Portuguese to English: TEXTO CURATORIAL PARA O CAIS DO SERTÃO/CURATORIAL TEXT FOR THE BACKLANDS PIER General field: Art/Literary
Translation - English Luiz Gongaza is a brilliant and multiple inventor. Nothing escapes his acute sensitivity and free intelligence. The environment of the backlands and its sounds, the land and the people, their labour and home, birth and death, love and violence, party and pain, drought and hunger, language and religiousness, sweetness and malice: everything is sung with ingenuity and beauty, in his wide and always modern repertoire.
Along with his many partners, with clothes and accessories never seen before, a different kind of baião and a very particular scene play, Gonzaga created a musical genre, recreating himself several times and, with boldness and freedom, he showed a new Brazil to the Brazilians. In a time when only the coast was considered worthy, Gonzaga’s songs joined the amazonian wilderness, the carioca metropolis, São Paulo and the South to the Northeastern backlands. Travelling on roads through the whole country, playing in radio stations or radiograms, alive in the memory of millions of Northeastern migrants, Gonzaga supported the creation of a new symbolic map of Brazil. And he gained the world.
These life stories and these songs drive the visitor through ways and paths following one another in the Pier of Luiz Gonzaga’s Backlands. Through the most varied and modern exhibition and technological resources, the museum shows the backlands of Gonzaga and of millions of Brazilians. And it won’t settle for less. With grace and rigor, it aims to celebrate the rich lifeblood that comes from the dry land of the caatinga and its people, with their sorrows and loves.
