I am originally from the USA but I came to Spain at sixteen years old, so I am both bilingual and bi-cultural. I did my undergraduate work (BSc. Business Administration: Management and Operations) in English and my Master's studies (Hotel Management) in Spanish, and I am currently studying in Catalan (Biomedicine). I have a deep understanding of both Spanish and American/English cultural phenomena, idioms, literary language, way of thinking, and world views. I have lived and worked extensively in both countries.
Before finding my vocation as translator and interpreter, I was an unabashed job-hopper (I got bored), which has been a boon to my translating career as I have developed an in-depth knowledge of a wide variety of fields. Accounting, non-profits, veterinary, retail, tourism, hotels, real estate, tax law, finance and revenue management, gastronomy/restaurants, human resources, horse training, marketing, language teaching, and startup management are the fields I have worked in. I have had to translate as part of the job description in most of them. As I am also currently pursuing a degree in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Barcelona, I have a solid science base. When combined with my personal interests, which have also gone changing over the years, all of this makes for a wildly varied, bilingual knowledge base that makes me an experienced and well-rounded translator.
I also have experience interpreting, both consecutive and simultaneous, in a variety of contexts. I have interpreted for the U.S. court system, for business meetings, and for medical conferences. My mind works very quickly, enabling me to offer fluid and accurate interpretations of the spoken word. My Spanish is excellent, with just a hint of an accent. I have taken the C2 level DELE exam.
In my translations, I believe in striking a balance between faithfulness to the source document and accurately conveying the original ideas. I try my best to translate not only words, but ideas, along with their tone, connotation, historical and cultural significance, and style of writing. I look to induce the intended effect on the reader, even across languages and borders. I am highly adaptable and can translate an artsy project just as well as a technical manual, changing my writing style as needed for each project. I have a highly abstract mind and therefore can perform translations and interpretations on many different levels, for many different audiences. I have a sound understanding of the power of word choice and marketing as a function of translation.
