In the quiet of her Brooklyn studio, artist Tau Lewis and her team bring an uncommon attentiveness and care to the found fabrics that make up her figurative sculptures. “I have a very deep interior private life," she tells us, "I’ve been that way since I was a child. I really struggled with communicating and getting my ideas out. Sculpture has been really important to that interior self.” Ornate assemblages of salvaged textiles, the works currently in progress are inspired by ceremonial Yoruba masks that are traditionally used in the process of communicating with a spirit or ancestor. This documentary short, shot on 16-millimeter film, evocatively captures the creation of a suite of large-scale masks that radiate their own personalities and desires.
Patching together the many fabrics collected in her studio, Lewis embraces the histories embedded in the materials she works with. "A lot of black creation is an upcycling" she says, "regardless of a lack thereof, regardless of an access to. Taking things as they are and letting them shine". For the artist, the time spent in the studio touching and handling the material is integral to the work, an act of departure into her own interior world. She treats her sculptures as beings in their own right, unrecognized ancestors whose allegorical meaning or talismanic power must be teased out through a hands-on process of recognition. "I've heard you," she offers to the work, "and these are the symbols I've made in response to you, and you are being seen."

En la quietud de su estudio de Brooklyn, la artista Tau Lewis y su equipo brindan una atención y cuidados únicos a las telas que componen sus esculturas figurativas. Lewis nos cuenta: «Tengo una vida privada muy íntima. Soy así desde pequeña. Me costaba hablar, era una niña reservada. También me costaba comunicarme y mostrar mis ideas. La escultura siempre ha sido muy importante a nivel personal». Las obras en las que trabaja actualmente están compuestas por ensamblajes de ornamentos de telas recicladas. Las máscaras ceremoniales yoruba que se utilizaban tradicionalmente para contactar con un espíritu o un ancestro son su fuente de inspiración. Este corto documental, filmado con una película de 16 milímetros, captura de manera evocadora la creación de una amplia serie de máscaras que transmiten sus personalidades y deseos propios.
Uniendo todas las telas que recoge en su estudio, Lewis recibe con los brazos abiertos las historias que albergan sus obras. «Muchos artistas negros reutilizan materiales de forma creativa, sin importar la falta de estos, sin importar que tengan acceso a estos. Yo cojo las cosas como son y dejo que brillen». Para la artista, el tiempo que pasa en el estudio tocando y manipulando las telas es fundamental para su trabajo, es una llave para acceder a su mundo interior. Trata sus esculturas como seres en pleno derecho, ancestros desconocidos cuyo significado alegórico y magia talismánica se debe desentrañar a través de procesos prácticos de reconocimiento. Quiere demostrar a sus propias obras que las escucha, que esos son los símbolos que ha hecho para ellas como respuesta y que no son invisibles.

Hello! Thank you for stopping by. My name is Paula and I'm an English and Catalan into Spanish translator and proofreader based in Valencia, Spain.
I have a BA in Translation and Interlinguistic Mediation from the University of Valencia and a MA in Audiovisual Translation: Localization, Subtitling and Dubbing from ISTRAD. In addition, I have done several extracurricular courses on different areas such as digital marketing, cinematography, and activism.
I'm professionally trained in the use of subtitling software (Subtitle Edit, Subtitle Workshop, Aegisub...) and CAT tools (MemoQ, Wordfast Pro, Memsource...). Furthermore, I also work with Adobe Premiere Pro for burning-in subtitles and basic video editing.
My main areas of interest are cinema, education (including e-learning), journalism, digital marketing, hair and beauty care, art and culture, human rights, stories about Africa and its diaspora, and Europe-Africa relations.
