VALORES REFERENCIALES:
SUJETOS NO DIABETICOS - 4-6%
Comment:
Glycated Hemoglobin (HbA1C); Measurement Method: HPLC, which is NGSP’s (National Glycohemoglobin Standardization Program) Baseline Technique.
HbA1C for a Diabetes Diagnosis:
Among Non-Diabetic Individuals, the values are usually in the 4 - 6% margin.
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) suggests that a value > 6.5% is a diagnostic criteria for Diabetes Mellitus. Except when there are symptoms, the Diabetes diagnosis requires that the test be verified by a second confirmation.
It considers values between 5.7 - 6,4 % to be an Increased Diabetes risk, and values between 6.0 - 6.4 % to be High Risk.
HbA1C to Monitor Diabetic Patients:
Furthermore, I recommend keeping the HbA1C values below 7% in diagnosed patients; a higher result will indicate that there must be a more strict surveillance on the patient’s glucose levels. Otherwise, further and more severe complications such as renal failure, blindness or nerve damage could arise.
There can be some interference with the HbA1C measurements in cases where the patients show certain types of anemia or hemoglobinopathies, some of which might have a geographic or ethnic distribution. In patients with iron deficiency, hemolysis or blood loss, the Glucose criterion must be used exclusively for the diagnosis.
Using this methodology, the Clinical Laboratory provides the attending physician with a reliable tool to administer therapy and monitor their diabetic patients.
