The title of this photograph is Romanticism is Ultimately Fatal. This photograph has brought me more rewards & public recognition than perhaps any other work I've made in my 40 years as a photographer.
Ironically, I made this photo collage during one of the lowest times in my life, a period of deep romantic disappointment.
I didn't start out to become a photographer. That my path led me from upper middle class Los Angeles where my twin sister, and I were born to living with and photographing the people, homes and streets of West Oakland, California was a surprise.
West Oakland was where I first took up my camera with conviction, believing that photographs could make a difference in people’s lives.
The life I was leading was nothing I'd imagined growing up as the daughter of Jewish parents. My mother, an educated, and rather aristocratic American and my father, German Holocaust refugee.

Source text - English The second opening of Sergio De La Torre and Vicky Funari’s Maquilapolis (2006) re-sets the watch of the scene: the line is drawn aerially, we witness the arbitrariness of cartography (what historian and cultural geographer of Mexico, Raymond Craib, terms the “spatial drama of state fixations and fugitive sites” [2004]), two nations’ division. In turn, the viewer comes face-to-face with a human (read “female”) landscape, maquila workers’ who perform for the documentary’s lens a curious version of sociologist Marcel Mauss’ “techniques of the body”(1973).
In separate interviews, Maquilapolis’i filmmakers explained to me that they wanted to foreground the performative in their documentary (2007). They began to notice that when each woman they featured Spike of work, she inevitably reverted to an enactment of the assembly line’s monotony. Beijing that reversion as a branding sequence, the pair hit upon the idea of punctuating Maquilapolis with it (a gesture reminiscent of Russian biomechanical performance). They intended to highlight that which marks the subject’s internalization of geography, specifically neoliberalism’s Taylor/tailoring of the Yorker to accommodate capitalism’s flighty patterns.
