This article deals with the short story “Hiato”, part of the collection Tutaméia: Terceiras estórias by João Guimarães Rosa. When Tutaméia was released, it caused some discomfort for being too inventive. We will analyze the story in relation to the book proposal and the literary field when it was released. The short story presents an allegory of deform or an indetermination procedure that creates deformations in the form. “Hiato” is related to the author’s concept of fiction as a representation that validates itself through the relations it establishes with cultural representations. These relations of representation with culture call attention to the significances that history aggregates to linguistic uses and, simultaneously, proposes meaninglessness of decisive representational moments. The effect is a critical reflection on the historicity of representations in culture which fiction makes undetermined as a future strategy.

Introduction
In life, João Guimarães Rosa achieved success among both the public and critics. He was especially successful with his only novel Grande sertão: veredas, translated into English as The devil to pay in the backlands. The author’s work has also been adapted several times into theater and cinema. During his lifetime, he saw his publications translated into French, Italian, German, English, and Spanish. Apart from the novel, four short-story anthologies were published during his life. The last one was Tutaméia: Terceiras estórias, in 1967. The author died a year later, three days after becoming a member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras (Brazilian Academy of Letters).
Although it was the last book to be published, Rosa had pondered over Tutaméia since 1937, while editing the manuscripts of Sagarana, which would be released only in 1946 (Sperber, 1982, p.103). Therefore, the project and even the writing of Tutaméia may have followed the author for several years. Some of the 44 texts of the books were individually published in journals before 1967. It is curious that the author had taken such a long time to publish Tutaméia, and the silence that followed reinforced the hypothesis that he knew it would be a provocative book. In a conversation with Paulo Rónai, Rosa referred to Tutaméia as a “true obstacle course” for the reader (Rosa, 1979, p.194).
In this article, we study the obstacle proposed in the short story “Hiato”, which proposes an allegory of form deformation or a “total deform” portrayed as a frightening bull that appears in the way of the cowboys. The noun “hiatus” (hiato) defines a cut, a discontinuity, and a gap. The use of the verb deform as a noun can be seen as a neologism composed by the noun form and the prefix de- which indicates denial, separation, and privation. The allegory has a double meaning: It refers to the literal appearance of the bull and means the complete deform that subtracts from the form. The cuts or hiatus in the form emanates its significant reach, and simultaneously, denies the natural substance of the form, affirming it as a rhetorical technique.
Hiato
I can appropriate myself of a certain signification by constructing it according to my intention thanks to the opacity of the sign that I connect to the object. When enunciating an allegory, I use the sign opacity to multiply its meaning; I use the image of something sensitive or of a fable to suggest an idea. As an allegory uses the sign’s bilateral unity, it serves to naturalize the platonic notion that the sensitive world is a mimesis of the idea. In the period we normally call “baroque”, there was a constant notion that sensitive forms represented in names make a mimesis of superior and ineffable meanings. Plato domesticated the mimesis by putting it under the philosopher’s domain and Aristoteles established the criteria of verisimilitude to justify only the poetry that corresponded to the internal logic considered necessary by the philosopher. Since then, mimesis creation has been under the philosopher’s judgement, which was able to differentiate true and acceptable models of simulacra and paralogisms.
Tutaméia proposes allegories that simultaneously refer to and distort rhetorics circumscribed to acceptable models as mimesis of a superior truth. Each anecdote repeats the suggestion of a superior meaning mimicked in the form that has, as an “internal logic”, the non-sense, the fame, or the deformation of mimesis models and realistic representation patterns. According to Hansen (2000, p.123), Rosa imitates, parodies, and ironizes style itself in Tutaméia. He uses allegories in the fiction of what is indescribable that enacts imaginary effects as if they corresponded to a significance of significations.
As an allegory, it proposes a fable that would correspond to a superior meaning. It is at the same time realistic and metaphysical. The state of things narrated is a mimesis of an idea, a logical model, and a thought system. In the preface of Tutaméia entitled “Aletria e hermêutica”, the author proposes the pattern of the stories in the book. It is composed by anecdotes that use poetic techniques to produce transcendence. The techniques used in these anecdotes are subtraction operations that deform or empty the form: knives without handles or blades; balloons without “skin”. Each short story aims at a transcendental effect and, simultaneously, supports the fictional character in the superior meaning it holds. The semantic deformation is owned to the fact that the superior meaning is fictional and illusional, instead of substantial, as in the platonic allegories.
The backlands and Literary field
Rosa’s literature almost always narrates situations in the backlands. The geographical backlands and their representation in a literate culture provide the social and linguistic material that the author uses to compose the allegories. As the backlands are a marginalized region, in a certain way unknown, their references are adequate to allegories. The referent is distant and mysterious. The author formulates allegories of a metaphysical backland, creating it in the gaps of historiography. He allegorizes the backland suggesting “superior” meaning fiction that, ironically, creates realistic effects as it deals with realities unknown by a literate culture.
The recurrent reference to the backlands motivated Rosa’s first critical reception to compare him to regional literature, classified as such because it referred to inland parts of the country, outside the big urban centers. Apart from the common interest in the country’s inland, there are fundamental differences between Rosa and regionalist authors. Since his first book, Sagarana, Candido (2000) pointed out the difference of Rosa, which can be received with interest by readers around the world, by the reach or ontological signification of his fictional work.
In an interview published in the magazine Arquipélago, Candido mentioned some traces of regionalism and their modifications through the decades. In the Brazilian context, regional literature started in the romantic 19th century. The first newspapers helped to fill the incipient urban-reader public with a fantasy and vainglorious literature about regions that are difficult to access. The country was going through a process that would lead to the independence from Portugal, in 1822. The Republic, started in 1889, nourished a certain middle-class expansion in the cities. In this context, regionalism acquired a satirical axis that typifies the speech and the culture of rural characters contrasting them with a literate narrator. From 1930, northeast regionalism abandoned this satirical tendency and moved closer to a colloquial register both in the characters’ speech as well as the narrator’s (Fischer, 2005).
Regional literature normally adopts a realistic convention, registering social issues of different cultures that live in this continental country. As the country’s colonization started by the coast, where urban centers started to develop, the so-called regional literature includes different authors and matters present in the more hegemonic systems. What we call backlands is also a generality. It covers vast extensions in the countryside, with different geographies and cultures. The many regions and cultures of the backlands have in common the fact that in a way they are excluded from official history and stigmatized in literate culture. We normally refer to the backland using interpretative schemes that encompass loitering, violence, work relations, and punctual historical events. These are used as keys to a nation’s critical reading so as to propose adapted solutions from imported models. According to Hansen (2000, p.192), Brazilian intellectual imagery on interpretative nets to “surround the backland of flowers or barbed wire”, Brasilian intellectuals usually praise country culture or report its incivility. Rosa used this exclusion of the geographical backlands from the official history and the illusional imagery that maintains the interest of a literate culture in the backland. Rosa invented a backland fiction in these empty spaces, using it as a source for allegories such as the one in “Hiato”.
The critics normally align the author with the modernist movement of São Paulo (1922 to 1929). The modernists valued aesthetic research, humor, and parody. In these aspects the alignment is justified. On the other hand, there are relevant differences. Modernists shared a project of aesthetic update of Brazilian literature. To do so, they sometimes used colloquialisms and celebrated the contribution of native thinking over a rationalism attributed to the colonizer, aiming for the appreciation of national interests.
In Rosa’s case, inventiveness is not regulated by these postulates. Rosa uses language in a much more inventive way making it the fiction of a speech that motivates the relation between signifier and significance. Rosa explores the significant potential of language in the fiction of a speech similar to the one spoken before Babel (Hansen, 2007). The critic to rationalism, that creates universal interest, is made through non-sensical procedures. It combines backland social matters to parodies in regional texts as well as world-wide ones, including philosophy, religion, botany, literature, mythology, esotericism, etc.
The Hiatus: A Pause for Reflection That Makes the Future Undetermined
Tutaméia is an inventive book. Each of its forty stories has two or three pages. There are four prefaces among the stories. These prefaces do not have the expected explanatory function, as they are enigmatic, anecdotal, and only the last is narrated in the first person. The book’s configuration is also peculiar and detailed. A very meaningful detail for the style interpretation is the reading index in the beginning and, later again, at the end of the book with some modifications. The index’s repetition already suggests that the reading is not over. Each index has as an epigraph—a quotation by Schopenhauer that promises some kind of enlightening if the reader is patient enough for a second reading and connects the parts to the “organic” whole. The author is ironic when subscribing to the metaphor of the organic work in the book’s epigraph that proposes allegories in fictions that communicate the device’s validity and deforms the substantiality of the rhetoric they refer to. The story “Hiato” allegorizes deformations in the form and concludes, reversing Platonism, which fiction enlightens the sensitive world defined by implied decision in the boldness of representation.
In the book’s index, the titles of the stories and forewords are listed in alphabetic order from A, “Aletria e hermenêutica” to Z, “Zingaresca”. The title’s alphabetical order is interrupted at the letter “G” that only reappears to form the order of the author’s initials JGR. The stories are “João Porém, o criador de perus”, “Grande Gedeão”, and “Reminisção”. In the hiatus of the alphabetical order and the stories in the JGR order, there is a story that thematizes the empty spaces, making decisive points undetermined in the representation. The title itself “Hiato” refers to a reflexive pause that follows the indetermination effect.
The first preface of Tutaméia, “Aletria e hermenêutica”, defines story as a way of being that denies history. This denial neither means the author’s lack of interest in the story nor a deliberation to fantasy, nor a baroque point of view on the illusory nature of history. The story puts history in question when combining determination and indetermination in the mimesis of available cultural representation, starting with linguistic uses. The author defines the story as a being that wants to be fiction, which does not want to be seen as a realist scheme of reading history that represented a determinate and exclusive point of view.
According to the Tutaméia’s foreword, the fictional instrumentalizes the poetic technique in order to reach the effects of poetic transcendence. The inventiveness of these subtraction techniques is proportional to the grandness or the representation patterns they deflate. The historical discursive practices constitute the motivated appearance of significance that, as they circulate, appears determined. When poetry subtracts or refuses the common uses of signs, it dislocates the significances and shows that they are decisions we take when connecting the signs. The most inventive technique, because it is mostly subtracting, is the “myth mechanism” (Rosa, 1979, p.5). The current space determinations are studied by hard sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, geography, etc.) and time determinations are studied by sciences that interpret historical processes (psychology, history, sociology, economy, anthropology, etc.). Mythical narratives reduce to a minimum or even suspend the determinations of time-space to consecrate a reality principle or an ontological sense. The mythical narratives largely use the indetermination to communicate an essential meaning to anyone interested in conceiving the denial of a limit, in transcending a determination.
Rosa’s literature uses indetermination to intervene with philological attention in the historical uses of language and the rhetoric implied in them. The story “Hiato” points out a criterion to the use of indetermination: It reports to a future meaning. It is a strategy of myth indetermination that sacralizes existing realities in a distant or past place, with nostalgic effects. If in the myths the indeterminations sacralize the meaning of a primordial reality, in the short-story the empty spaces open for each non-sense linguistic use require a pause for inconclusive reflection that gets even more complicated in a second reading. The lack of fencing in the bushes gathers the cowboys in the poetry, a free play, and makes an indetermination regulated only by the consciousness of the danger implied on deciding or acting.
The Biggest Bull or the Total Deform
Tutaméia opts for a non-sense that dismantles or subtracts the classical notion of plot. In the short stories of Tutaméia, each ending narrates an unusual overcome of the initial limit situation or its meaning. This overcoming is supported by non-sense operations incorporated in the linguistic uses of every story and mainly in the transcendental turn that ends the anecdote. The reader, accustomed to finding an internal logic to the plot, receives the ending as a challenge or a puzzle. In a second reading, he starts to establish connections of incompatible orders. Then, the indetermination effects dislocate the significance of the first reading that followed the anecdote “line” before the ending completely shudders it. In the story “Hiato”, a frightening bull figures the indetermination that creates deformations in the form. After the confrontation with the bull, the cowboys go up hill. In the distance that seems to paralyze the vague or indeterminate contours of a superior meaning, the remembrance of the recent danger highlights the limitations or determines the cowboys in relation to the bull:“escuro como o futuro, mau objeto para a memória” (dark as the future, bad object to memory) (Rosa, 1979, p.62).
The allegory narrates the cowboys’ journey and the climax is the bull’s sudden appearance that qualifies a total deform. The communicative function is assured by the grammar of the syntaxes and the clarity of this small anecdote: the journey, the meeting with the bull, and the climbing of the hill where the cowboys rest.
The fiction of the story’s unity parodies and deforms the enactment of one day in the tragic poetry that the Poetics follow as a model. In the backlands, the intrepid journey starts in the morning and ends in the solace of the night. The confrontation with the bull’s character, in both senses of the term, is decisive and mandatory, as the three cowboys see themselves between the bull and a narrow road on the edge of an abyss. They had to pass one at a time. The first is the young and hesitant Põe-põe encouraged by the old man Nhácio, in the rearguard, who claims that courage needs to be practiced. The dangerous situation shows the judgment or the implied decision in the representation. The cowboys go up hill and leave the river behind. The cowboys go up hill and leave the river behind. The river symbolizes the changes of beings. When the characters move away from the river, they start a pause for reflection on recent events. The anti-platonic inference of the narrator and the rest or pause ensued by the sunset ending. The narrator reflects on the reaction of Nhácio to the recent confrontation with the bull and takes it from a lesson that deforms the platonic hierarch of the shadows’ world that receives an illusional light, inside the sun of reason.
“De onde vem então o medo? Ou este terráqueo mundo é de trevas, o que resta do sol tentando iludir-nos do contrário” (So, where does fear come from? Or this terrestrial world is made of darkness, the remains of the sun attempting to deceive us otherwise) (Rosa, 1979, p. 63).
In a first reading, this lesson reiterates the respect to the oral culture of Nhácio that serves as a matter that the author appropriates in the creation of the allegory that we interpret later, in a second reading.
The Narrator, Põe-põe and Nhácio
The allegory uses some decisive neologisms to the meaning of representation as a deformation of the form (desforma), vocabulary presented in dictionaries, and backlands’ social matters related to the Native-Brazilian Põe-põe and the cafuzo Nhácio. The choosing of these topics, which deal with very determined assumptions, avoids the common places of violence, technological precariousness, and caricatured speech. The violence and lack of State is cushioned in the allegory that fills poetry with the very descriptive narrative of the journey. The violence and confrontation with nature’s dangers are themes treated lightly, almost at the end of the story. There is only a quick mention of the murder of the Native’s father, with no further explanations. The encounter with the bull almost sums up the anecdote and, even so, fills only a paragraph of the story. In Tutaméia, the situations of violence and danger span just a few lines in each story even though they are decisive in creating the limit situations reverted by the endings. The story mentions violence in lawless spaces and the main dangers in fenceless pasture, but the allegory differs greatly from the common places of regional literature.
Rosa is known for the inventive use of the language, even though there is predominance in his texts of widespread vocabulary and the “telegraphic syntaxes” which do not interfere in the communication value (Daniel, 1968). Urban readers are now a majority in Brazil. The lexicon may present some difficulties, even if they relate to regional and Brazilian aspects. In the short period of Rosa’s production, Brazil passed from a rural country to an urban one. The speediness of the modernization process has also created a cultural hiatus between parents and children. A type of literature such as Rosa’s, which deals with areas outside hegemonic urban centers, also invents a memory for this rural Brazil that has “deflated” in a period of few decades. Vocabulary difficulties do not prevent “Hiato” readers to understand the anecdote or the fable, already in a first reading. The strategic use of neologism and unknown vocabulary, regional or not, enriches a second reading of the allegory. In a first reading one can interpret it as a realistic story that values the oral knowledge of the Native-Brazilian and the cafuzo. A second reading can broaden the meaning of the fable and perceive it as an allegory through which the author proposes points of view over what is fictional.
The allegory has three characters. The first is the narrator that merely observes his participation in the journey only in a meaningful detail. When the bull appears, the narrator says that he and the other cowboys felt the fear of the horses from underneath their thighs, and this made the horses snore like a sleeping man. Sometimes in Tutaméia, not only in “Hiato”, the author compares men to cattle. The cowboys that drive the cattle are self-employed professionals as most writers. Considering the position of the story “Hiato” in the book’s title index, the story is part of a group that deals with authorship. The author serves as a parody channel, as an open ear that proposes pauses to reflect on the representations that circulate around the world. The other two cowboys are the cafuzo Nhácio and the indigenous Põe-põe.
At the end of the story, Nhácio complains of old age and says he cannot drive the cattle any longer. The young man Põe-põe, a relative, disagrees, showing his loyalty and recognition of the old man’s stature. The cafuzo and the native are from a multiracial lineage. In it, ethnicity transforms itself and both socio-cultural specificities to get other meanings. In the allegory, miscegenation is the meaning’s changing constitution. The name Nhácio seems to imitate the pronunciation of the name Inácio by part of Brazilian ancestors from Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau. Possibly, the strong Jesuit presence in the beginning of Brazilian colonization popularized the name of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. Until today, it is a very popular name in Brazil. Two interesting examples are:Ignácio da Catingueira, who was a slave and troubadour born at the end of the 19th century. Another is the naïf painter Ignácio da Nega, Rosa’s contemporary. The surname “Nega” serves as a loving reference to the painter’s black mother that named him after the black pope.
The first General of the Society of Jesus was Ignatius of Loyola, also known as the black pope because of his black garment which distinguished him from the pope’s white garment. He lived in the period known as the baroque and developed some meditation techniques that develop mental faculties through imagination and empathy. The Spiritual exercises guide the practitioner’s imagination to visualize events as those narrated in the Gospel, hell, the battle between good and bad, passion, Christ’s death and glory, etc. They use image techniques, tropes, and verbal games intending to activate the imagination and understanding of those who meditate. Loyola taught meditation as a way of ordering life as it removes from the soul disordered emotions to prepare it to receive the divine light (Loyola, 2000).
In the texts, fine arts, public ceremonies in the baroque period, motifs of grief and death, macabre scenes, subjects of illusion, fiction, and dream were frequent. The taste for allegories expressed a worldview that each death was the last meaning of an illusional history. The grieving atmosphere related to the nature they considered muted and blurred by sin. “The writing itself, which represents the speech that rewrites nature and history becomes vain, struck by the plenitude of divine absolute science, always beyond” (Hansen, 2006, p. 205). A mixed or transfiguring lineage connects Nhácio to Põe-põe. Each part of the Native’s double name takes an accent that sounds playful and refers to the verb “pôr”, which means put, narrate, dislocate, figure, and dispose. Doubled and with no playful accent, we are left with the name Poe, which seems to refer to Edgar Allan Poe, the master of short stories.
In a critical essay on Hawthorne, Poe (1973) made some concessions to allegories that coincide with his idea of fiction. Fiction should reveal a double reality for the reader. Through the apparent meaning of the narrative, there should be the suggestion of a hidden meaning that surprises the reader when the end of the text gives unity to the effect. Poe considers this effect unity as fiction’s most vital point and it is allegory that does it. On the other hand, Poe complains about traditional allegory as it sacrifices seriousness and verisimilitude. Poe’s aversion to traditional allegories is due to the fact that they relate to insubstantial concepts and ideals. The traditional allegory is a bridge or a metaphysical justification to a certain state of things. In contrast, Poe proposes that an allegory should be used in the destruction of fictions naturalized by common sense. An allegory can be an act that demystifies fictions shared by a culture as if they were substantial truths. It can be a fact if the author uses it as a tool to shatter another allegory, a fiction, or a common sense. When destroying the surface illusions, the allegory opens space to the reader’s volition, which happens when the reader relates their experience to the allegory’s suggestive effect. Poe believes that the allegory should be used to destroy forced identifications of signs and things. He saw the world as a space of illusions that veils sinister realities.
Conclusion
The story “Hiato” refers to the allegory concepts of Loyola and Poe. It dislocates the platonic notion that a substantial reality would contain the truth that the world hides. Departing from the dualist notion of reality, Rosa’s story withholds the evaluation that considers the sensible world lower than the metaphysical matter as well as deceiving regarding the functioning of the historic world. It affirms the form as a deformation of usual practice of rhetorical form and the allegory’s fictional character that, even so, is valid as a tool of indetermination of current representations. According to this idea, the space opened by the deformation of the form creates consciousness and makes room for a different future.

Este artigo trata do conto “Hiato” que faz parte de Tutaméia: primeiras estórias de João Guimarães Rosa. Tutaméia parece ter causado certo constrangimento na primeira recepção por ser um livro muito inventivo. Analisaremos o conto relacionando-o à proposta do livro e à situação do campo literário do período em que foi lançado. O conto apresenta uma alegoria da desforma ou do procedimento de indeterminação que efetua deformações na forma. “Hiato” diz respeito à concepção que o autor tem da ficção como uma representação que se valida nas relações que estabelece com as representações vigentes na cultura. Essas relações da representação com a cultura atentam para as significações que a história agrega aos usos linguísticos e, simultaneamente, propõem não-sensos em momentos decisivos da representação. O efeito é uma reflexão crítica sobre a historicidade das representações na cultura que a ficção indetermina como uma estratégia voltada para o futuro.

João Guimarães Rosa alcançou em vida sucesso de crítica e de público. Principalmente, teve grande êxito com seu único romance intitulado Grande sertão: veredas que foi traduzido para a língua inglesa como The devil to pay in the backlands. O autor também foi adaptado várias vezes para o teatro e o cinema, além de ter sido traduzido, ainda em vida, para o francês, italiano, alemão, inglês e espanhol. Ao romance, somam-se mais quatro livros de contos publicados em vida. O último deles foi Tutaméia: terceiras estórias, de 1967. O autor morreu no ano seguinte, três dias depois de tomar posse na Academia Brasileira de Letras.
Apesar de ter sido o último livro publicado, Rosa já cogitava sobre Tutaméia desde 1937, quando ainda editava os manuscritos de Sagarana que lançaria apenas em 1946 (SPERBER, 1982, p.103). Nesse caso, o projeto, e talvez a escrita, de Tutaméia pode ter acompanhado o autor durante vários anos. Nesse artigo, estudamos o obstáculo tematizado no conto “Hiato” que propõe uma alegoria da deformação da forma ou da “total desforma” figurando-a como um touro temível que aparece no caminho dos cavaleiros. O substantivo masculino “hiatus” (hiato) designa uma fenda, uma descontinuidade, uma lacuna. O neologismo desforma acopla o substantivo feminino “form” (forma) ao prefixo latino des- ou dis- que significa negação, separação e intensificação. A alegoria tem sentido duplo: refere a aparição literal do touro e significa a total desforma que opera subtrações na forma. As aberturas ou hiatos na forma irradiam o alcance significante dela e, simultaneamente, negam a natureza substancial da forma afirmando-a como técnica retórica.
Hiato
Posso apropriar-me de determinada significação constituindo-a segundo minha intenção graças à opacidade do signo que relaciono ao objeto. Quando enuncio uma alegoria, valho-me da opacidade do signo para duplicar o sentido; uso a imagem de uma coisa sensível ou de uma fábula para sugerir uma ideia. Como a alegoria vale-se da unidade bilateral do signo, serve para naturalizar a noção platônica de que o mundo sensível mimetiza a ideia. No período que costumamos chamar de “barroco”, era corrente a noção de que as formas sensíveis representadas nos nomes mimetizam sentidos superiores e inefáveis. Platão domesticou a mimese submetendo-a ao juízo do filósofo e Aristóteles estabeleceu o critério da verossimilhança para justificar apenas a poesia que correspondesse a uma lógica interna que o filósofo julgasse necessária. Desde então, a produtividade da mimese foi submetida ao juízo do filósofo capaz de diferenciar modelos verdadeiros, aceitáveis, de simulacros, paralogismos.
Tutaméia propõe alegorias que, simultaneamente, referem e distorcem retóricas circunscritas a modelos aceitos como mimese de verdade superior. Cada anedota repete a sugestão de um sentido superior mimetizado na forma que, no entanto, tem por “lógica interna” o não-senso, o jogo ou a deformação de modelos de mimese e de padrões de representação realista. De acordo com Hansen (2000, p.123), Rosa imita, parodia e ironiza, o próprio estilo em Tutaméia. Faz uso de alegoria na ficção de um inefável que encena efeitos de imaginário como se correspondessem a uma significação das significações.
Como a alegoria propõe uma fábula que corresponderia a um sentido superior, ela é ao mesmo tempo realista e metafísica; o estado de coisas narrado mimetiza uma ideia, um modelo lógico, um sistema de pensamento. No prefácio de Tutaméia intitulado “Aletria e hermenêutica”, o autor propõe que as estórias do livro têm por padrão anedotas que usam técnicas da poesia para produzir transcendência. As técnicas utilizadas nessas anedotas são operações subtrativas que deformam ou mesmo esvaziam a forma que referem: faca sem cabo e sem lâmina; balão sem pele. Cada pequena estória visa um efeito de transcendência e, simultaneamente, sustenta o caráter ficcional do sentido superior que encena. A deformação semântica deve-se ao fato de que o sentido superior é ficcional ou ilusório, em vez de substancial como na alegorização platônica.
The backlands e o campo literário
A literatura de Rosa quase sempre narra situações ocorridas no sertão. O sertão geográfico e as representações do sertão pela cultura letrada fornecem parte do material social e linguístico que o autor usa para compor as alegorias. Como o sertão é um território marginalizado e, em boa medida, desconhecido, a referência a ele é adequada à alegoria. O referente é distante e misterioso. O autor enuncia alegorias de um sertão metafísico inventando-o nas lacunas da historiografia. Alegoriza o sertão sugerindo ficções de sentidos “superiores” que, por ironia, logram efeitos realistas porque referem realidades desconhecidas pela cultura letrada.
A referência recorrente ao sertão motivou a primeira recepção crítica de Rosa a compara-lo à literatura regionalista que recebeu essa classificação exatamente porque referiam as regiões do interior do país, fora dos grandes centros urbanos. Apesar do interesse comum pelas regiões do interior do país, há diferenças fundamentais entre Rosa e o dito regionalismo. Desde o primeiro livro, que foi Sagarana, Antonio Candido (2000, p. 161-162) chamou a atenção para o diferencial apresentado por Rosa que pode ser recebido com interesse por leitores de todo o mundo, pelo alcance ou pela significação ontológica da ficção dele.
Em entrevista publicada pela revista Arquipélago, Antonio Candido mencionou alguns dos traços do regionalismo e de suas modificações através das décadas. De proveito mais especificamente brasileiro, a literatura regionalista começou no século XIX romântico. Começou abastecendo um público leitor urbano incipiente, que os primeiros jornais ajudaram a difundir, com uma literatura fantasiosa e ufanista sobre regiões de difícil acesso para esse leitor. O país passava por um processo que o levaria à Independência da colônia portuguesa, em 1822. Com o advento da República, desde 1889, alimentando certa expansão da classe média nas cidades, o regionalismo ganhou uma vertente satírica que tipificava a fala e a cultura de personagens rurais contrastando-as ao narrador culto. A partir de 1930, o regionalismo nordestino abriu mão dessa tendência satírica e aproximou do registro coloquial tanto a fala dos personagens como a do narrador (FISCHER, 2005, p. 33-34).
A literatura regionalista costumava adotar a convenção realista e com ela registrou matérias sociais de diversas culturas de povos que habitam um país continental. Como a colonização do país começou pelo litoral, onde os centros urbanos desenvolveram-se primeiro, a chamada literatura regionalista inclui autores diversos e referentes exteriores a esses sistemas hegemônicos. O que chamamos sertão também é uma generalidade. Recobre vastas extensões do interior do país, com diversas geografias e culturas. As diversas regiões e culturas do sertão têm em comum o fato de serem, em boa medida, excluídas da história oficial e estigmatizadas na cultura letrada. Costumamos fazer referência ao sertão segundo esquemas interpretativos que abrangem o problema do atraso, da violência, das relações de trabalho, de eventos históricos pontuais que usamos como chaves de leitura crítica da nação para propor soluções adaptadas de modelos importados. De acordo com Hansen (2000, p.192), o imaginário do intelectual brasileiro apoia-se em redes interpretativas para tentar “cercar o sertão de flores ou de arame farpado”. Guimarães Rosa aproveitou a exclusão do sertão geográfico da história oficial e o imaginário especioso que sustenta o interesse da cultura letrada sobre o sertão. Rosa inventou nesses espaços vazios a ficção do sertão usando-a como matéria em alegorias como a que aparece no conto “Hiato”.
A crítica também costuma alinhar o autor ao movimento modernista realizado, de 1922 a 1929, pelo grupo de São Paulo. Os modernistas valorizavam a pesquisa estética, o humor, a paródia, e nesse aspecto o alinhamento justifica-se. Por outro lado, as diferenças são relevantes. Os modernistas partilhavam um projeto de atualização estética da literatura brasileira. Para isso, por vezes fizeram uso de coloquialismos, celebraram a contribuição do pensamento selvagem em detrimento do racionalismo atribuído ao colonizador, e tinham em vista o privilégio da matéria nacional.
No caso de Guimarães Rosa, a inventividade não se regula por esses postulados. Rosa usa a língua de um modo muito inventivo que faz dela a ficção de uma fala que motiva a relação do significante com a significação. Rosa explora o potencial significante da língua na ficção de uma fala semelhante a que teria sido falada antes de Babel (HANSEN, 2007, p.59 e 61). A crítica ao racionalismo, que é de interesse universal, realiza-se com procedimentos de não-senso. Combina matéria social sertaneja a paródias tanto de textos regionalistas como de textos do mundo todo, que incluem filosofia, religião, botânica, literatura, mitos, esoterismo, etc.
O hiato: uma pausa para a reflexão que indetermina o futuro
Tutaméia é um livro propriamente inventivo. Cada um de seus quarenta contos tem duas ou três páginas. Tem quatro prefácios intercalados aos contos. Esses prefácios não cumprem a função explicativa esperada, pois são enigmáticos, anedóticos, e apenas o último é narrado em primeira pessoa. A configuração do livro também é bastante peculiar e detalhada. Um detalhe muito significativo para a interpretação do estilo é o índice de leitura que aparece no começo e, outra vez, no final do livro com algumas modificações. A repetição do índice já sugere que a leitura do livro não se conclui. Cada índice é epigrafado por uma citação de Schopenhauer que promete iluminação desde que o leitor tenha paciência para uma segunda leitura e relacione as partes ao todo orgânico. O autor é irônico ao chancelar a metáfora da obra orgânica na epígrafe de um livro que propõe alegorias de ficções que comunicam a validade do artifício e deformam a substancialidade das retóricas que referem. Como o conto “Hiato” que alegoriza deformações na forma e conclui, revertendo o platonismo, que a ficção ilumina o mundo sensível definido por decisões implicadas no exercício de coragem da representação.
No índice do livro, os títulos dos contos e dos prefácios são listados em ordem alfabética e vão de A, “Aletria e hermenêutica”, a Z, “Zingaresca”. A ordem alfabética dos títulos é interrompida na vez da letra “G” que apenas reaparece para formar a ordem das iniciais do nome do autor, JGR. Os contos são “João Porém, o criador de perus”, “Grande Gedeão” e “Reminisção”. No hiato da quebra da ordem alfabética e os contos da ordem JGR, há um conto que tematiza os espaços vazios que indeterminam pontos decisivos na representação. O próprio título do conto, “Hiato”, faz referência à pausa reflexiva que acompanha o efeito de indeterminação.
O primeiro prefácio de Tutaméia, “Aletria e hermenêutica”, define a estória como um modo de ser que nega a história. Essa negação não significa um desinteresse do autor pela história, nem uma deliberação à fantasia, nem um ponto de vista barroco sobre a natureza ilusória da história. A estória coloca a história em questão ao combinar determinação e indeterminação na mimese de representações disponíveis na cultura, a começar pelos usos linguísticos. O autor define a estória como ser que quer ser ficção, que não quer ser como um esquema realista de leitura da história que representasse um ponto de vista determinante e exclusivo.
O ser estória instrumentaliza técnicas da poesia para efetuar transcendência. A inventividade dessas técnicas subtrativas é proporcional às grandezas ou aos padrões de representação que esvaziam. As práticas discursivas, históricas, constituem a aparência motivada das significações que, à medida que circulam, parecem determinadas. Quando a poesia subtrai ou recusa os usos costumeiros dos signos, acaba deslocando as significações e evidencia que elas são decisões que tomamos ao relacionar os signos. A técnica mais inventiva, porque é a mais subtrativa, é o “mecanismo dos mitos” (ROSA, 1979, p.5). As determinações atuais do espaço são estudadas pelas ciências duras (física, química, biologia, geografia, etc) e as determinações do tempo são estudadas pelas ciências que interpretam processos históricos (psicologia, história, sociologia, economia, antropologia, etc). As narrativas míticas reduzem ao mínimo ou mesmo suspendem as determinações do espaço-tempo para consagrar um princípio de realidade ou um sentido ontológico. As narrativas míticas usam largamente a indeterminação para comunicar um sentido essencial a qualquer um interessado em conceber a negação de um limite, em transcender uma determinação.
A literatura de Rosa faz uso de indeterminação para intervir com atenção filológica nos usos históricos da língua e nas retóricas implicadas neles. O conto “Hiato” assinala um critério para o uso da indeterminação: que ela reporte a um sentido futuro. Trata-se de uma estratégia diversa das indeterminações dos mitos que sacralizam realidades vigentes em algum lugar distante ou no passado, com efeitos nostálgicos. Se nos mitos as indeterminações sacralizam o sentido de uma realidade primordial, no conto os lugares vazios abertos por cada uso linguístico de não-senso requerem uma pausa para uma reflexão inconcludente que se complica ainda mais, na segunda leitura. A ausência das cercas no mato brabo arrebanha os vaqueiros na graça da poesia, jogo livre, e efetua indeterminação regulada apenas pela consciência do perigo implicado em decidir ou representar.
O maior touro ou a total desforma
Tutaméia opta pelo não-senso que dismantle ou subtrai a noção clássica de enredo. Nos contos de Tutaméia, cada final narra uma superação inusitada da situação limite inicial ou do significado dela. Essa superação apoia-se nas operações de não-senso incorporadas aos usos linguísticos em todo o conto e, principalmente, na guinada transcendental que finaliza a anedota. O leitor, habituado a procurar pela lógica interna do enredo, acata o final como um desafio ou enigma e passa a estabelecer conexões de ordens incompatíveis, em uma segunda leitura. Na segunda leitura, os efeitos de indeterminação deslocam a significação da primeira leitura que contornava a linha da anedota antes que o final a estremecesse completamente. No conto “Hiato”, um touro temível figura a indeterminação que efetua deformações na forma. Logo após o confronto com o touro, os cavaleiros sobem a colina. Na distância que parece paralisar os contornos vagos ou indeterminados do sentido superior, a recordação do perigo recente evidencia as limitações ou determina os cavaleiros em relação ao touro: “escuro como o futuro, mau objeto para a memória” (ROSA, 1979, p.62).
A alegoria narra o trajeto dos cavaleiros e tem como clímax o aparecimento repentino do touro que qualifica como total desforma. A função comunicativa é assegurada pela gramaticalidade da sintaxe e pela clareza da anedota mínima: a travessia, o encontro com o touro e a subida da colina onde os cavaleiros descansam. A ficção da unidade do conto parodia e deforma a encenação de um dia da poesia trágica que a Poética toma por modelo. No sertão, a travessia intrépida começa pela manhã e termina no refrigério da noite. O confronto com o caráter do touro é decisivo e obrigatório, porque os três cavaleiros veem-se entre o touro e uma via estreita à beira do abismo. Tiveram de passar um por vez. O primeiro a passar foi o hesitante e jovem Põe-põe encorajado pelo velho Nhácio que se pôs na retaguarda afirmando que a coragem também deve ser praticada. A situação de perigo evidencia o julgamento ou a decisão implicada na representação. Os cavaleiros sobem a colina e deixam para trás o rio, o devir. A conclusão anti-platônica do narrador e o descanso ou a pausa sucedem o remate do pôr do sol. O narrador medita sobre a reação do vaqueiro Nhácio ao confronto recente com o touro e extrai dela uma lição que deforma a hierarquia platônica do mundo das sombras que recebe luz ilusória, em vez do sol da razão. “De onde vem então o medo? Ou este terráqueo mundo é de trevas, o que resta do sol tentando iludir-nos do contrário.” (ROSA, 1979, p. 63) Na primeira leitura, essa lição reitera o respeito pela cultura oral do negro Nhácio que serve como matéria da qual o autor apropria-se na elaboração da alegoria que interpretamos depois, numa segunda leitura.
O narrador, Põe-põe e Nhácio
A alegoria emprega alguns neologismos decisivos para o sentido da representação como desforma, vocabulário dicionarizado e matéria social sertaneja relativa ao índio Põe-põe e ao cafuzo Nhácio. A seleção dessas matérias, que mobilizam pressupostos bem determinados, evita os lugares comuns da violência, da precariedade técnica e da fala caipira caricata. O horizonte da violência e da ausência do Estado é amortecido na alegoria que preenche com poesia a narração bastante descritiva do trajeto. A violência e o confronto com perigos da natureza são temas tratados apenas de passagem, quase no final do conto. Há apenas uma rápida menção ao assassinato do pai do índio, sem maiores explicações. O encontro com o touro quase resume a anedota e mesmo assim ocupa apenas um parágrafo do conto. Em Tutaméia, as situações de violência e perigo ocupam poucas linhas de cada conto, embora sejam decisivas na constituição das situações limite que os finais revertem. O conto faz menção à violência dos espaços fora da lei e aos perigos primários dos pastos sem cerca, mas a alegoria difere muito dos lugares comuns da literatura regionalista.
Rosa é conhecido pelo uso inventivo da língua, ainda que nos textos dele predomine o vocabulário corrente e a “sintaxe telegráfica” não prejudique o valor da comunicação (DANIEL, 1968, p.31 e 127). O leitor urbano hoje é maioria, no Brasil. O léxico pode oferecer dificuldades, mesmo em se tratando de regionalismos e brasileirismos. No curto período de produção de Rosa, o Brasil passou de um país rural a urbano. A rapidez do processo de modernização também criou um hiato da cultura dos pais à dos filhos. Uma literatura como a de Rosa, que também refere regiões fora dos centros urbanos hegemônicos, também cumpre a função de inventar memória para o Brasil rural que se esvaziou em poucas décadas. As dificuldades de vocabulário não chegam a impedir que o leitor de “Hiato” compreenda a anedota ou a fábula, já na primeira leitura. O uso estratégico de neologismos e vocabulário desconhecido, regional ou não, enriquece a segunda leitura da alegoria. A primeira leitura pode interpretar o conto como uma estória realista que valoriza a sabedoria oral do índio e do mestiço. Uma segunda leitura pode ampliar a significação da fábula e encará-la como uma alegoria por meio da qual o autor propõe pontos de vista sobre o ficcional.
A alegoria tem três personagens. O primeiro é o narrador que parece ser apenas um observador e informa a participação dele na travessia apenas em um detalhe significativo. Quando o touro aparece, o narrador diz que ele e os outros cavaleiros sentiam sob as coxas o susto dos cavalos. E que o medo faz os cavalos roncarem como um homem que dorme. Algumas vezes em Tutaméia, não apenas no conto “Hiato”, o autor compara os homens e o gado. Os vaqueiros conduzem o gado e são profissionais autônomos, como boa parte dos escritores. Considerando a posição do conto “Hiato” no índice de títulos do livro, o conto faz parte do grupo de contos que dizem respeito a autoria. O autor porta-se como um canalizador de paródias e como um ouvido aberto que propõe pausas para a reflexão sobre representações que circulam, no mundo. Os outros dois vaqueiros são o cafuzo Nhácio e o índio Põe-põe.
No final do conto, Nhácio queixa-se da velhice e diz que não serve mais para conduzir o gado. O moço Põe-põe, que é um parente dele, discorda mostrando fidelidade e reconhecimento pela retaguarda recente. O cafuzo e o índio constituem uma linhagem miscigenada. Nela, a etnia transforma-se e ambas as especificidades socioculturais ganham outras significações. Na alegoria, a mestiçagem figura a constituição movente do sentido. O nome Nhácio parece imitar a pronúncia do nome Inácio por parte dos ancestrais brasileiros vindos do Cabo Verde e da Guiné-Bissau. Possivelmente, a presença marcante dos jesuítas desde o começo da colonização do Brasil popularizou o nome do Santo Inácio de Loyola. Ainda hoje, é um nome muito popular no Brasil. Podemos ficar com dois exemplos interessantes, de brasileiros. Um deles é Ignácio da Catingueira, que foi um escravo e trovador nascido no final do século XIX. Outro é o pintor naïf Ignácio da Nega, contemporâneo de Rosa. O sobrenome “Nega” funciona como uma referência carinhosa à mãe negra do pintor que deu a ele o nome do papa negro.
O primeiro Superior Geral da Companhia de Jesus foi Inácio de Loyola que também ficou conhecido como o papa negro por causa da batina negra que o diferenciava da batina branca do papa. Viveu no período que ficou conhecido como “barroco” e elaborou algumas técnicas de meditação que desenvolvem as faculdades mentais por meio da imaginação e da empatia. Os Exercícios espirituais dirigem a imaginação do praticante a visualizar acontecimentos como os narrados nos Evangelhos, o inferno, a batalha do bem e do mal, a paixão, a morte e a glória de Cristo, etc. Empregam técnicas da imagem, tropos e jogos verbais com a intenção de ativar a imaginação e a compreensão do meditador. Loyola ensinava a meditação como um meio de ordenar a vida porque retira da alma os afetos desordenados para capacitá-la a receber a luz divina (LOYOLA, 2000).
Nos textos, nas artes plásticas e nas cerimônias públicas do período “barroco” eram frequentes os motivos do luto e da morte, cenas macabras, as tópicas da ilusão, da ficção e do sonho. O gosto pela alegoria exprimia uma visão do mundo para a qual a morte era a significação última de uma história ilusória. A atmosfera de luto dizia respeito à natureza que consideravam emudecida e embaçada pelo pecado. “A própria escrita, que representa a fala que reescreve a natureza e a história, torna-se vã, golpeada pela plenitude da absoluta ciência divina sempre além.” (HANSEN, 2006, p.205) Uma linhagem miscigenada ou transfiguradora liga Nhácio a Põe-põe. Cada parte do nome desdobrado do índio leva um acento que soa lúdico e remete ao verbo “pôr” que significa colocar, narrar, deslocar, fazer figurar, dispor. Dobrado e sem o acento lúdico, resta o nome Poe que parece referir-se a Edgar Allan Poe, o mestre do conto.
Em um ensaio crítico sobre Hawthorne, Poe (1973, p. 125-141) fez algumas concessões à alegoria que coincide com a concepção de ficção por parte do contista. A ficção deve revelar uma realidade dupla para o leitor. Através do sentido aparente que a narração explicita, deve fluir a sugestão de um sentido oculto que surpreende o leitor quando o desfecho do texto dá unidade ao efeito. Poe considerava a unidade de efeito como o ponto mais vital da ficção, e a alegoria efetua essa unidade. Em contrapartida, Poe se queixa da alegoria tradicional por ela sacrificar a seriedade e a verossimilhança. A aversão de Poe às alegorias tradicionais devia-se ao fato delas dizerem respeito a concepções sem substância, idealidades. A alegoria tradicional constitui uma ponte ou uma justificativa metafísica para um determinado estado de coisas. Em contraposição a ela, Poe propõe que a alegoria seja usada na destruição das ficções naturalizadas pelo senso comum. A alegoria pode servir a um ato desmistificador de ficções partilhadas na cultura como se fossem verdades substanciais. Pode constituir um fato desde que o autor use-a como instrumento para derrubar outra alegoria, uma ficção ou um senso comum. Ao destruir as ilusões da superfície, a alegoria abre espaço para que as volições do leitor venham à tona, o que acontece quando o leitor relaciona a experiência dele ao efeito sugestivo da alegoria. Poe acreditava que a alegoria deve ser usada para destruir identificações forçosas de signos e coisas, e concebia o mundo como um espaço de ilusões que encobrem realidades sinistras.
O conto “Hiato” refere as concepções da alegoria de Loyola e Poe. Desloca nelas a noção platônica de que uma realidade substancial conteria a verdade que o mundo falseia. O conto de Rosa subtrai da noção dualista da realidade a hierarquia segundo a qual o mundo sensível estaria aquém da realidade metafísica e iludido quanto aos maquinismos do mundo histórico. Afirma a forma como técnica retórica da desforma e o caráter ficcional da alegoria que, mesmo assim, tem validade como instrumento de indeterminação das representações vigentes. Segundo essa concepção, o espaço aberto pela desforma gera consciência e prepara lugar para um futuro diverso.

Hiato: An allegory
This article deals with the short story “Hiato”, part of the collection Tutaméia: Terceiras estórias by João Guimarães Rosa. When Tutaméia was released, it caused some discomfort for being too inventive. We will analyze the story in relation to the book proposal and the literary field when it was released. The short story presents an allegory of deform or an indetermination procedure that creates deformations in the form. “Hiato” is related to the author’s concept of fiction as a representation that validates itself through the relations it establishes with cultural representations. These relations of representation with culture call attention to the significances that history aggregates to linguistic uses and, simultaneously, proposes meaninglessness of decisive representational moments. The effect is a critical reflection on the historicity of representations in culture which fiction makes undetermined as a future strategy.

Introduction
In life, João Guimarães Rosa achieved success among both the public and critics. He was especially successful with his only novel Grande sertão: veredas, translated into English as The devil to pay in the backlands. The author’s work has also been adapted several times into theater and cinema. During his lifetime, he saw his publications translated into French, Italian, German, English, and Spanish. Apart from the novel, four short-story anthologies were published during his life. The last one was Tutaméia: Terceiras estórias, in 1967. The author died a year later, three days after becoming a member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras (Brazilian Academy of Letters).
Although it was the last book to be published, Rosa had pondered over Tutaméia since 1937, while editing the manuscripts of Sagarana, which would be released only in 1946 (Sperber, 1982, p.103). Therefore, the project and even the writing of Tutaméia may have followed the author for several years. Some of the 44 texts of the books were individually published in journals before 1967. It is curious that the author had taken such a long time to publish Tutaméia, and the silence that followed reinforced the hypothesis that he knew it would be a provocative book. In a conversation with Paulo Rónai, Rosa referred to Tutaméia as a “true obstacle course” for the reader (Rosa, 1979, p.194).
In this article, we study the obstacle proposed in the short story “Hiato”, which proposes an allegory of form deformation or a “total deform” portrayed as a frightening bull that appears in the way of the cowboys. The noun “hiatus” (hiato) defines a cut, a discontinuity, and a gap. The use of the verb deform as a noun can be seen as a neologism composed by the noun form and the prefix de- which indicates denial, separation, and privation. The allegory has a double meaning: It refers to the literal appearance of the bull and means the complete deform that subtracts from the form. The cuts or hiatus in the form emanates its significant reach, and simultaneously, denies the natural substance of the form, affirming it as a rhetorical technique.
Hiato
I can appropriate myself of a certain signification by constructing it according to my intention thanks to the opacity of the sign that I connect to the object. When enunciating an allegory, I use the sign opacity to multiply its meaning; I use the image of something sensitive or of a fable to suggest an idea. As an allegory uses the sign’s bilateral unity, it serves to naturalize the platonic notion that the sensitive world is a mimesis of the idea. In the period we normally call “baroque”, there was a constant notion that sensitive forms represented in names make a mimesis of superior and ineffable meanings. Plato domesticated the mimesis by putting it under the philosopher’s domain and Aristoteles established the criteria of verisimilitude to justify only the poetry that corresponded to the internal logic considered necessary by the philosopher. Since then, mimesis creation has been under the philosopher’s judgement, which was able to differentiate true and acceptable models of simulacra and paralogisms.
Tutaméia proposes allegories that simultaneously refer to and distort rhetorics circumscribed to acceptable models as mimesis of a superior truth. Each anecdote repeats the suggestion of a superior meaning mimicked in the form that has, as an “internal logic”, the non-sense, the fame, or the deformation of mimesis models and realistic representation patterns. According to Hansen (2000, p.123), Rosa imitates, parodies, and ironizes style itself in Tutaméia. He uses allegories in the fiction of what is indescribable that enacts imaginary effects as if they corresponded to a significance of significations.
As an allegory, it proposes a fable that would correspond to a superior meaning. It is at the same time realistic and metaphysical. The state of things narrated is a mimesis of an idea, a logical model, and a thought system. In the preface of Tutaméia entitled “Aletria e hermêutica”, the author proposes the pattern of the stories in the book. It is composed by anecdotes that use poetic techniques to produce transcendence. The techniques used in these anecdotes are subtraction operations that deform or empty the form: knives without handles or blades; balloons without “skin”. Each short story aims at a transcendental effect and, simultaneously, supports the fictional character in the superior meaning it holds. The semantic deformation is owned to the fact that the superior meaning is fictional and illusional, instead of substantial, as in the platonic allegories.
The backlands and Literary field
Rosa’s literature almost always narrates situations in the backlands. The geographical backlands and their representation in a literate culture provide the social and linguistic material that the author uses to compose the allegories. As the backlands are a marginalized region, in a certain way unknown, their references are adequate to allegories. The referent is distant and mysterious. The author formulates allegories of a metaphysical backland, creating it in the gaps of historiography. He allegorizes the backland suggesting “superior” meaning fiction that, ironically, creates realistic effects as it deals with realities unknown by a literate culture.
The recurrent reference to the backlands motivated Rosa’s first critical reception to compare him to regional literature, classified as such because it referred to inland parts of the country, outside the big urban centers. Apart from the common interest in the country’s inland, there are fundamental differences between Rosa and regionalist authors. Since his first book, Sagarana, Candido (2000) pointed out the difference of Rosa, which can be received with interest by readers around the world, by the reach or ontological signification of his fictional work.
In an interview published in the magazine Arquipélago, Candido mentioned some traces of regionalism and their modifications through the decades. In the Brazilian context, regional literature started in the romantic 19th century. The first newspapers helped to fill the incipient urban-reader public with a fantasy and vainglorious literature about regions that are difficult to access. The country was going through a process that would lead to the independence from Portugal, in 1822. The Republic, started in 1889, nourished a certain middle-class expansion in the cities. In this context, regionalism acquired a satirical axis that typifies the speech and the culture of rural characters contrasting them with a literate narrator. From 1930, northeast regionalism abandoned this satirical tendency and moved closer to a colloquial register both in the characters’ speech as well as the narrator’s (Fischer, 2005).
Regional literature normally adopts a realistic convention, registering social issues of different cultures that live in this continental country. As the country’s colonization started by the coast, where urban centers started to develop, the so-called regional literature includes different authors and matters present in the more hegemonic systems. What we call backlands is also a generality. It covers vast extensions in the countryside, with different geographies and cultures. The many regions and cultures of the backlands have in common the fact that in a way they are excluded from official history and stigmatized in literate culture. We normally refer to the backland using interpretative schemes that encompass loitering, violence, work relations, and punctual historical events. These are used as keys to a nation’s critical reading so as to propose adapted solutions from imported models. According to Hansen (2000, p.192), Brazilian intellectual imagery on interpretative nets to “surround the backland of flowers or barbed wire”, Brasilian intellectuals usually praise country culture or report its incivility. Rosa used this exclusion of the geographical backlands from the official history and the illusional imagery that maintains the interest of a literate culture in the backland. Rosa invented a backland fiction in these empty spaces, using it as a source for allegories such as the one in “Hiato”.
The critics normally align the author with the modernist movement of São Paulo (1922 to 1929). The modernists valued aesthetic research, humor, and parody. In these aspects the alignment is justified. On the other hand, there are relevant differences. Modernists shared a project of aesthetic update of Brazilian literature. To do so, they sometimes used colloquialisms and celebrated the contribution of native thinking over a rationalism attributed to the colonizer, aiming for the appreciation of national interests.
In Rosa’s case, inventiveness is not regulated by these postulates. Rosa uses language in a much more inventive way making it the fiction of a speech that motivates the relation between signifier and significance. Rosa explores the significant potential of language in the fiction of a speech similar to the one spoken before Babel (Hansen, 2007). The critic to rationalism, that creates universal interest, is made through non-sensical procedures. It combines backland social matters to parodies in regional texts as well as world-wide ones, including philosophy, religion, botany, literature, mythology, esotericism, etc.
The Hiatus: A Pause for Reflection That Makes the Future Undetermined
Tutaméia is an inventive book. Each of its forty stories has two or three pages. There are four prefaces among the stories. These prefaces do not have the expected explanatory function, as they are enigmatic, anecdotal, and only the last is narrated in the first person. The book’s configuration is also peculiar and detailed. A very meaningful detail for the style interpretation is the reading index in the beginning and, later again, at the end of the book with some modifications. The index’s repetition already suggests that the reading is not over. Each index has as an epigraph—a quotation by Schopenhauer that promises some kind of enlightening if the reader is patient enough for a second reading and connects the parts to the “organic” whole. The author is ironic when subscribing to the metaphor of the organic work in the book’s epigraph that proposes allegories in fictions that communicate the device’s validity and deforms the substantiality of the rhetoric they refer to. The story “Hiato” allegorizes deformations in the form and concludes, reversing Platonism, which fiction enlightens the sensitive world defined by implied decision in the boldness of representation.
In the book’s index, the titles of the stories and forewords are listed in alphabetic order from A, “Aletria e hermenêutica” to Z, “Zingaresca”. The title’s alphabetical order is interrupted at the letter “G” that only reappears to form the order of the author’s initials JGR. The stories are “João Porém, o criador de perus”, “Grande Gedeão”, and “Reminisção”. In the hiatus of the alphabetical order and the stories in the JGR order, there is a story that thematizes the empty spaces, making decisive points undetermined in the representation. The title itself “Hiato” refers to a reflexive pause that follows the indetermination effect.
The first preface of Tutaméia, “Aletria e hermenêutica”, defines story as a way of being that denies history. This denial neither means the author’s lack of interest in the story nor a deliberation to fantasy, nor a baroque point of view on the illusory nature of history. The story puts history in question when combining determination and indetermination in the mimesis of available cultural representation, starting with linguistic uses. The author defines the story as a being that wants to be fiction, which does not want to be seen as a realist scheme of reading history that represented a determinate and exclusive point of view.
According to the Tutaméia’s foreword, the fictional instrumentalizes the poetic technique in order to reach the effects of poetic transcendence. The inventiveness of these subtraction techniques is proportional to the grandness or the representation patterns they deflate. The historical discursive practices constitute the motivated appearance of significance that, as they circulate, appears determined. When poetry subtracts or refuses the common uses of signs, it dislocates the significances and shows that they are decisions we take when connecting the signs. The most inventive technique, because it is mostly subtracting, is the “myth mechanism” (Rosa, 1979, p.5). The current space determinations are studied by hard sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, geography, etc.) and time determinations are studied by sciences that interpret historical processes (psychology, history, sociology, economy, anthropology, etc.). Mythical narratives reduce to a minimum or even suspend the determinations of time-space to consecrate a reality principle or an ontological sense. The mythical narratives largely use the indetermination to communicate an essential meaning to anyone interested in conceiving the denial of a limit, in transcending a determination.
Rosa’s literature uses indetermination to intervene with philological attention in the historical uses of language and the rhetoric implied in them. The story “Hiato” points out a criterion to the use of indetermination: It reports to a future meaning. It is a strategy of myth indetermination that sacralizes existing realities in a distant or past place, with nostalgic effects. If in the myths the indeterminations sacralize the meaning of a primordial reality, in the short-story the empty spaces open for each non-sense linguistic use require a pause for inconclusive reflection that gets even more complicated in a second reading. The lack of fencing in the bushes gathers the cowboys in the poetry, a free play, and makes an indetermination regulated only by the consciousness of the danger implied on deciding or acting.
The Biggest Bull or the Total Deform
Tutaméia opts for a non-sense that dismantles or subtracts the classical notion of plot. In the short stories of Tutaméia, each ending narrates an unusual overcome of the initial limit situation or its meaning. This overcoming is supported by non-sense operations incorporated in the linguistic uses of every story and mainly in the transcendental turn that ends the anecdote. The reader, accustomed to finding an internal logic to the plot, receives the ending as a challenge or a puzzle. In a second reading, he starts to establish connections of incompatible orders. Then, the indetermination effects dislocate the significance of the first reading that followed the anecdote “line” before the ending completely shudders it. In the story “Hiato”, a frightening bull figures the indetermination that creates deformations in the form. After the confrontation with the bull, the cowboys go up hill. In the distance that seems to paralyze the vague or indeterminate contours of a superior meaning, the remembrance of the recent danger highlights the limitations or determines the cowboys in relation to the bull:“escuro como o futuro, mau objeto para a memória” (dark as the future, bad object to memory) (Rosa, 1979, p.62).
The allegory narrates the cowboys’ journey and the climax is the bull’s sudden appearance that qualifies a total deform. The communicative function is assured by the grammar of the syntaxes and the clarity of this small anecdote: the journey, the meeting with the bull, and the climbing of the hill where the cowboys rest.
The fiction of the story’s unity parodies and deforms the enactment of one day in the tragic poetry that the Poetics follow as a model. In the backlands, the intrepid journey starts in the morning and ends in the solace of the night. The confrontation with the bull’s character, in both senses of the term, is decisive and mandatory, as the three cowboys see themselves between the bull and a narrow road on the edge of an abyss. They had to pass one at a time. The first is the young and hesitant Põe-põe encouraged by the old man Nhácio, in the rearguard, who claims that courage needs to be practiced. The dangerous situation shows the judgment or the implied decision in the representation. The cowboys go up hill and leave the river behind. The cowboys go up hill and leave the river behind. The river symbolizes the changes of beings. When the characters move away from the river, they start a pause for reflection on recent events. The anti-platonic inference of the narrator and the rest or pause ensued by the sunset ending. The narrator reflects on the reaction of Nhácio to the recent confrontation with the bull and takes it from a lesson that deforms the platonic hierarch of the shadows’ world that receives an illusional light, inside the sun of reason.
“De onde vem então o medo? Ou este terráqueo mundo é de trevas, o que resta do sol tentando iludir-nos do contrário” (So, where does fear come from? Or this terrestrial world is made of darkness, the remains of the sun attempting to deceive us otherwise) (Rosa, 1979, p. 63).
In a first reading, this lesson reiterates the respect to the oral culture of Nhácio that serves as a matter that the author appropriates in the creation of the allegory that we interpret later, in a second reading.
The Narrator, Põe-põe and Nhácio
The allegory uses some decisive neologisms to the meaning of representation as a deformation of the form (desforma), vocabulary presented in dictionaries, and backlands’ social matters related to the Native-Brazilian Põe-põe and the cafuzo Nhácio. The choosing of these topics, which deal with very determined assumptions, avoids the common places of violence, technological precariousness, and caricatured speech. The violence and lack of State is cushioned in the allegory that fills poetry with the very descriptive narrative of the journey. The violence and confrontation with nature’s dangers are themes treated lightly, almost at the end of the story. There is only a quick mention of the murder of the Native’s father, with no further explanations. The encounter with the bull almost sums up the anecdote and, even so, fills only a paragraph of the story. In Tutaméia, the situations of violence and danger span just a few lines in each story even though they are decisive in creating the limit situations reverted by the endings. The story mentions violence in lawless spaces and the main dangers in fenceless pasture, but the allegory differs greatly from the common places of regional literature.
Rosa is known for the inventive use of the language, even though there is predominance in his texts of widespread vocabulary and the “telegraphic syntaxes” which do not interfere in the communication value (Daniel, 1968). Urban readers are now a majority in Brazil. The lexicon may present some difficulties, even if they relate to regional and Brazilian aspects. In the short period of Rosa’s production, Brazil passed from a rural country to an urban one. The speediness of the modernization process has also created a cultural hiatus between parents and children. A type of literature such as Rosa’s, which deals with areas outside hegemonic urban centers, also invents a memory for this rural Brazil that has “deflated” in a period of few decades. Vocabulary difficulties do not prevent “Hiato” readers to understand the anecdote or the fable, already in a first reading. The strategic use of neologism and unknown vocabulary, regional or not, enriches a second reading of the allegory. In a first reading one can interpret it as a realistic story that values the oral knowledge of the Native-Brazilian and the cafuzo. A second reading can broaden the meaning of the fable and perceive it as an allegory through which the author proposes points of view over what is fictional.
The allegory has three characters. The first is the narrator that merely observes his participation in the journey only in a meaningful detail. When the bull appears, the narrator says that he and the other cowboys felt the fear of the horses from underneath their thighs, and this made the horses snore like a sleeping man. Sometimes in Tutaméia, not only in “Hiato”, the author compares men to cattle. The cowboys that drive the cattle are self-employed professionals as most writers. Considering the position of the story “Hiato” in the book’s title index, the story is part of a group that deals with authorship. The author serves as a parody channel, as an open ear that proposes pauses to reflect on the representations that circulate around the world. The other two cowboys are the cafuzo Nhácio and the indigenous Põe-põe.
At the end of the story, Nhácio complains of old age and says he cannot drive the cattle any longer. The young man Põe-põe, a relative, disagrees, showing his loyalty and recognition of the old man’s stature. The cafuzo and the native are from a multiracial lineage. In it, ethnicity transforms itself and both socio-cultural specificities to get other meanings. In the allegory, miscegenation is the meaning’s changing constitution. The name Nhácio seems to imitate the pronunciation of the name Inácio by part of Brazilian ancestors from Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau. Possibly, the strong Jesuit presence in the beginning of Brazilian colonization popularized the name of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. Until today, it is a very popular name in Brazil. Two interesting examples are:Ignácio da Catingueira, who was a slave and troubadour born at the end of the 19th century. Another is the naïf painter Ignácio da Nega, Rosa’s contemporary. The surname “Nega” serves as a loving reference to the painter’s black mother that named him after the black pope.
The first General of the Society of Jesus was Ignatius of Loyola, also known as the black pope because of his black garment which distinguished him from the pope’s white garment. He lived in the period known as the baroque and developed some meditation techniques that develop mental faculties through imagination and empathy. The Spiritual exercises guide the practitioner’s imagination to visualize events as those narrated in the Gospel, hell, the battle between good and bad, passion, Christ’s death and glory, etc. They use image techniques, tropes, and verbal games intending to activate the imagination and understanding of those who meditate. Loyola taught meditation as a way of ordering life as it removes from the soul disordered emotions to prepare it to receive the divine light (Loyola, 2000).
In the texts, fine arts, public ceremonies in the baroque period, motifs of grief and death, macabre scenes, subjects of illusion, fiction, and dream were frequent. The taste for allegories expressed a worldview that each death was the last meaning of an illusional history. The grieving atmosphere related to the nature they considered muted and blurred by sin. “The writing itself, which represents the speech that rewrites nature and history becomes vain, struck by the plenitude of divine absolute science, always beyond” (Hansen, 2006, p. 205). A mixed or transfiguring lineage connects Nhácio to Põe-põe. Each part of the Native’s double name takes an accent that sounds playful and refers to the verb “pôr”, which means put, narrate, dislocate, figure, and dispose. Doubled and with no playful accent, we are left with the name Poe, which seems to refer to Edgar Allan Poe, the master of short stories.
In a critical essay on Hawthorne, Poe (1973) made some concessions to allegories that coincide with his idea of fiction. Fiction should reveal a double reality for the reader. Through the apparent meaning of the narrative, there should be the suggestion of a hidden meaning that surprises the reader when the end of the text gives unity to the effect. Poe considers this effect unity as fiction’s most vital point and it is allegory that does it. On the other hand, Poe complains about traditional allegory as it sacrifices seriousness and verisimilitude. Poe’s aversion to traditional allegories is due to the fact that they relate to insubstantial concepts and ideals. The traditional allegory is a bridge or a metaphysical justification to a certain state of things. In contrast, Poe proposes that an allegory should be used in the destruction of fictions naturalized by common sense. An allegory can be an act that demystifies fictions shared by a culture as if they were substantial truths. It can be a fact if the author uses it as a tool to shatter another allegory, a fiction, or a common sense. When destroying the surface illusions, the allegory opens space to the reader’s volition, which happens when the reader relates their experience to the allegory’s suggestive effect. Poe believes that the allegory should be used to destroy forced identifications of signs and things. He saw the world as a space of illusions that veils sinister realities.
Conclusion
The story “Hiato” refers to the allegory concepts of Loyola and Poe. It dislocates the platonic notion that a substantial reality would contain the truth that the world hides. Departing from the dualist notion of reality, Rosa’s story withholds the evaluation that considers the sensible world lower than the metaphysical matter as well as deceiving regarding the functioning of the historic world. It affirms the form as a deformation of usual practice of rhetorical form and the allegory’s fictional character that, even so, is valid as a tool of indetermination of current representations. According to this idea, the space opened by the deformation of the form creates consciousness and makes room for a different future.

Hiato: uma alegoria
Este artigo trata do conto “Hiato” que faz parte de Tutaméia: primeiras estórias de João Guimarães Rosa. Tutaméia parece ter causado certo constrangimento na primeira recepção por ser um livro muito inventivo. Analisaremos o conto relacionando-o à proposta do livro e à situação do campo literário do período em que foi lançado. O conto apresenta uma alegoria da desforma ou do procedimento de indeterminação que efetua deformações na forma. “Hiato” diz respeito à concepção que o autor tem da ficção como uma representação que se valida nas relações que estabelece com as representações vigentes na cultura. Essas relações da representação com a cultura atentam para as significações que a história agrega aos usos linguísticos e, simultaneamente, propõem não-sensos em momentos decisivos da representação. O efeito é uma reflexão crítica sobre a historicidade das representações na cultura que a ficção indetermina como uma estratégia voltada para o futuro.
Introdução
João Guimarães Rosa alcançou em vida sucesso de crítica e de público. Principalmente, teve grande êxito com seu único romance intitulado Grande sertão: veredas que foi traduzido para a língua inglesa como The devil to pay in the backlands. O autor também foi adaptado várias vezes para o teatro e o cinema, além de ter sido traduzido, ainda em vida, para o francês, italiano, alemão, inglês e espanhol. Ao romance, somam-se mais quatro livros de contos publicados em vida. O último deles foi Tutaméia: terceiras estórias, de 1967. O autor morreu no ano seguinte, três dias depois de tomar posse na Academia Brasileira de Letras.
Apesar de ter sido o último livro publicado, Rosa já cogitava sobre Tutaméia desde 1937, quando ainda editava os manuscritos de Sagarana que lançaria apenas em 1946 (SPERBER, 1982, p.103). Nesse caso, o projeto, e talvez a escrita, de Tutaméia pode ter acompanhado o autor durante vários anos. Nesse artigo, estudamos o obstáculo tematizado no conto “Hiato” que propõe uma alegoria da deformação da forma ou da “total desforma” figurando-a como um touro temível que aparece no caminho dos cavaleiros. O substantivo masculino “hiatus” (hiato) designa uma fenda, uma descontinuidade, uma lacuna. O neologismo desforma acopla o substantivo feminino “form” (forma) ao prefixo latino des- ou dis- que significa negação, separação e intensificação. A alegoria tem sentido duplo: refere a aparição literal do touro e significa a total desforma que opera subtrações na forma. Hiato
Posso apropriar-me de determinada significação constituindo-a segundo minha intenção graças à opacidade do signo que relaciono ao objeto. Quando enuncio uma alegoria, valho-me da opacidade do signo para duplicar o sentido; uso a imagem de uma coisa sensível ou de uma fábula para sugerir uma ideia. Como a alegoria vale-se da unidade bilateral do signo, serve para naturalizar a noção platônica de que o mundo sensível mimetiza a ideia. No período que costumamos chamar de “barroco”, era corrente a noção de que as formas sensíveis representadas nos nomes mimetizam sentidos superiores e inefáveis. Platão domesticou a mimese submetendo-a ao juízo do filósofo e Aristóteles estabeleceu o critério da verossimilhança para justificar apenas a poesia que correspondesse a uma lógica interna que o filósofo julgasse necessária. Desde então, a produtividade da mimese foi submetida ao juízo do filósofo capaz de diferenciar modelos verdadeiros, aceitáveis, de simulacros, paralogismos.
Tutaméia propõe alegorias que, simultaneamente, referem e distorcem retóricas circunscritas a modelos aceitos como mimese de verdade superior. Cada anedota repete a sugestão de um sentido superior mimetizado na forma que, no entanto, tem por “lógica interna” o não-senso, o jogo ou a deformação de modelos de mimese e de padrões de representação realista. De acordo com Hansen (2000, p.123), Rosa imita, parodia e ironiza, o próprio estilo em Tutaméia. Faz uso de alegoria na ficção de um inefável que encena efeitos de imaginário como se correspondessem a uma significação das significações.
Como a alegoria propõe uma fábula que corresponderia a um sentido superior, ela é ao mesmo tempo realista e metafísica; o estado de coisas narrado mimetiza uma ideia, um modelo lógico, um sistema de pensamento. No prefácio de Tutaméia intitulado “Aletria e hermenêutica”, o autor propõe que as estórias do livro têm por padrão anedotas que usam técnicas da poesia para produzir transcendência. As técnicas utilizadas nessas anedotas são operações subtrativas que deformam ou mesmo esvaziam a forma que referem: faca sem cabo e sem lâmina; balão sem pele. Cada pequena estória visa um efeito de transcendência e, simultaneamente, sustenta o caráter ficcional do sentido superior que encena. A deformação semântica deve-se ao fato de que o sentido superior é ficcional ou ilusório, em vez de substancial como na alegorização platônica.
The backlands e o campo literário
A literatura de Rosa quase sempre narra situações ocorridas no sertão. O sertão geográfico e as representações do sertão pela cultura letrada fornecem parte do material social e linguístico que o autor usa para compor as alegorias. Como o sertão é um território marginalizado e, em boa medida, desconhecido, a referência a ele é adequada à alegoria. O referente é distante e misterioso. O autor enuncia alegorias de um sertão metafísico inventando-o nas lacunas da historiografia. Alegoriza o sertão sugerindo ficções de sentidos “superiores” que, por ironia, logram efeitos realistas porque referem realidades desconhecidas pela cultura letrada.
A referência recorrente ao sertão motivou a primeira recepção crítica de Rosa a compara-lo à literatura regionalista que recebeu essa classificação exatamente porque referiam as regiões do interior do país, fora dos grandes centros urbanos. Apesar do interesse comum pelas regiões do interior do país, há diferenças fundamentais entre Rosa e o dito regionalismo. Desde o primeiro livro, que foi Sagarana, Antonio Candido (2000, p. 161-162) chamou a atenção para o diferencial apresentado por Rosa que pode ser recebido com interesse por leitores de todo o mundo, pelo alcance ou pela significação ontológica da ficção dele.
Em entrevista publicada pela revista Arquipélago, Antonio Candido mencionou alguns dos traços do regionalismo e de suas modificações através das décadas. De proveito mais especificamente brasileiro, a literatura regionalista começou no século XIX romântico. Começou abastecendo um público leitor urbano incipiente, que os primeiros jornais ajudaram a difundir, com uma literatura fantasiosa e ufanista sobre regiões de difícil acesso para esse leitor. O país passava por um processo que o levaria à Independência da colônia portuguesa, em 1822. Com o advento da República, desde 1889, alimentando certa expansão da classe média nas cidades, o regionalismo ganhou uma vertente satírica que tipificava a fala e a cultura de personagens rurais contrastando-as ao narrador culto. A partir de 1930, o regionalismo nordestino abriu mão dessa tendência satírica e aproximou do registro coloquial tanto a fala dos personagens como a do narrador (FISCHER, 2005, p. 33-34).
A literatura regionalista costumava adotar a convenção realista e com ela registrou matérias sociais de diversas culturas de povos que habitam um país continental. Como a colonização do país começou pelo litoral, onde os centros urbanos desenvolveram-se primeiro, a chamada literatura regionalista inclui autores diversos e referentes exteriores a esses sistemas hegemônicos. O que chamamos sertão também é uma generalidade. Recobre vastas extensões do interior do país, com diversas geografias e culturas. As diversas regiões e culturas do sertão têm em comum o fato de serem, em boa medida, excluídas da história oficial e estigmatizadas na cultura letrada. Costumamos fazer referência ao sertão segundo esquemas interpretativos que abrangem o problema do atraso, da violência, das relações de trabalho, de eventos históricos pontuais que usamos como chaves de leitura crítica da nação para propor soluções adaptadas de modelos importados. De acordo com Hansen (2000, p.192), o imaginário do intelectual brasileiro apoia-se em redes interpretativas para tentar “cercar o sertão de flores ou de arame farpado”. Guimarães Rosa aproveitou a exclusão do sertão geográfico da história oficial e o imaginário especioso que sustenta o interesse da cultura letrada sobre o sertão. Rosa inventou nesses espaços vazios a ficção do sertão usando-a como matéria em alegorias como a que aparece no conto “Hiato”.
A crítica também costuma alinhar o autor ao movimento modernista realizado, de 1922 a 1929, pelo grupo de São Paulo. Os modernistas valorizavam a pesquisa estética, o humor, a paródia, e nesse aspecto o alinhamento justifica-se. Por outro lado, as diferenças são relevantes. Os modernistas partilhavam um projeto de atualização estética da literatura brasileira. Para isso, por vezes fizeram uso de coloquialismos, celebraram a contribuição do pensamento selvagem em detrimento do racionalismo atribuído ao colonizador, e tinham em vista o privilégio da matéria nacional.
No caso de Guimarães Rosa, a inventividade não se regula por esses postulados. Rosa usa a língua de um modo muito inventivo que faz dela a ficção de uma fala que motiva a relação do significante com a significação. Rosa explora o potencial significante da língua na ficção de uma fala semelhante a que teria sido falada antes de Babel (HANSEN, 2007, p.59 e 61). A crítica ao racionalismo, que é de interesse universal, realiza-se com procedimentos de não-senso. Combina matéria social sertaneja a paródias tanto de textos regionalistas como de textos do mundo todo, que incluem filosofia, religião, botânica, literatura, mitos, esoterismo, etc.
O hiato: uma pausa para a reflexão que indetermina o futuro
Tutaméia é um livro propriamente inventivo. Cada um de seus quarenta contos tem duas ou três páginas. Tem quatro prefácios intercalados aos contos. Esses prefácios não cumprem a função explicativa esperada, pois são enigmáticos, anedóticos, e apenas o último é narrado em primeira pessoa. A configuração do livro também é bastante peculiar e detalhada. Um detalhe muito significativo para a interpretação do estilo é o índice de leitura que aparece no começo e, outra vez, no final do livro com algumas modificações. A repetição do índice já sugere que a leitura do livro não se conclui. Cada índice é epigrafado por uma citação de Schopenhauer que promete iluminação desde que o leitor tenha paciência para uma segunda leitura e relacione as partes ao todo orgânico. O autor é irônico ao chancelar a metáfora da obra orgânica na epígrafe de um livro que propõe alegorias de ficções que comunicam a validade do artifício e deformam a substancialidade das retóricas que referem. Como o conto “Hiato” que alegoriza deformações na forma e conclui, revertendo o platonismo, que a ficção ilumina o mundo sensível definido por decisões implicadas no exercício de coragem da representação.
No índice do livro, os títulos dos contos e dos prefácios são listados em ordem alfabética e vão de A, “Aletria e hermenêutica”, a Z, “Zingaresca”. A ordem alfabética dos títulos é interrompida na vez da letra “G” que apenas reaparece para formar a ordem das iniciais do nome do autor, JGR. Os contos são “João Porém, o criador de perus”, “Grande Gedeão” e “Reminisção”. No hiato da quebra da ordem alfabética e os contos da ordem JGR, há um conto que tematiza os espaços vazios que indeterminam pontos decisivos na representação. O próprio título do conto, “Hiato”, faz referência à pausa reflexiva que acompanha o efeito de indeterminação.
O primeiro prefácio de Tutaméia, “Aletria e hermenêutica”, define a estória como um modo de ser que nega a história. Essa negação não significa um desinteresse do autor pela história, nem uma deliberação à fantasia, nem um ponto de vista barroco sobre a natureza ilusória da história. A estória coloca a história em questão ao combinar determinação e indeterminação na mimese de representações disponíveis na cultura, a começar pelos usos linguísticos. O autor define a estória como ser que quer ser ficção, que não quer ser como um esquema realista de leitura da história que representasse um ponto de vista determinante e exclusivo.
O ser estória instrumentaliza técnicas da poesia para efetuar transcendência. A inventividade dessas técnicas subtrativas é proporcional às grandezas ou aos padrões de representação que esvaziam. As práticas discursivas, históricas, constituem a aparência motivada das significações que, à medida que circulam, parecem determinadas. Quando a poesia subtrai ou recusa os usos costumeiros dos signos, acaba deslocando as significações e evidencia que elas são decisões que tomamos ao relacionar os signos. A técnica mais inventiva, porque é a mais subtrativa, é o “mecanismo dos mitos” (ROSA, 1979, p.5). As determinações atuais do espaço são estudadas pelas ciências duras (física, química, biologia, geografia, etc) e as determinações do tempo são estudadas pelas ciências que interpretam processos históricos (psicologia, história, sociologia, economia, antropologia, etc). As narrativas míticas reduzem ao mínimo ou mesmo suspendem as determinações do espaço-tempo para consagrar um princípio de realidade ou um sentido ontológico. As narrativas míticas usam largamente a indeterminação para comunicar um sentido essencial a qualquer um interessado em conceber a negação de um limite, em transcender uma determinação.
A literatura de Rosa faz uso de indeterminação para intervir com atenção filológica nos usos históricos da língua e nas retóricas implicadas neles. O conto “Hiato” assinala um critério para o uso da indeterminação: que ela reporte a um sentido futuro. Trata-se de uma estratégia diversa das indeterminações dos mitos que sacralizam realidades vigentes em algum lugar distante ou no passado, com efeitos nostálgicos. Se nos mitos as indeterminações sacralizam o sentido de uma realidade primordial, no conto os lugares vazios abertos por cada uso linguístico de não-senso requerem uma pausa para uma reflexão inconcludente que se complica ainda mais, na segunda leitura. A ausência das cercas no mato brabo arrebanha os vaqueiros na graça da poesia, jogo livre, e efetua indeterminação regulada apenas pela consciência do perigo implicado em decidir ou representar.
O maior touro ou a total desforma
Tutaméia opta pelo não-senso que dismantle ou subtrai a noção clássica de enredo. Nos contos de Tutaméia, cada final narra uma superação inusitada da situação limite inicial ou do significado dela. Essa superação apoia-se nas operações de não-senso incorporadas aos usos linguísticos em todo o conto e, principalmente, na guinada transcendental que finaliza a anedota. O leitor, habituado a procurar pela lógica interna do enredo, acata o final como um desafio ou enigma e passa a estabelecer conexões de ordens incompatíveis, em uma segunda leitura. Na segunda leitura, os efeitos de indeterminação deslocam a significação da primeira leitura que contornava a linha da anedota antes que o final a estremecesse completamente. No conto “Hiato”, um touro temível figura a indeterminação que efetua deformações na forma. Logo após o confronto com o touro, os cavaleiros sobem a colina. Na distância que parece paralisar os contornos vagos ou indeterminados do sentido superior, a recordação do perigo recente evidencia as limitações ou determina os cavaleiros em relação ao touro: “escuro como o futuro, mau objeto para a memória” (ROSA, 1979, p.62).
A alegoria narra o trajeto dos cavaleiros e tem como clímax o aparecimento repentino do touro que qualifica como total desforma. A função comunicativa é assegurada pela gramaticalidade da sintaxe e pela clareza da anedota mínima: a travessia, o encontro com o touro e a subida da colina onde os cavaleiros descansam. A ficção da unidade do conto parodia e deforma a encenação de um dia da poesia trágica que a Poética toma por modelo. No sertão, a travessia intrépida começa pela manhã e termina no refrigério da noite. O confronto com o caráter do touro é decisivo e obrigatório, porque os três cavaleiros veem-se entre o touro e uma via estreita à beira do abismo. Tiveram de passar um por vez. O primeiro a passar foi o hesitante e jovem Põe-põe encorajado pelo velho Nhácio que se pôs na retaguarda afirmando que a coragem também deve ser praticada. A situação de perigo evidencia o julgamento ou a decisão implicada na representação. Os cavaleiros sobem a colina e deixam para trás o rio, o devir. A conclusão anti-platônica do narrador e o descanso ou a pausa sucedem o remate do pôr do sol. O narrador medita sobre a reação do vaqueiro Nhácio ao confronto recente com o touro e extrai dela uma lição que deforma a hierarquia platônica do mundo das sombras que recebe luz ilusória, em vez do sol da razão. “De onde vem então o medo? Ou este terráqueo mundo é de trevas, o que resta do sol tentando iludir-nos do contrário.” (ROSA, 1979, p. 63) Na primeira leitura, essa lição reitera o respeito pela cultura oral do negro Nhácio que serve como matéria da qual o autor apropria-se na elaboração da alegoria que interpretamos depois, numa segunda leitura.
O narrador, Põe-põe e Nhácio
A alegoria emprega alguns neologismos decisivos para o sentido da representação como desforma, vocabulário dicionarizado e matéria social sertaneja relativa ao índio Põe-põe e ao cafuzo Nhácio. A seleção dessas matérias, que mobilizam pressupostos bem determinados, evita os lugares comuns da violência, da precariedade técnica e da fala caipira caricata. O horizonte da violência e da ausência do Estado é amortecido na alegoria que preenche com poesia a narração bastante descritiva do trajeto. A violência e o confronto com perigos da natureza são temas tratados apenas de passagem, quase no final do conto. Há apenas uma rápida menção ao assassinato do pai do índio, sem maiores explicações. O encontro com o touro quase resume a anedota e mesmo assim ocupa apenas um parágrafo do conto. Em Tutaméia, as situações de violência e perigo ocupam poucas linhas de cada conto, embora sejam decisivas na constituição das situações limite que os finais revertem. O conto faz menção à violência dos espaços fora da lei e aos perigos primários dos pastos sem cerca, mas a alegoria difere muito dos lugares comuns da literatura regionalista.
Rosa é conhecido pelo uso inventivo da língua, ainda que nos textos dele predomine o vocabulário corrente e a “sintaxe telegráfica” não prejudique o valor da comunicação (DANIEL, 1968, p.31 e 127). O leitor urbano hoje é maioria, no Brasil. O léxico pode oferecer dificuldades, mesmo em se tratando de regionalismos e brasileirismos. No curto período de produção de Rosa, o Brasil passou de um país rural a urbano. A rapidez do processo de modernização também criou um hiato da cultura dos pais à dos filhos. Uma literatura como a de Rosa, que também refere regiões fora dos centros urbanos hegemônicos, também cumpre a função de inventar memória para o Brasil rural que se esvaziou em poucas décadas. As dificuldades de vocabulário não chegam a impedir que o leitor de “Hiato” compreenda a anedota ou a fábula, já na primeira leitura. O uso estratégico de neologismos e vocabulário desconhecido, regional ou não, enriquece a segunda leitura da alegoria. A primeira leitura pode interpretar o conto como uma estória realista que valoriza a sabedoria oral do índio e do mestiço. Uma segunda leitura pode ampliar a significação da fábula e encará-la como uma alegoria por meio da qual o autor propõe pontos de vista sobre o ficcional.
A alegoria tem três personagens. O primeiro é o narrador que parece ser apenas um observador e informa a participação dele na travessia apenas em um detalhe significativo. Quando o touro aparece, o narrador diz que ele e os outros cavaleiros sentiam sob as coxas o susto dos cavalos. E que o medo faz os cavalos roncarem como um homem que dorme. Algumas vezes em Tutaméia, não apenas no conto “Hiato”, o autor compara os homens e o gado. Os vaqueiros conduzem o gado e são profissionais autônomos, como boa parte dos escritores. Considerando a posição do conto “Hiato” no índice de títulos do livro, o conto faz parte do grupo de contos que dizem respeito a autoria. O autor porta-se como um canalizador de paródias e como um ouvido aberto que propõe pausas para a reflexão sobre representações que circulam, no mundo. Os outros dois vaqueiros são o cafuzo Nhácio e o índio Põe-põe.
No final do conto, Nhácio queixa-se da velhice e diz que não serve mais para conduzir o gado. O moço Põe-põe, que é um parente dele, discorda mostrando fidelidade e reconhecimento pela retaguarda recente. O cafuzo e o índio constituem uma linhagem miscigenada. Nela, a etnia transforma-se e ambas as especificidades socioculturais ganham outras significações. Na alegoria, a mestiçagem figura a constituição movente do sentido. O nome Nhácio parece imitar a pronúncia do nome Inácio por parte dos ancestrais brasileiros vindos do Cabo Verde e da Guiné-Bissau. Possivelmente, a presença marcante dos jesuítas desde o começo da colonização do Brasil popularizou o nome do Santo Inácio de Loyola. Ainda hoje, é um nome muito popular no Brasil. Podemos ficar com dois exemplos interessantes, de brasileiros. Um deles é Ignácio da Catingueira, que foi um escravo e trovador nascido no final do século XIX. Outro é o pintor naïf Ignácio da Nega, contemporâneo de Rosa. O sobrenome “Nega” funciona como uma referência carinhosa à mãe negra do pintor que deu a ele o nome do papa negro.
O primeiro Superior Geral da Companhia de Jesus foi Inácio de Loyola que também ficou conhecido como o papa negro por causa da batina negra que o diferenciava da batina branca do papa. Viveu no período que ficou conhecido como “barroco” e elaborou algumas técnicas de meditação que desenvolvem as faculdades mentais por meio da imaginação e da empatia. Os Exercícios espirituais dirigem a imaginação do praticante a visualizar acontecimentos como os narrados nos Evangelhos, o inferno, a batalha do bem e do mal, a paixão, a morte e a glória de Cristo, etc. Empregam técnicas da imagem, tropos e jogos verbais com a intenção de ativar a imaginação e a compreensão do meditador. Loyola ensinava a meditação como um meio de ordenar a vida porque retira da alma os afetos desordenados para capacitá-la a receber a luz divina (LOYOLA, 2000).
Nos textos, nas artes plásticas e nas cerimônias públicas do período “barroco” eram frequentes os motivos do luto e da morte, cenas macabras, as tópicas da ilusão, da ficção e do sonho. O gosto pela alegoria exprimia uma visão do mundo para a qual a morte era a significação última de uma história ilusória. A atmosfera de luto dizia respeito à natureza que consideravam emudecida e embaçada pelo pecado. “A própria escrita, que representa a fala que reescreve a natureza e a história, torna-se vã, golpeada pela plenitude da absoluta ciência divina sempre além.” (HANSEN, 2006, p.205) Uma linhagem miscigenada ou transfiguradora liga Nhácio a Põe-põe. Cada parte do nome desdobrado do índio leva um acento que soa lúdico e remete ao verbo “pôr” que significa colocar, narrar, deslocar, fazer figurar, dispor. Dobrado e sem o acento lúdico, resta o nome Poe que parece referir-se a Edgar Allan Poe, o mestre do conto.
Em um ensaio crítico sobre Hawthorne, Poe (1973, p. 125-141) fez algumas concessões à alegoria que coincide com a concepção de ficção por parte do contista. A ficção deve revelar uma realidade dupla para o leitor. Através do sentido aparente que a narração explicita, deve fluir a sugestão de um sentido oculto que surpreende o leitor quando o desfecho do texto dá unidade ao efeito. Poe considerava a unidade de efeito como o ponto mais vital da ficção, e a alegoria efetua essa unidade. Em contrapartida, Poe se queixa da alegoria tradicional por ela sacrificar a seriedade e a verossimilhança. A aversão de Poe às alegorias tradicionais devia-se ao fato delas dizerem respeito a concepções sem substância, idealidades. A alegoria tradicional constitui uma ponte ou uma justificativa metafísica para um determinado estado de coisas. Em contraposição a ela, Poe propõe que a alegoria seja usada na destruição das ficções naturalizadas pelo senso comum. A alegoria pode servir a um ato desmistificador de ficções partilhadas na cultura como se fossem verdades substanciais. Pode constituir um fato desde que o autor use-a como instrumento para derrubar outra alegoria, uma ficção ou um senso comum. Ao destruir as ilusões da superfície, a alegoria abre espaço para que as volições do leitor venham à tona, o que acontece quando o leitor relaciona a experiência dele ao efeito sugestivo da alegoria. Poe acreditava que a alegoria deve ser usada para destruir identificações forçosas de signos e coisas, e concebia o mundo como um espaço de ilusões que encobrem realidades sinistras.
O conto “Hiato” refere as concepções da alegoria de Loyola e Poe. Desloca nelas a noção platônica de que uma realidade substancial conteria a verdade que o mundo falseia. O conto de Rosa subtrai da noção dualista da realidade a hierarquia segundo a qual o mundo sensível estaria aquém da realidade metafísica e iludido quanto aos maquinismos do mundo histórico. Afirma a forma como técnica retórica da desforma e o caráter ficcional da alegoria que, mesmo assim, tem validade como instrumento de indeterminação das representações vigentes. Segundo essa concepção, o espaço aberto pela desforma gera consciência e prepara lugar para um futuro diverso.
