Source text - English The translator must have an excellent, up-to-date knowledge of his source languages, full facility in the handling of his target language, which will be his mother tongue or language of habitual use, and a knowladge and understanding of the subject-matter in his fields of specialisation. This is, as it were, his professional equipment. In addition to this, it is desirable that he should have an enquiring mind, wide interest, a good memory and the ability to grasp quickly the basic principles of new developments. He should be willing to work on his own, often at high speeds, but should be humble enough to consult others should hin own knowledge not always prove adequate to the task in hand. He should be able to type fairly quickly and accurately and, if he is working mainly for publication, should have more than a nodding acquaintance with printing techniques and proof-reading. If he is working basically as an information translator, let us say, for an industrial firm, he should have the flexibility of mind to enable him to switch rapidly from one source language to another, as well as from one subject-matter to another, since this ability is frequently required of him in such work. Beating in mind the nature of the translator's work, i.e. the processing of the written word, it is, strictly speaking, unnecessary that he should be able to speak the languages he is dealing with. If he does speak them, it is an advantage rather than a hindrance, bur this skill is in many ways a approximate idea about the proninciation of his source languages, even if this is restricted to knowing how proper names and places names are pronouced. The same applies to knowing how proper names and places names are pronounced. The same applies to an ability to write his source languages. If he can, well good; if he cannot, it does not matter. There are many other skills and qualities that are desirable in a translator.
Translation - Russian Переводчик должен превосходно владеть актуальными знаниями о языке источника, полным пониманием его целевого языка, который может быть его родным или привычным использовании, а также знанием и пониманием предмета его специализации. Всё это в действительности является его профессиональным оборудованием. В дополнение к этому желательно иметь пытливый ум, широкий кругозор, хорошую память и способность быстро схватывать принципы новых разработок. Он должен быть готов работать самостоятельно, иногда в быстром темпе, но должен быть достаточно скромен чтобы консультироваться с другими в случае если его знания недостаточно достоверный в данной области. Он должен работать быстро и точно, так же в случае работы с публикациями должен быть на короткой ноге с технологией печати и редактурой. Если он работает как дословный переводчик, например, для промышленников, он должен иметь гибкий ум что бы быстро переключаться между различными языками оригиналов, так же хорошо, как между различными предметами перевода, так как такие качества часто требуются в данном роде работы. Обработка написанного, как природа работы переводчика, по сути не важна если требуется просто говорить на целевых языках. Однако если он говорит на них, то это не препятствие а хорошее преимущество, которым он может пользоваться. Тем не менее желательно, что бы что бы он имел прибили тельное представление о произношении языка оригинала, даже если это представление ограниченно произношением имен собственных и названиями мест. То же самое относится к письму языка оригинала. Хорошо если может, но, если нет, но не страшно. Есть много других навыков и черт, желательных для переводчика.
