Another Christmas in this hellhole of a war. The motorcar bounced in and out of holes
on a rural dirt road near Soissons, France. Major Peter Winslow gripped the steering
wheel as he made his way to the Vauxbuin Field Hospital nearby. It was snowing —
again. Back home in Canada, he enjoyed snowshoeing, skiing and ice skating. But here,
in the context of the war, snow was more an annoyance than anything.
Peter had joined the 38th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in Ottawa
the summer of last year when he had turned 22. At that time, he had already achieved two
post-secondary degrees from McGill University, one in French Literature and one in
German Literature. He had even developed an affinity for writing sonnets, in English,
though.
He remembered how exuberant he was to fight in the war overseas, especially when
his older brother, John, had joined the same battalion months previous.
Cheeky. Pompous. Overconfident. He and his fellow Canadian, Australian and
British soldiers had no idea what war entailed. And this war was worse than other wars if
one considered the modern weapons of gas and airplanes.

NEW YORK — The case of the minor 18th-century portraitist who became the first major English landscape painter and revolutionized the approach of European masters to nature is one of those mysteries at the heart of art history that may never be explained.
A small, tight-knit exhibition at Richard L. Feigen & Co. turns the spotlight on the story of Richard Wilson for the first time in the United States. “Richard Wilson and the British Arcadia” runs through June 25.
As in unresolved police investigations, we miss elements that may have been crucial in the story of the evolution of a Briton born sometime around 1713 in the Welsh town of Penegoes. Little is known about the youth of the artist, whose birthdate is undiscovered.
