Source text - English Think back to Pat Buchanan's 1992 convention diatribe. His list of objections to Bill Clinton comprised the latter's support for legal abortion, gay rights and women in combat, and his supposed use of a pro-choice litmus test for Supreme Court justices, "discrimination against religious schools" and draft-dodging. Mr Buchanan also fulminated against "the raw sewage of pornography that pollutes our popular culture" and the LA riots. His speech was the highlight of that convention. It energised the masses. Four years later Mr Buchanan was at it again. "They hear the shouts of the peasants from over the hill," he shouted at a rally in Nashua. "All the knights and barons will be riding into the castle pulling up the drawbridge in a minute. All the peasants are coming with pitchforks.
Today it is all culture war, all the time, but not in the way anyone envisioned there. It's not the issues that define culture war now; it's culture war that defines the issues. As Newt Gingrich spoke today at a rally in suburban Atlanta, supporters held up signs with a gas pump, and "$2.50/Newt" on it, a reference to Mr Gingrich's promise to reduce the price of gas to that level under his administration. And why are gas prices so high now? Because Mr Obama's "secretary of anti-energy", as Mr Gingrich called Steven Chu, wants us to pay European prices. Why? Well, it has something to do with Mr Obama bowing to Saudi kings and apologising for soldiers who burned Korans. Mr Gingrich's support of vigorous drilling for oil and gas was met with rousing cheers. And who knows: perhaps we ought to allow more drilling for oil and gas. Perhaps it really is worth the environmental costs.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks to you for your very active participation in our recent conference in Montreal on the "future of aviation". The Chairman and Board Members have also asked me to pass on their sincere appreciation for your efforts in supporting the Institute in this important undertaking.
Your skill in chairing the controversial panel on "The Role of Developing Countries in the Future of Aviation Management" was very much appreciated by those representing all sides of that extremely sensitive topic. As well, we have received numerous post-conference requests for the paper you delivered on "The Critical Issue of Cooperation Between Airlines and Airports." It appears that you may have penned a best-seller with that one!
On both a professional and a personal level, I really appreciated the time that the two of us were able to spend together for fun and reflection during conference down times. I certainly learned a lot about the unique aspects of aviation operations in your part of the world (not to mention the things you taught me about the backhand on the squash court!).We are currently hard at work producing the "Compendium of Conference Proceedings" document, and we expect to be sending it out to all participants early in the new year.
Again, thanks so much for your enthusiastic participation in our conference. I have no doubt that it would not have been the success that it was without your presence. Please keep in touch, and drop in and visit us whenever you are in this part of the world.
