- Przyjechałem tutaj gdy miałem 28 lat, niewiele więcej niż ty obecnie. Znałem już wówczas język francuski. Najbardziej uwiódł mnie bezkres morza, postanowiłem zostać w tym miejscu na zawsze. Każdy dzień, w ciągu bez mała czterdziestu lat które tu spędziłem, był jak odpamiętywanie błogiego czasu spędzonego kiedyś na Atlantydzie, oblanej zewsząd niekończącym się błękitem fal. Zdałem sobie z tego w pełni sprawę kiedy po mnie przyszli na początku maja 1944, by mnie niedługo potem zagazować w obozie koncentracyjnym. Pamiętam, że towarzyszyły mi podobne emocje jak wtedy, gdy musieliśmy opuszczać w pośpiechu nasz ziemski raj z powodu inwazji intruzów. Podobne, ale nie te same. Z jedną decydującą o wszystkim różnicą.
Siedzieliśmy w słoneczny kwietniowy poranek na dachowym tarasie Oceanarium w Monako. Rozciągał się stąd oszałamiający widok na morze i park miejski po przeciwnej stronie. Było upojnie, zapach słonej bryzy, szyszek, kwitnących krzewów i ziół docierał do nas zewsząd, tak samo jak śpiew cieszących się z wiosny ptaków.

J’avais 28 ans quand je suis arrivé ici, je n’étais pas plus vieux que tu ne l’es aujourd’hui. Je connaissais déjà le français. C’est la mer à perte de vue qui m’a le plus captivé, et j’ai décidé de rester là pour toujours. J’ai passé chaque jour des sans peine quarante ans que j’ai vécus ici à me remémorer un temps de béatitude en Atlantide, entièrement engloutie sous le bleu infini des vagues. J’en ai pris pleinement conscience le jour où ils sont venus me chercher début mai 1944 pour bientôt me gazer dans un camp de concentration. Je me souviens avoir ressenti des émotions similaires lorsque nous avons dû quitter hâtivement notre paradis terrestre à cause d’une invasion d’intrus. Similaires mais pas identiques. Il n’y avait qu’une seule différence, mais elle changeait tout.
C’était un matin lumineux d’avril, nous étions assis sur la terrasse du toit du Musée Océanographique de Monaco. Devant nous s’étendait une vue éblouissante sur la mer, de l’autre côté, le parc de la ville. L’ambiance était exaltante, des parfums de brise salée, de pommes de pin, d’arbustes en fleurs et d’herbes de Provence nous parvenaient de tous côtés, avec en prime, le chant des oiseaux qui fêtaient le printemps.
