Since Catalonia announcing the independence referendum on 1st October, the Madrid government has suppressed it through a series of actions. In addition to seize up the control on public finance, the office of the Catalonia government was searched; multiple governors who supported and organized the referendum were arrested. In order to barricade the referendum, the Madrid government went as far as confiscating the votes. On the other hand, Catalonia persisted in the referendum. Where did the zest for independence come from? Certainly it is not formed in a day nor overnight; behind it in history stand the reasons.
Catalonia was a neutral region in Iberian Peninsula that lies between the nowadays Spain and Portugal – an independent region with its distinctive language, custom, political and judicial system such as the prototype of the congress system. The system was formed in the 11th century, aiming to equalize the power of the landlords. In 1283, in order to balance the power and interest among the royals, the military, the church and the nobility, the parliament was established. In 1359 it even transformed into a miniature of autonomy. How Catalonia came to officially become part of Spain was on account of losing the war fighting over the succession of Spanish throne in 1714. Philip V of Bourbon succeeded the throne and abolished the constitution and the autonomy Catalonia had had, he also forbad Catalonian as the official language. The destiny of Catalonia was ever since then retracked .

When a student opened fire in the cafeteria of Mattoon High School in Illinois on Wednesday, the outcome could have been a lot worse had it not been for a teacher who physically subdued the suspect shortly after he began shooting, the police said.
“Lives were saved by the quick response of a teacher here, and I think that’s what needs to be noted,” Jeff Branson, chief of the Mattoon Police Department, said in a news conference, hailing the efforts of the teacher, Angela McQueen. The suspect was taken into custody by the school’s resource officer.
One student was injured after being shot, Chief Branson said. The victim was in stable condition and in “good spirits” as of Wednesday, according to Larry Lilly, superintendent of Mattoon schools. The suspect remains in custody.
