Translation - English Over the last few months, India has suffered an unprecedented heatwave and drought. For the 1.3 billion inhabitants of this country, water is a key issue, and solutions to alleviate growing water scarcity have been sought for a long time: the last report from the IPCC shows that water shortages will affect 40% of the country’s population by 2050.
From the 1960s onwards, in the wake of the famous green revolution, the second most populated country on the planet embarked on an innovative policy of underground irrigation, which it must now rethink.
After the food crisis of the 1950s and 1960s, food self-sufficiency became central to India’s agricultural policies. The modernisation of agricultural techniques and the use of inputs, such as fertilisers, pesticides and irrigation, resulted in increased productivity and spearheaded a green revolution, that allowed Indian agriculture to meet the country’s exploding demand in food.
