Japanese to English: The Shinano River Basin General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Archaeology
Translation - English The Shinano River, which runs a total of 367km from the south to the north of Niigata Prefecture, is Japan’s longest river. The people who chose to settle in that huge river basin over 13,000 years ago were the first to begin creating earthenware. Thus the Jomon Period began. Especially in the upper reaches of the river basin, the remains found from this period are dense compared to the rest of the country. In the Shinano River basin, a trove of diverse flora and fauna blessed with abundant forests and water, the Jomon people lived in uninterrupted harmony with nature for 10,000 years.
