Source text - English Film review – The Concert (2009)
Anne-Marie Jacquet (Mélanie Laurent)
This French made film is part farce, part Blues Brothers style putting-the-bandback-
together film and part heist-type film. At the centre of The Concert is Andreï
Filipov (Aleksei Guskov) a once acclaimed Russian orchestra conductor whose
career was destroyed 30 years ago during the USSR’s Brezhnev era. Now reduced to
working as a janitor, Andreï gets a shot at conducting again when he comes up with
a scheme to reunite with his old musician friends and then travel to Paris with them
in order to impersonate the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra. Andreï’s plan also includes
convincing the acclaimed French violinist Anne-Marie Jacquet (Mélanie Laurent
from Inglourious Basterds) to play with his impostor orchestra for deeply personal
reasons.
For the most part The Concert is a fun comedy/drama where even its stories of anti-
Semitic persecution and lives torn apart under Soviet rule are treated somewhat
lightly. For most of its running time the humour oscillates between poignant
commentary, wicked satire and absurdism. While The Concert doesn’t have the
same savage bite of Billy Wilders 1961 Berlin-set One, Two, Three (where both
capitalism and communism are equally mocked) it does enjoy putting the boot into
characters such as former KGB man Ivan Gavrilov (Valeri Barinov) who cling onto a
highly idealised view of what life was like under communist rule.
The Concert does slump in the middle when Andreï and his mostly dislikeable troop
of musicians descend on Paris. Their generally drunk, wild and money-obsessed
behaviour makes them more obnoxious (and a little stereotyped) rather than
amusing. However, the film picks up considerably when Mélanie Laurent’s Anne-
Marie character becomes more active in the film. Laurent may not actually have that
much screen time but when she is on screen she uses that time to its full potential.
At its ending, any previous faults are completely redeemed.
As the film’s title obviously states, there is a concert as the centrepiece of this film
and it is one of those moments of sheer cinematic exuberance. Throughout the film
Andreï speaks of his quest to achieve “ultimate harmony” and the prolonged final
sequence in The Concert does exactly that. It can be tricky evaluating the overall
worth of a film based on the one moment that the rest of film subserviently is
building up to but the conclusion in The Concert is just sublime. The combination of
music and incredibly moving acting with the heartbreaking flashbacks and the
joyous flashforwards somehow wraps up every aspect of the film in a way that is
completely satisfying. By doing so The Concert delivers one of cinema’s most
moving and satisfying emotional payoffs in years, transforming a film that is pretty
good into a film of true greatness.

En esta producción cinematográfica francesa se combinan la farsa, la alegoría a un estilo de película como los Blue Brothers que recupera de nuevo a los músicos de su banda y el estilo de las películas de atracos. Al mando de El Concierto está Andrei Filipov (Aleksei Guskov) que fue un aclamado director de orquesta ruso cuya carrera fue arruinada 30 años atrás durante la era soviética de Brezhnev. Ahora, degradado a trabajar como conserje, Andrei tiene una iluminación para recuperar y volver a dirigir su banda de música e idea un plan para reunirse de nuevo con sus antiguos amigos músicos, viajar con ellos a París y hacerse pasar por la Orquesta del Teatro Bolshoi de Rusia. El plan de Andrei incluye también a la violinista francesa Anne-Marie Jacquet, (Melanie Laurent en Inglorious Basterds) a la que por profundas razones personales, quiere convencer para tocar en su impostora orquesta.
La mayor parte de El Concierto es una divertida comedia y drama a la vez en la que hasta las historias de persecución antisemita y vidas rotas bajo las normas soviéticas son tratadas de manera superflua. El humor de la película oscila entre comentarios conmovedores, sátira malvada y absurdismo. El Concierto no tiene ese toque salvaje de Un, dos, tres Bienvenidos a Berlín de Billy Wilder de 1961 (donde el capitalismo y el comunismo son satirizados), simplemente ameniza ridiculizando a sus personajes, como el antiguo hombre de la KGB Ivan Gavrilov (Valeri Barinov) quien se aferraba a un punto de vista muy idealizado de cómo era la vida bajo las leyes comunistas.
El Concierto cae en picado a la mitad de la película cuando Andrei y su tropa de músicos, la mayoría de ellos hombres desagradables, viajan a París. Su comportamiento, normalmente ebrio, salvaje y obsesionado por el dinero, les convierte en personajes más detestables (un poco estereotipados) que divertidos. Sin embargo, la película escoge cuidadosamente el momento en el que el personaje de Melanie Laurent, Anne-Marie, tiene una intervención más activa. Quizá Laurent no tenga un papel demasiado visible en la película pero cuando aparece en escena hace uso de su gran potencial. Hacia el final, cualquier parte defectuosa de esta producción queda totalmente redimida.
Como su título claramente indica, todo gira alrededor de un concierto y cuando éste tiene lugar, es, precisamente, uno de esos momentos cinematográficos donde reina la auténtica exuberancia. Andrei, habla a lo largo de toda la película de su misión, “la última armonía”, y, efectivamente la lleva a cabo en la larga escena final de El Concierto. Puede ser engañoso valorar todo lo que una producción cinematográfica ofrece únicamente por uno de sus momentos, que en este caso, el resto de la cinta ha ido construyendo para conseguir ese resultado sublime que nos brinda El Concierto. La combinación de la música y el increíble movimiento actoral tanto en sus escenas retrospectivas como en sus divertidas secuencias anticipadas culminan cada aspecto de la película de una forma completamente gratificante. Por todo ello El Concierto nos regala una de las mejores y más satisfactorias recompensas emocionales del cine en años, transformando lo que es una película bastante buena en una de verdadera grandeza.
