Shah Abbas was the fifth ruler of the Safavid dynasty which came to
power in 1501, reuniting Iran within its historic borders for the first time
since the Arab conquest and imposing the Shi’i form of Islam which has
defined the country ever since. It is not possible to understand the challenges
which faced Abbas without an understanding of what happened
between 1501 and 1587, when he was put on the throne at the age of seventeen
in a coup d’état. This is covered in the first two chapters of the book,
which also deal with Abbas’s birth and upbringing. | Translation - Persian (Farsi)
شاه عباس پنجمین فرمانروای سلسلۀ صفویه بود که در 1501م./907ق. به قدرت رسید و برای نخستین بار پس از فتح ایران بهدست اعراب، این کشور را در درون مرزهای تاریخیاش بار دیگر متحد ساخت. او شکل شیعی اسلام را مذهب رسمی کشور اعلام کرد که از آن زمان تاکنون مشخصۀ این کشور بوده است. درک چالشهای پیش روی عباس بدون درک رویدادهای میان سالهای 1501م./907ق. (زمانی که طی کودتایی عباس را در سن هفده سالگی به قدرت رساندند) و 1587م./995ق. ممکن نیست. دو فصل نخست این کتاب به این مسأله میپردازد که تولد و دوران رشد عباس را نیز در بر میگیرد. |

This is a turbulent period of political and religious upheaval, of foreign and
civil war, during which a new theocratic state took shape in Iran, legitimised
through a mix of heterodox Shi’ism and mystic Sufism. The Safavid ruler – or
shah – was regarded as divine by his followers, while the state was supported
by the military power of Turkoman tribes – tribes that spoke a dialect of Turkish
– and the age-old administrative skills of the indigenous Iranian population.
This newly emergent and dynamic Shi’i Iran briefly threatened to dominate
the Muslim world before being thrown onto the defensive by the hostile Sunni
Muslim powers on its borders – the Ottoman Turkish Empire in the west and
the Uzbek khanate of Central Asia in the east. Meanwhile, Iran began to be
torn apart internally by the Turkoman tribes which fought for supremacy whenever
the shah was weak or a minor. This provided the background to Abbas’s
youth, which is described in Chapter 2, when he saw many of his relatives killed
on the orders of his half-crazed uncle, when he was ruling as shah, his mother
and elder brother murdered by warring tribal chiefs and large swathes of the
country occupied by Ottoman and Uzbek forces. The absence of any clear rule
of succession enabled the tribal chiefs to use Safavid princes as pawns in their
power struggle, and the chapter ends with one of these warlords placing the
seventeen-year-old Abbas on the throne in a coup which ousted his father. | Translation - Persian (Farsi)
این دوران پر از آشوب و ناآرامیهای سیاسی و مذهبی است، دوران جنگهای داخلی و خارجی که طی آن حکومت جدیدی در ایران شکل گرفت؛ حکومتی که مشروعیت خود را از آمیزهای از تشیع دگراندیش و تصوف عرفانی میگرفت. حاکم صفوی ــ یا شاه ــ از سوی پیروانش خدایی تلقی میشد و درعینحال نیروی نظامی قبایل ترکمن ــ قبایلی که گویشی از ترکی داشتند ــ و مهارتهای دیرینۀ مردم بومی ایران در امور اجرایی کشور پایههای حکومت را تثبیت و از آن حمایت میکرد. تا مدتی کوتاه خطر آن میرفت که این ایران شیعه پر توان و نوظهور جهان اسلام را زیر سلطۀ خود بگیرد. اما اندک زمانی بعد قدرتهای متخاصم سنی در مرزهای این کشور یعنی امپراتوری عثمانی در غرب و خانات ازبک آسیای میانه در شرق آن را در موضع دفاع قرار دادند. در همین حال قبایل ترکمن که هرگاه شاه را ضعیف یا صغیر میدیدند برای سلطه بر سایر قبایل جنگ به راه میانداختند، ایران را از درون در آستانۀ فروپاشی قرار داده بودند. این دورنمایی از دوران جوانی عباس بود که در فصل دو شرح داده میشود. در آن دوران او شاهد قتل بسیاری از بستگان خود بهدست عموی نیمه دیوانهاش بود که شاه مملکت بود. در همین دوران مادر و برادر بزرگترش بهدست سران جنگ افروز قبایل کشته شدند و اراضی وسیعی از کشور به اشغال نیروهای عثمانی و ازبک درآمد. نبود هرگونه قانون مشخص برای جانشینی، سران قبایل را قادر میساخت در جنگ قدرت شاهزادگان صفوی را آلت دست قرار دهند. این فصل با یکی از این سپه سالاران به پایان میرسد که طی کودتایی عباس هفده ساله را بهجای پدرش به تخت مینشاند. |
