Bio

About me

Experience
I was born in Germany and grew up bilingual. I worked for various companies in Europe as well as Southeast Asia and was never satisfied with the approach of interpersonal communication nor the numerous development limitations of working in corporate. I used this experience to understand my needs better but also to see where I can excel. My hunger for healthy social interactions as well as my drive for perfection led me to become a consultant and freelancer who collaborates on all ventures with my spouse.

Education
I earned my Bachelor’s degree (hons) at the National University of Ireland, Galway with a specialisation in linguistics and psychology. I attended Maastricht University, where I have specialised in neuropsychology with a focus on clinical diagnosis, anamnesis, and psychopharmacology. My tertiary education, paired with my work experience, as well as my bilingual ability provides me with a technical understanding of my work; this combined skillset, matched with my passion for languages but also the aptitude for finding patterns and mistakes allows me to work with a broad range of topics.

Approach
My capability to deal with people, that my spouse lacks, make me the face of our venture. I have the required patience and skill to make our customers feel loved and can, at the same time, set comprehensible boundaries for those who are socially inept; this prevents losses but also creates a healthy work environment for all parties. I am organised and systematic; I do this to save my time as well as the clients. I am flexible, adjust to new situations quickly, and welcome a challenge. I exercise a direct and polite communication style as well as a strict, no-nonsense policy. I have developed a level of empathy that allows me to understand each parties standpoint, even if I do not agree. I am emotionally stable and require my environment to be the same. I intend to form long-term work relationships that serve everyone involved equally.

About us

We are spouses who studied linguistics and neuropsychology. Each of us has identified their specific skillsets, but we also learned that pooling our resources leads to improved results; we applied the same methodology to our postgraduate studies and continued this trend in our ventures as consultants and freelancers. Our most significant advantage is working as a team, as well as the ability to think critically and make decisions based on our analysis.

Both of us are notorious problem solvers that focus on fixing issues; for this, we develop workflows that allow us to create results which satisfy even our picky minds. Our approach and processes are under continuous evaluation. We do not shy away from telling each other if our work is not meeting our standards and needs refinement. It is our passion for concise and error-free text, as well as the ability to take ownership of our work, that drive us to perfection.

We have specialised in proofing the source for grammatical and factual errors; this in-depth understanding of the text allows us to create concise translations by using language that is easy to understand and free of errors. Our approach to work as linguists is evidence-based. We know that language is elaborate, ever-evolving, and depends on context; this allows us to craft complex content that is easy to approach while maintaining a natural flow.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes you different?
We are bold! We have a thorough understanding of guidelines and conventions and no issue challenging them if this leads to better results. We also nurture an emotionally healthy work environment based on sound client interactions, mutual respect, paired with an understanding of each party’s needs and abilities.

Are you an agency?
No. We are a family business comprised of a married couple dividing the work between us.

When did you start working together?
We started collaborating in 2011 during our undergraduate studies and decided that we wanted to work together full-time in 2015.

What are your academic qualifications?
We both hold a Bachelor’s degree (Hons) in Psychology and Linguistics from the National University of Ireland, Galway as well as a Master’s degree in Neuropsychology from Maastricht University.

Are you member of any professional association?
Yes, we are with the American Psychology Association (APA), the International Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters (IAPTI), as well as the Irish Translators’ and Interpreters’ Association (ITIA).

What services do you provide?
We edit, translate, and proofread. We also work as consultants who assist individuals or companies in analysing their communication and improving the consistency, legibility, as well as the flow of their projects.

What are your specialisations?
Market research, neuropsychology, psychopharmacology, communication, trauma and emotions (regulation, abuse, neglect). We are also fluent in finance, technical manuals, gaming, as well as all things computer and software related. Nevertheless, us being scientists, we can research and familiarise ourselves with most other topics as needed.

What are your language pairs?
We work from German to English as well as English to German.

What type of projects do you cover and what is your availability?
We mostly take on projects that we can complete within a week. We also work on larger projects that span over several weeks or months.

What is your turnaround time when inquiring for projects?
We reply to emails within one working day. We gladly to take your call in urgent situations.

How do you define quality?
We compare our work to contemporarily accepted standards, both within and without its context, to determine its quality; working with self-imposed rules to guide our work and having long-term exposure to the subject matter also helps to provide a valid statement on excellence.

How do you control for quality?
Our editing, translation, and proofreading process is the result of a tried and tested workflow, which is under continuous scrutiny. We utilise paid software tools that check for grammar and perform quality assurance to compensate for the limits of sustained attention, which, in turn, helps us to quantify improvement.

How much do you charge?
Our remuneration depends on the quality of the source text, the time we have to complete the project, as well as the payment terms.

Why are you so costly?
We charge what we consider our time to be worth. We understand that not everyone requires or can afford well-executed work. Fortunately, there are plenty of alternatives to meet every person's needs concerning budget and standards.

What CAT tool do you use?
We use Memsource for all our projects. Its integration of term bases and translation memories permits us to ensure consistency, improve quality objectively, and allows us to collaborate on projects in real-time.

What referencing system do you use?
We use APA for science and MLA for literature. Customers can also provide a style guide.

What do you value?
Our work. We take ownership and enjoy the tasks at hand, knowing that we can provide people with access to content they had not before. We also embrace clients who work with us on smooth communication, pay attention to small details, and are as passionate about language as we are.

Where are you located?
We travel Italy since early 2017 but consider Ireland our home.

Why are there no pictures of you?
We like our work to speak for us and not having it influenced by gender bias or other stereotypes.
