Source text - English Albania is a microcosm of every nation’s attempts at statehood. Some regimes last a year, others a generations. This nation, in the last century, saw the rise and fall of colonialism, capitalism, monarchism, fascism, communism and democracy.
After the end of World War 2, Enver Hoxha and his partisans took over. Facing the problems of a war torn nation seemed impossible but, through an oppressive regime, Hoxha revolutionized the country. The nation stabilized and the new government began providing the basic necessities people needed to live. Industry blossomed and food, healthcare and shelter were treated as guarantees. A justice system was put in place to lower criminality. Education became a universal right, in 4 years literacy in Albania went from 15% to 70%.
To this day, nearly half the country speaks positively of the legacy of their former dictator. Mostly due to his ability to breathe new life into a nation that was left for dead but being alive isn’t enough.
After ruling for nearly half a century, Stalinist dictator Enver Hoxha dies in 1985, what followed was a cascade of corruption and political incompetence that culminated with the collapse of communist rule in the country and all over Eastern Europe. This Balkan State was victim of a tremendous political turmoil during the 90’s.

Após o fim da Segunda Guerra Mundial, Enver Hoxha e seus partidários assumiram o poder. Enfrentar os problemas de uma nação devastada pela guerra parecia impossível, mas, através de um regime opressivo, Hoxha revolucionou o país. A nação estabilizou-se e o novo governo começou a fornecer as necessidades básicas que as pessoas precisavam para viver. A indústria floresceu e comida, saúde e abrigo foram tratados como garantias. Um sistema de justiça foi posto em prática para reduzir a criminalidade. A educação tornou-se um direito universal, em 4 anos a alfabetização na Albânia passou de 15% para 70%.
Até hoje, quase metade do país fala positivamente do legado do seu prévio ditador. Principalmente devido à sua capacidade de dar nova vida a uma nação que foi deixada para morrer, mas estar viva não é suficiente.
Depois de governar por quase meio século, o ditador estalinista Enver Hoxha morre em 1985, o que se seguiu foi uma cascata de corrupção e incompetência política que culminou com o colapso do regime comunista no país e em toda a Europa Oriental. Este Estado dos Balcãs foi vítima de uma tremenda agitação política durante os anos 90.
