Source text - French Le Lâche et la Baleine
(Une Fable pour les faibles)
La méchante tempête a détruit le bateau ;
J’avais peur de la mer, les poissons et la mort.
Une baleine est arrivée pour un morceau,
Elle ouvrait sa bouche et je traversais la porte!
En attendant dans la panse de la baleine,
Je pense à mes actions et aussi mes regrets ;
J’avais toujours plein de peur de mes grands secrets
Poltronnerie ! Le péché des faibles humains !
L’aventure m’appelle et je suis en enfer ;
Vraiment ? Je détermine le cours de ma vie ?
J’aimerais être un héros ! Je le choisis !
Mon Dieu, la baleine m’a vomi sur les vagues ;
La naissance étrange, ce n’est pas une blague.
Je me souviendrai toujours de ce moment,
Quand j’ai perdu mes peurs assez péniblement !
Vous restez aussi dans la panse de la bête ;
Restez-vous-là ? Avec votre vie à l’arrêt ?
Soyez un héros ! Choisissez votre destin !
Ou restez dans la baleine, toujours, sans fin.
Translation - English The Coward and The Whale
A Fable for the Feeble
The evil storm destroyed the boat ;
I was afraid of the sea, the fish and of death.
A whale arrived for a bite,
She opened her mouth and I walked through the door!
While waiting in the belly of the whale,
I think of my actions and also my regrets ;
I was always full of fear with my grand secrets,
Cowardice ! The sin of all weak humans !
Adventure calls to me and I’m in hell ;
I accept in spite of it, but I’m a coward !
I’m not a hero, I’m afraid of the task!
I touched the depths, all alone under the sea.
In my darkness, in silence I think.
With obstinance I examine my choice :
I can be either a coward or a hero, ha ! It’s up to me!
I have the power to change my existence !
Really ? I determine the course of my life ?
I would like to be a hero That’s what I choose !
My God, the whale vomited me up on the waves ;
A strange birth, that’s not a joke.
I will remember forever, that moment then ;
What I lost my fears at great pains !
You stay as well in the belly of the beast ;
Will you stay there ? With your life under arrest ?
Be a hero ! Choose your destiny !
Or stay in the whale, forever, without end.
