Source text - English The arrival of the Portuguese in West Africa in c.1460 initiated a period of cooperation with the oba (King) of the Edo Kingdom of south-west Nigeria. The Portuguese brought with them large quantities of brass and cooper bracelets, coral beads and red cloth. The technique of "lost-wax" casting was already established in the lower Niger region and artists must been very excited by the new supplies of brass. Although there is no direct evidence of what happened to these bracelets, there was a huge expansion in the art of brass casting and the emergence of a new form-the rectangular plaque. Between 1500 and 1700 several hundred plaques were cast, exclusively for the royal palace in Benin City. Portuguese soldiers assisted the king in his battles, and plaques depicting battles, court ceremonies, and other events often featured the Portuguese. Dating from around 1500, this plaque in one of the earliest made. It shows a group of Portuguese soldiers in the forest seeking to capture leopards for the royal menagerie. The scene is presented as if seen from above and all the figures are twisting in movement. It is cast il low relief and the layout of imagery seem experimental, as if the artist was trying to interpret the unfamilar two-dimensional form of book plate within the three-dimensional tradition of Benin art. The presentation of vegetation was uncommon in Africa art until the 20th centuary, and the artist may have been shown botanical plates in European books.
