Source text - English Mr. Head awakened to discover that the room was full of moonlight. He sat up and stared at the floor boards—the color of silver—and then at the ticking on his pillow, which might have been brocade, and after a second, he saw half of the moon five feet away in his shaving mirror, paused as if it were waiting for his permission to enter. It rolled forward and cast a dignifying light on everything. The straight chair against the wall looked stiff and attentive as if it were awaiting an order and Mr. Head's trousers, hanging to the back of it, had an almost noble air, like the garment some great man had just flung to his servant….
The above opening to a short story by Flannery O'Connor is, to readers content with grasping information, straightforward enough. It introduces a character, Mr. Head, waking up at night and noticing moonlight. To readers who enjoy the practice of reading, the opening is much, much more.
Two approaches seem to me the difference between reading as a skill and reading as an art. The first is quite enough. From knowing what STOP means through understanding a scholarly essay or a legal brief, the necessary skill varies greatly, can always be refined, and lets us negotiate life with some measure of control. Reading as art, not Art (once, depressingly called "critical" reading) is another matter. Like the avid devotion to other arts, it develops over time in any number of ways, takes all sorts of routes, and has many origins.
My own reading skills were enhanced in schools, but my pleasure in, my passion for the art of reading came long before. It came in childhood and it began with listening. Not only was I a radio child who grew up in the decades when radio was paramount, when being mesmerized by the dramas and reenactments from a speaker box was commonplace, I was also surrounded by adults who told stories, reshaped and solicited them from each other as well as their children. The result was a heavy reliance on my own imagination to provide detail; the specific color of things, the feel of the weather, the space characters occupied, their physical features, their motives, why they behaved as they did, and especially the sound of their speech, where so much meaning lay. Listening required me to surrender to the narrator's world while remaining alert inside it. That Alice-in-Wonderland combination of willing acceptance coupled with intense inquiry is still the way I read literature: slowly, digging for the hidden, questioning or relishing the choices the author made, eager to envision what is there, noticing what is not. In listening and in reading, it is when I surrender to the language, enter it, that I see clearly. Yet only if I remain attentive to its choices can I understand deeply. Sometimes the experience is profound, harrowing, beautiful; other times enraging, contemptible, unrewarding. Whatever the consequence, the practice itself is riveting. I don't need to "like" the work; I want instead to "think" it...

Столът до стената застана мирно и нащрек, като че ли очакваше заповед, а панталонът на мистър Хед, който висеше на облегалката, сега имаше почти аристократичен вид, сякаш някоя знатна особа току-що го бе метнала на прислужника си…
Това е началото на разказ от Фланъри О’Конър и за читатели, които се задоволяват с разбиране на информацията, то е достатъчно ясно. Тук е въведен персонажът мистър Хед, който се събужда посред нощ и вижда лунната светлина. За хората, които обичат да четат, този откъс е много, много повече.
За мен разликата между четенето като умение и четенето като изкуство се състои в подхода. Първото е напълно достатъчно; то варира от познаване на думата “спирам” като значение до разбиране на научни статии и адвокатски дела; то може да се усъвършенства и да ни даде известна власт над живота ни. Четенето като изкуство, не Изкуство (някога обезкуражаващо наричано “критическо” четене), е друго нещо. Също като страстната отдаденост на другите изкуства, то започва от някъде и взима различни посоки.
Моите четивни умения се развиха в училище, но страстта към четенето и удоволствието от него се зародиха още в детството ми. Започнах със слушане. Като дете, израсло в ерата на радио, и аз като много други слушах в захлас радио пиеси и техните повторения. Бях заобиколена от възрастни, които разказваха истории, преправяха ги, търсеха ги и ги предаваха помежду си, както и на нас, техните деца. ВЪВЕДЕНИЕ
Динамичните промени, настъпващи в съвременният живот, в частност развитието на изчислителните и компютърните технологии неизбежно водят до необходимост от промяна в потребностите от знания и информация на модерния човек още в ранната му ученическа възраст. Това от своя страна води до необходимост от промяна в подходите и методите при удовлетворяване на тези потребности.
Математиката, като предмет, който се изучава през целия курс на обучение според държавните изисквания в нашата страна оставя трайни следи при формиране на личността на ученика, като изгражда система от знания и логически умения, влияе върху развитието на творческата мисъл на младият характер.
Разработените идеи за нови подходи на преподаване и учене, съчетани с високите възможности на съвременните компютърни и изчислителни технологии, запознаването с една различна научна и практическа позиция би могло да обогати опита на преподавателите в областта на математиката.
Приложението на модела „Съвременни методи за преподаване” е ориентирано към действащи преподаватели по математика, както и към обучаващи се такива.
ИЗЛОЖЕНИЕ
Усвояването на знания е сложна познавателна дейност, при която обучаемият не само приема знанията, но ги преобразува, адаптира, избирателно реагира и активно ги усвоява, като създава трайна свързана система от логически връзки и мисловни процеси, които след това да му послужат в решаването на реални проблеми с нематематически характер.
Решаването на задача - проект с приложен характер изисква създаване на завършен продукт, в който се използват вече придобитите знания и умения, както и допълване на знанията, като се използва методът „учене чрез правене“.Създаването на проекти не е заложено в учебната програма по математика в задължителната и профилираната подготовка, което допълнително усложнява работата на учениците, поради този факт консултантската роля на учителя може да бъде решаваща за успешното справяне с проблема.
При създаване на проекти, учениците трябва да са усвоили минимума от знания по темата, отнесена за математическата част и трябва да са готови да приложат своите знания на практика. Използвайки придобитите знания, те ги затвърждават и придобиват опит при решаване на задачи – проблеми от други научни области.
Създаването и решаването на математически модели е една от основните дейности, които учениците трябва да овладеят, тъй като математическото моделиране е основен подход при прилагане на математиката в другите науки. В този смисъл е особено важно задълбоченото осмисляне на самото понятие математически модел – възпроизвеждане на даден обект или явление чрез система от математически зависимости ([5], стр. 183). Според действащия училищен курс по математика, учениците се сблъскват предимно с математически модели, в които се използват уравнения или системи уравнения. В крайна сметка, понятието математически модел се възприема твърде едностранчиво. Пропуска се една възможност учениците да бъдат обучавани в използването му в разнообразни ситуации, както и при анализиране на същите. Да разгледаме няколко типични случая, в които решаването на даден проблем е свързано с приложение на тригонометрични функции и графика на тригонометрична функция.
Научна област: Океанология
Задача 1 В таблицата са дадени данни за нивото на водата, измерени при вълнолом по различно време. Всички данни са взети толкова часа след полунощ, колкото са посочени в таблицата, в първия ден от месеца.

2. Знания за графично решаване на тригонометрични уравнения
Дейности на учителя, свързани с подпомагане на работата на ученика: 1. Дава предварителни разяснения на ученика за поставената му задача
2. Определя критерии, според които ще оценява решението на поставената задача
3. Учителят консултира ученика във връзка със всички възникнали въпроси в хода на решаване на задачата, без да му задава готови решения на поставения проблем
Дейности на ученика За успешното решаване на поставената задача ученика трябва да извърши следните дейности:
1. Въвежда данните в калкулатора
2. Задава въведените списъци като стойности на независима и зависима променлива на функция
3. Чертае графика
4. Чрез подходяща последователност от логически разсъждения, свързани със знанията му за тригонометричното функции и техните уравнения съставя уравнението на дадената функция
5. Чертае графиката на функцията, чието уравнение е съставил и коментира нейната приложимост с разглежданото множество от данни в таблицата.
6. Разчита графиката, като определя часът на следващият прилив, съобразявайки нейната периодичност и конкретният период
7. Анализира, систематизира и обобщава получените резултати, като писмено представя решението на задачата

Translation - English Applied Mathematics in High School Education

INTRODUCTION
The dynamic change witnessed in today’s world and particularly in computing and information technologies, makes it inevitable for modern people to demand a new kind of knowledge and information from their very first years at school. This, respectively, necessitates a change in the approaches and methods used in delivering it.
As a subject studied throughout the school curriculum in our country, mathematics actively contributes to the personal development of learners through building a system of knowledge and logical skills and impacting young minds’ overall thinking.
The here-developed ideas for novel approaches in teaching and learning using the potential of modern cutting-edge computing technologies and acquaintance with a different scientific and practical approach could enhance math teachers’ expertise.
The application of the Modern Teaching Methods model is meant for working teachers of mathematics as well as learners.
BODY
Acquision of new knowledge is a complicated cognitive process in which the learner does not just digest information but transforms and adapts it, reacts selectively and accumulates it actively by creating a solid system of logical connections and mental processes he/she would later apply in solving real life problems from non-mathematical areas.
Solving problems-projects that show mathematics’ application in real-life situations requires the successful completion of a product in which acquired knowledge and skills are applied and enhanced through the “learning by doing” method. Project making is not incorporated in the Bulgarian math curriculum, which makes students` work much harder and calls for teachers’ assistance in the solution of the problem.
Before students approach projects, they must have learnt the required minimum of topical knowledge related to mathematics and be willing to apply it in practice. In the application process knowledge is solidified and problem-solving experience in different scientific areas is gained.
The ability to develop mathematical models is one of the main skills students need to learn because it is through mathematical modelling that math is applied in other sciences. In this sense, the need for profound understanding of the concept of mathematical modelling is particularly important: recreation of an object or a phenomenon through a system of mathematical correlations ([5], p 183). According to currently used math textbooks and syllabuses students are mostly subjected to mathematical models through equations and systems of equations. This way there is a danger for the concept of mathematical model being only superficially understood. The possibility of students to be taught how to apply models in various situations and analyze them is overlooked.
Let us focus on several cases in which the solution of a problem depends on the application of trigonometric functions and a graph of a trigonometric function.
Scientific field: Oceanology
Problem 1: The table shows the depth of water measured by a pier at different times. All data is collected in the hours after midnight, as shown in the table, on the first day of the month.
Plot the data as a graph and predict the time of the next high tide. Find the equation of the function sourcing your graph.

The task is meant for Students in grade 11
Students’ basic knowledge according to the Ministry of Education curriculum Students:
1. are familiar with graphs of trigonometric functions, can connect them with their properties and apply them;
2. can make a graph of a trigonometric function using basic transformations;
3. have learnt the main types of trigonometric equations and can do equations that are reduced to them.
Extra knowledge the student needs to gain 1. Knowledge and skill in working with a Texas Instruments - 84 graphic calculator or one with similar characteristics.
2. Knowledge of graphic solution of trigonometric equations
Teacher’s activity to facilitate students’ work 1. Gives students preliminary explanation of the nature of the task
2. Sets criteria to assess the task solution
3. Provides advice if difficulties occur in the problem-solving process without giving the very solution
Student’s activity In order to solve the assigned task, the student has to do the following:
1. Enter data into the calculator
2. Set the stored data as values of an independent and dependent variable of a function
3. Draw a graph
4. Work out the equation of that function following a sequence of logical arguments based upon his/her knowledge of trigonometric functions and their equations
5. Draw the graph of the function, whose equation has been worked out, and discuss its applicability against the multiple data in the table
6. Read the graph working out the time of the next high tide and taking its regularity and the concrete time period into consideration.
7. Analyze, systemize and summarize the results and submit the problem solution in written form
Expected outcomes and benefits for the student as a result of the problem solution As a result of using the devices and methods to solve the problem, it is expected that his/her logical thinking and creative approach will be enhanced.

My interest in translating goes as far back as university; I graduated with a degree in English philology and a specialization in translation. I first tried my hand at fiction translation and was mesmerized: working on a book was always a time I delved into a world that could take me completely away from reality and made my whole being vibrant with thought and emotion; it was tiring but ultimately soul-rewarding.
Along with fiction, I have translated a number of non-fiction pieces from various areas: medicine, business, economics, and politics. There have been more smaller-in-size assignments of different nature I have completed. I have done annotating and editing work as well.
By joining the proz translators' site, I am determined to devote more time and energy to translation and focus on expanding my knowledge of different subjects and my translator's experience as a whole.
