Source text - English While loading one of the 16-in guns, an open breech explosion occurred when the powder ignited for unknown reasons before the hatch was fully closed. Forty-seven men working inside the turret were immediately killed by the combination of intense heat, toxic gases and smoke caused by the ensuing explosion. The resulting fire lasted for 90 minutes, but never ignited the magazine thanks to the quick action of the ship’s crew. Had the magazine ignited, Battleship Iowa would have experienced an even bigger disaster.
You can find a memorial plaque honoring the 47 sailors lost that day on the starboard side of turret two.
