Source text - English Introduction: The Concept of -(♀♂)
Melanie Klein’s (1946) concept of projective identification referred to the idea that the infant projects unwanted parts of the self into the mother in order to unburden its psyche. However, Klein did not attend to the effect this projection has upon the mother and it was Bion who later (1962) explored the role of the mother in making more palatable what the baby had projected into her. This was achieved by her acting as a 'container' of the baby’s projection, the 'contained,' and through her activity of 'reverie' the mother helped her child bear emotions it could not manage on its own. Bion (1962) represented the container by the symbol “♀” and used the symbol “♂” to denote the contained. The relationship of container/contained was represented by the sign “♀♂” (Bion, 1962). The sign “♀♂” may represent various psychological phenomena: the mother’s capacity for reverie, the child’s ability to assimilate thinking functions within himself (the apparatus for thinking), thinking containing thoughts and thoughts containing thinking, words containing things, mind containing body, the relationship between the group and the individual and so on.
In his first formulations, Bion proposed three possible manifestations of ♀♂. The first, called “commensal,” denotes a situation of latent cohabitation between container and contained, with very little mutual interaction. The second, called “parasitic,” describes an interaction diametrically opposed to the first, in which the ♀ threatens to destroy ♂ or vice versa. The third variation, called “symbiotic” (in the biological sense), represents a benign and evolutionary development in which ♀ and ♂ couple, interact, nourish each other and develop with mutual benefit that fosters the growth of symbolic thinking. In this paper, I will talk about what I consider a fourth possibility, briefly mentioned in only a few lines of 'Learning from Experience,' designated by Bion as -(♀♂) (Bion, 1962). I call this manifestation “inverted.”
Translation - Korean

Source text - English A [00:00] Oh, how was my first concert in Korea? Oh, it was really fun to play in Korea. And we were shocked at the warm welcome from the response. Actually, some guys in the band even started to cry. They were so moved by the reception and the clapping and everybody. It was really powerful.
A [00:23] So the second, number two, was the variety of instruments and in selecting what criteria guide my decisions. Well, you know, in my head, I'm hearing instrumental color. And so I'm just trying to approximate that color in terms of sound. Sometimes the decision is because whether if the lines are going really high, you have to go into soprano sax, clarinet, flute, something, you know. If they're low, you only have certain possibilities, you know, the bass clarinet, the baritone sax, low tenors.
A [01:07] So sometimes it's just a matter of practicality, but most times it's a matter of color, you know, that I just—I'm thinking about color. So, so what I can say is sometimes it's a practical decision. Yeah, sometimes it's practical, but most times I'm hearing color, and I hear a melody as a flute, as a clarinet, or a woodwind combined with another instrument. So most times it's about color.
A [01:42] So, so then in number three, she's asking if I'm intentionally trying to break free from conventions to create my own sound. Or are these voicings based on... It's—my voicings aren't based on any theoretical framework. They're not. No, the answer is no. It's just no.
A [02:08] But, but I'm looking, again, it's a matter of color, you know, different—you, you take—you can take three notes, a B, a C, and a G, you know, and where you place those in terms of octaves and relationships changes the color and the meaning.
A [02:30] Let me come up with another way to say it. I'm looking for a color in the sound. You know, not just instrument color, but the color of the harmony. And sometimes lines, different lines, then create the structure. Where the lines are going can create the structure sometimes.
Q [03:00] You mean different lines within the harmony?
A [03:03] If you have different people playing different melodic lines and they're all playing in a melodic fashion, sometimes it creates a harmony. I'm not always just writing a vertical harmony. And like the interval of the minor ninth, you know, many people say, oh, you're in big band writing, you shouldn't write that. But that tension can be a really beautiful thing if you create beautiful voice leading.

Introduction
Freud's discovery of the meaning of dreams continues to stand as a Landmark in the evolution of psychoanalysis and to occupy a fundamental position in its episteme, but it was Bion more than any other who seems to have grabbed Freud's baton and run with it with extraordinary imaginative creativity. His extension of Freud's theory of dreaming constitutes one of the more significant paradigm changes that have taken place in psychoanalytic thinking, but his postulates about it are still not widely known nor appreciated. It was only recently that some authors have addressed his ideas on dreaming. They include Grotstein (2000, 2002), Ogden (2001, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008), Brown 2006), and Burka et al. (2007). Bion's thinking about dreaming had been quietly germinating in his earlier works (Bion, 1953, 1962, 1963. 1965, 1967, and 1970) and emerged from his observations of psychotic patients, noting that they hallucinate (project) rather than dream (introject) their experiences (Bion, 1970, p. 16) and therefore cannot "learn from their emotional experiences.” From this background he formulated the concept of alpha-function (Bion, 1962, p. 3) and implicated it as the instrument (model) that works on processing emotional experiences during sleep and waking life by producing alpha-elements which can be used for generating dream images for dream thoughts (p. 6) so as to render the emotional experiences personally meaningful, Insofar as dreaming is an agent of our personal subjectivity, it affects our uniqueness, our personal ways of looking at things, our subjectivity to the otherness of the object to appreciate its value and anticipate it and defuse its potential danger. Looked at in another way, it constitutes "transference” in its broadest sense.
Background
Bion's (1992) major work on dreaming was written in his private notebook, Cogitations. The concept of dream-work-alpha' first saw the light of day in Bion's imaginative thinking in Cogitations in 1959 (p. 42) and ended, undated (on p. 253), certainly before 1968―but it appears nowhere else in his formal publications during his lifetime. He was later to separate dreaming (no longer using "dream-work”) from alpha-function presumably because the former constituted a theory as well as an actual in vivo process, whereas the latter constituted an analogue model, a virtual function; thus, the two seemed to belong to different categories (Bion, 1992, p. 186; Sandler, 2005, pp. 231-56, and personal communication, 2007a). An intimate connection between dream-work, alpha- function, container↔contained, and the "contact-barrier," however, was implicit in his works from early on. Even though Bion did not neatly distinguish between dreaming and alpha-function after he stopped using "dream-work-alpha,” he did once casually allude to a connection: "the alpha-function of dream-work" (Bion, 1992, p. 177). Thus, Bion tends to treat "dreaming“ and “alpha-function" as being either identical, overlapping, and/or the latter's being a component of the former. In what follows, I shall continue Bion's lead in using "dreaming" and "alpha-function" as virtually interchangeable as well as complementary processes.
Bion's re-interpretation, reworking, and extension of Freud's postulates are of such range that I shall cite selected samples of them and then discuss them after first presenting the briefest epitome of Freud's theory of dreaming that is relevant to Bion's modifications. Further, I shall not present dream material because this contribution, like Bion’s work, focuses strictly on dreaming itself.

Source text - English Melanie Klein - ON OBSERVING THE BEHAVIOUR OF YOUNG INFANTS (1952)
I
The theoretical conclusions presented in the previous chapter are derived from psycho-analytic work with young children. We should expect such conclusions to be substantiated by observations of infants' behaviour during the first year of life. This corroborative evidence, however, has its limitations, for, as we know unconscious processes are only partly revealed in behaviour, whether of infants or adults. Keeping this reservation in mind, we are able to gain some confirmation of psycho-analytic findings in our study of babies.
Many details of infants' behaviour which formerly escaped attention or remained enigmatic, have become more understandable and significant through our increased knowledge of early unconscious processes; in other words, our faculty for observation in this particular field has been sharpened. We are, no doubt, hampered in our study of young infants by their inability to talk, but there are many details of early emotional development which we can gather by means other than language. If we are to understand the young infant, though, we need not only greater knowledge but also a full sympathy with him, based on our unconscious being in close touch with his unconscious.
Translation - Korean
I
