My name is Ulrika Peroni. I grew up in Sweden, although in 1983, as a 13 year old I moved with my adventurous parents to Moscow. During our three years in Moscow where my parents were teachers at the Swedish School, I had the opportunity to attend the Anglo American School Moscow as well as Die Deutsche Schule Moscau, the German school. I basically received two languages by default. I was also introduced to French and naturally Russian. Since that day languages have fascinated me.
Back in Sweden as a 16 year old, I finished high school and then graduated with BS in Business from the University of Umeå. At the age of 23, my sense of adventure was stronger than my desire for a "real job". I wanted to see the world. I applied for a job as a professional water skier and ended up working for an American company in Germany for 4 years. I also worked in Australia for a season, before I ended up in the US in 1997 with a full time position as supervisor and performer with the SeaWorld Ski show in Orlando. I have lived in Florida since 1998.
I am now married with three children and a fun active life. I maintain my Swedish by speaking to my children and watching Swedish movies and reading books. I can easily switch between Swedish and English and people always comment on the fact that my Swedish still sounds like I just left the country.
In 2006 I had the opportunity to translate a wonderful book about my grandfather, an amazing Swedish artist. I loved doing that and have been dreaming of pursuing a career as a translator since then. My children have now reached the age where this is possible, so I'm excited about where this new adventure will take me. |
