Translation - English A Certain Senhor Elbling is not just a biography, though it does tell the story of an adventurous life lived to the full.
Nor is it just a book about business, though it does shed light on a complex entrepreneurial quest that stands out from the great works on other entrepreneurs.
FittingA Certain Senhor Elblinginto a specific category is no easy task as the pages are filled with references from history and elsewhere. The pogroms in his native Poland. Hitler’s encroaching army. The escape to Canada. Falling in love with engineering in Montreal. A short spell in the romantic Brazil of the 1950s where he used bombers to make it rain. The move to England to break the new ground opened up by the electronic revolution. The successful directorial career in Italy when Olivetti was looking to win the race for computer technology. The relocation to the USA and reconsideration of his communist sympathies, renouncing them once and for all in Cold War America.
Finally, the decision to trade in his life as a director for that of an entrepreneur, taking his wife and sons with him to start up a great business group in the tropics out of a…bathroom. Yes, a bathroom in the southern tip of Brazil of all places.
In the place best known for its gaucho cowboys, he developed international patents, manufactured missiles for the Brazilian army, produced the essential parts for satellites and - proving the doubting Brazilian bankers wrong - made Automated Teller Machines with much success.
Joseph Elbling lived in seven countries and, given the number of times he narrowly escaped death, you could say he lived seven lives. He took on board what his Russian-born, ardently communist mother had taught him when she threw him overboard into the water of the Bug River in Poland. Seeing him floundering, she said:
“Sink or swim, Joe!”
He swam and lived to tell the tale which now reaches this library.
