathermy can be transferred through the implanted system and cause tissue damage at the location of the implanted electrodes, resulting in severe injury or death. Diathermy is further prohibited because it may also damage the neurostimulation system components. This damage could result in loss of therapy, requiring additional surgery for system implantation and replacement. Injury or damage can occur during diathermy treatment whether the neurostimulation system is turned on or off.
Electrosurgery devices. Electrosurgery devices should not be used in close proximity to an implanted neurostimulation system. Contact between an active electrode and an implanted IPG, lead, or extension can cause severe injury to the patient. If use of electrocautery is necessary, first turn off the neurostimulation system.
Cardioverter defibrillators. Neurostimulation systems may adversely affect the programming of implanted cardioverter defibrillators.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Patients with implanted neurostimulation systems should not be subjected to MRI. The electromagnetic field generated by an MRI may forcefully dislodge implanted components, damage the device electronics, and induce voltage through the lead that could jolt or shock the patient.

Resonancia magnética (IRM). Aquellos pacientes con sistemas de neuroestimulación implantados no deben ser sometidos a una IRM. El campo electromagnético generado por una IRM puede desplazar de forma violenta los componentes implantados, dañar los componentes electrónicos del dispositivo, e inducir cambios de voltaje a través del cable de conexión, que podría sacudir al paciente debido a una descarga eléctrica.

I have a MA in Specialized and Audiovisual Translation from the University of Roehampton, London. I was awarded the Gerhard Weiler Prize for my thesis about respeaking. Receiving this award was a great surprise, but I am glad some Spanish TV channels used it as a basis for improving the quality of live subtitles for deaf and hard of hearing people in Spain.
