Chapter 2: A Return to the Garden of Eden
In a sense, the first step of the Prayer is a figurative return to the Garden of Eden. We are seeking a place where we can be unclothed before God like Adam and Eve once were, but without the shame that overwhelmed them when they sinned. One of the greatest misconceptions that many Christians share is that we cannot approach God with our weakness and sin. We somehow believe that our failures compel God to reject us. This belief couldn’t be further from the truth. God didn’t hide from Adam and Eve when they sinned: it was God that went looking for them after they both ate the apple. We were the ones that attempted to hide, and we continue to hide from him to this day.
Consequently, the first step of the Prayer is to stop hiding. God did not clothe Adam and Eve in the garden because of what they did with the apple. That is, God did not cover us because he couldn’t stand to look at us uncovered after we sinned. God clothed Adam and Eve in the garden because we (humankind) could no longer look at God the same way after we sinned. He clothed us because we could no longer stand before him unclothed. In other words, God’s view or opinion of us didn’t change, our opinion and view of God changed! We did not see him as someone who could love us through our failures. Instead, we came to see him as someone who would reject and punish us for our failures.

Capítulo 2: Un retorno al huerto de Edén
En un sentido, el primer paso de la Oración es un retorno figurativo al huerto de Edén. Estamos buscando un lugar donde podamos estar desnudos delante de Dios, tal y como Adán y Eva una vez lo estuvieron, pero sin la vergüenza que los abrumó cuando pecaron. Uno de los grandes conceptos equivocados compartidos por muchos cristianos es que no podemos acercarnos a Dios con nuestra debilidad y nuestro pecado. De alguna forma, creemos que nuestros fracasos obligan a Dios a rechazarnos. Esta creencia no podría estar más lejos de la verdad. Dios no se escondió de Adán y Eva cuando ellos pecaron: fue Dios quien fue en su busca luego que comieron del fruto. Fuimos nosotros los que intentamos escondernos y seguimos escondiéndonos de él hasta el día de hoy.
En consecuencia, el primer paso de la Oración es dejar de escondernos. Dios no vistió a Adán y Eva en el huerto por lo que habían hecho con el fruto. Es decir, Dios no nos cubrió porque no podía soportar vernos descubiertos después de haber pecado. Dios vistió a Adán y Eva en el huerto porque nosotros (la humanidad) ya no podíamos ver a Dios de la misma manera luego de haber pecado. Nos vistió porque ya no podíamos estar desnudos delante de él. En otras palabras, el parecer o la opinión que Dios tenía de nosotros no cambió, ¡fue nuestra opinión y nuestro parecer de Dios los que cambiaron! No lo vimos como alguien que podía amarnos a través de nuestras fallas. En vez de ello, llegamos a verlo como alguien que nos rechazaría y castigaría por nuestros fracasos.
