Source text - English There is little doubt that forest succession would be modified in many parts of the world, probably more so in the Northern forest than in mid-latitudes. The probable rate of succession is very uncertain, however, and the time scale is more likely to be centuries rather than decades.
Of course, this process is or could be speeded up in planted or/and managed forests. About the only long-ranged action that the forester can take is in the selection of the trees to plant or favour at the start of the rotation. In other respects, his actions are much like those of the farmer, albeit spread over the life of the stand: fertilizing, thinning, pruning, pest control and ultimate harvesting.
