Source text - Arabic في المجتلد الروماني القديم، احتشد جمهور متحمس مؤلف من ٠٠٠,٥٠ شخص في حالة ترقب شديد. لقد بدأ هذا الترقب يوم ذاع الاعلان عن «ألعاب مثيرة للغاية لا يمكن ان تفوَّت»، واستمر يتزايد طوال الايام التالية.
مع ان العروض السحرية والتمثيليات الايمائية والمهرجين والمسرحيات الهزلية ظلت تجذب الجماهير الى المسارح المحلية، كانت الالعاب في المجتلد شيئا مميزا جدا. وكانت قساوة المقاعد وهموم الحياة اليومية ستُنسى كلها عندما تبدأ الاثارة امام اعين المتفرجين.
ظهر اولا المغنّون، وتبعهم الكاهن في ردائه الخاص. وكان حمَلة البخور يسيرون امام موكب من اصنام تمثّل مختلف الآلهة والإلاهات. وقد رُفعت هذه الاصنام عاليا كي يراها الجميع، مما جعل الالعاب تبدو وكأنها تحظى بالبركة الالهية.
مذبحة الحيوانات
ها العروض الترفيهية الكبيرة على وشك الابتداء. في البداية، أُطلقت في المجتلد نعامات وزرافات — حيوانات لم يرها كثيرون من قبل — دون ان يكون لها ايّ منفذ للهرب. ثم قامت مجموعة كبيرة من الرماة المهرة، التي تحمل السهام والأقواس، بقتل هذه الحيوانات العاجزة حتى آخر واحد منها، مما ابهج الجماهير الساعية وراء الاثارة.
بعد ذلك، ولمتعة الجماهير الهاتفة، حان وقت مشاهدة صراع الحياة والموت بين فيلَين ضخمَين وُضعت على انيابهما مسامير حديدية طويلة وحادة. ودوّى المكان بالتصفيق حين سقط احد الحيوانَين الجبارَين على الرمل المشبع بالدم ومات متأثرا بجراحه. لقد نجح هذا المشهد في اثارة شهية الجماهير للّعبة الرئيسية التي كانت ستبدأ بعد دقائق.
