Source text - Hungarian Lefelé hajlott a nap. Búcsúzóul betekintett még az erdőbe, hol hosszúra nyúlt az árnyék, és
a szelíd szemű gerlék halkan kurrogtak. Vörös fényben úszott a fák dereka; hazafelé
zümmögtek a méhek, és csengő madárdal fuvolázott ezer hangon.
Aztán halkult az ének, és amikor túl a dombon üszkös felhőhamu maradt az égő fény
helyén, már csak a feketerigó nótázott tavaszos jókedvvel, de hát ő megrögzött korhely volt,
aki nem törődött az erdő véleményével.
Ekkor már meleg párákat lehelt a föld, és a virágos fák illatos üzeneteket küldtek
egymásnak apró szélgyerekekkel, kik valamelyik böjti viharból szakadtak itt, és jól érezték
magukat a virágzó cseresznyefák koronájában.
A völgyben – hol egy tó nyújtózkodott – mind hangosabban szóltak a békák, rekedten
kiabáltak a gémek, akik az alvóhelyért veszekedtek, és sziszegő szárnyakkal szálltak a
vadkacsák.
Zümmögve-dongva szálltak nagy esti bogarak, és nyomukban árnyként szürke denevérek.
A feketerigó is álomra készülődött. Fuvolája halkan szólt már, tétován, és szerte a
fészkekben az énekesek éppen szemüket akarták lehunyni, amikor felsikoltott a rigó hangja
vészesen, szaggatottan, és meglapult minden élet a fészkek árnyán. A nagy csendbe csattogva
vágott bele a rigó izgatott kiabálása, és az egyik bokor alól kiballagott Kag, aki réme volt a
környéknek.
Szemei zöldben égtek, és látszólag nem törődött a rigóval, kinek hangja úgy szállt utána,
mint az átok. Lassan futásba kezdett, és a rigó nem szállt utána. Csend lett az erdőn és ezüstös
homály, mert a hold már felszállt a völgyből, hol köd volt és sötétség.
Kag meglapult a bokor tövén.
– Megállj, füstös! Nem sokáig zavarod a vadászatomat! Csak ne lenne annyi gondom a
fiatalokkal, majd elrontanám a fütyülődet…
Felemelte orrát, mely nedves volt, és úgy megfogta a szálló szagokat, mint a lépvessző a
madarat. “Iny jön – mondta magában. – Nem győzött már várni. Türelmetlen az ilyen
asszony. Mintha minden bokorban ott lógna a pecsenye…”
Árnyék vált el az árnyéktól. Kag elengedte maga előtt asszonyát, aki bizony nem volt már
az a kívánatos rókamenyecske, mint februárban, amikor szikrázott a hó, és Kag fél tucat
rókalovagot mart véresre Inyért, aki aztán hűségesen követte a tóparti rókavárba…
Nagy volt a szerelem, bőséges a szaporaság. És most nagy a gond. Iny lesoványodott, szép
bozontos szőrét elhullatta, és türelmetlen volt, ha Kag késett az ennivalóval.
– Iny – szólt utána Kag –, itt vagyok…
– Hol csavarogsz? Hol az élelem? – és Iny megmutatta fogait.
Kag türelmes volt. Jó férj. Nem kis dolog annyi fiat nevelni!
– Ne mérgelődj, Iny. Megvan, de már nem bírtam el, és a füstös is kiabált rám…
Elrejtettem. Menj a nyomon, és hozd el. Én majd vigyázok.
Iny földre tartott orral szaladt Kag meleg nyomán. Valami fehérség villant ki a homályból.
Iny gyanakodva megállt, de mozdult a szél, és a legjobb illat tapadt orrához, amit csak
kívánni lehetett.
Felemelte a nehéz ludat, és lassan kocogott vissza a párjához.
– Ne haragudj, Kag, valami bánt mindig, azért vagyok ilyen harapós. Sok a gond a
fiatalokkal – szólt, mikor a ludat letette.
– Nem szabad mindig mérgelődni – mondta Kag –, tudhatod, hogy minden gondom ti
vagytok. Nehezen fértem a libához. Őrzik őket. Lármát sem akartam. Várni kellett. Ez az egy
került a közelembe, de mondhatom, meg se nyikkant…
Iny fáradtan, de szeretettel feküdt ura mellé. – Kicsit pihenünk, aztán visszük.
– Nem – felelte Kag –, egyél belőle jócskán. Az a bajod, hogy üresség van a
gyomrodban… Én is szeretem a fiatalokat, de azért elpusztulni nem kell értük.
– Sokan vannak, Kag… nem lesz elég…
– Egyél, Iny, ha hazavittük, én még fordulok egyet. Akár kettőt is, de enned kell, mert már
csak a csontjaid vannak.
Iny magához rántotta a libát, és elharapta nyakát tőből, mintha késsel vágták volna el.
Aztán csak a csontok roppantak néha. Mikor a fejéhez ért, Kag megszólalt:
– Ne rontsd a fogad. Kemény a Gege feje nagyon.
Iny aztán ura unszolására megevett még két combot és egy szárnyat.
Kag hozzá sem nyúlt a pecsenyéhez.
– Ráérek még – mondta –, két Csusszal találkoztam… nem vagyok éhes.
Csusz a gyíkok nemzetségéhez tartozott, kik homokos helyeken sütkéreznek, és Kag
belőlük ebédelt. Nem nagy falat, nem is a legjobb, de az éhes róka nem válogatós.
Kag felkapta a libát. – Menjünk!
S a két árny elindult a tóparti rókavár felé. Nehéz volt a liba, Kag letette.
– Vigyem? – csúszott mellé Iny.
Kag nem felelt. Fülei valami halk neszt fogtak fel. Megálltak mereven. A nesz elhallgatott.
Kag egy kis kört szaladt földre tartott orral. Egy helyen megállt, és elnevette magát.
– Unka van itt. Akarod, Iny?
Unka a békák családjából való volt, és most remegve húzta magát a fű közé, amint Kag
szemének zöld lámpása kigyúlt felette.
– Jóllaktam, Kag. Menjünk.
Kag felkapta a békát, s mire az a brekegéshez ért volna, Kag már nyelte is lefelé.
Iny elindult. Most ő járt elöl. A rókavár közelében meglapultak, mert az volt a törvény a
rókák között: “Úgy menj saját váradba is, mintha másé lenne…” Csend volt. A hold álmosan
járt felettük. A tó vizében csobbant néha valami, ami lehetett hal, de lehetett Lutra is, a vidra,
ki ilyenkor vadászott.
A lassan mozgó szél tiszta erdei szagokat hozott. Iny besurrant az öreg rókavárba,
melynek bejáratát apró bokrok fogták körül, dombján pedig egy óriási tölgy állott, melynek
gyökerei szinte markukban tartották a kis homokhalmot.
Régi rókatanya volt. Nem a legjobb, mert folyt benne mindig a homok – ami a fiatalok
szemét rontja –, de könnyű munka volt a kitatarozása, és körülötte játék volt az
élelemszerzés.
Kag a bejáratnál letette a ludat, Iny pedig húzta befelé. A nagy liba egészen megtöltötte a
lyukat, de azért haladt. Kag a nyomában prüszkölve hasalt, mert a homok az orrára hullott.
– Csendesen, Kag – suttogott a felesége –, alusznak…
A keskeny folyosó tágabb lett, és a pitvaron túl, mint egy teknő, öblösödött a kamra, hol
egy fekete halomban halkan szuszogott a nyolc rókakölyök.
Iny körülszaglászta őket.
– Hát nem gyönyörűek? Nézd, Kag!
Kag felült a kis barlangban, és vakaródzott, mert tudni való, hogy a rókákban temérdek a
bolha.
– Erős, fogas rókák lesznek. Meglátszik, hogy jó anyjuk van…
Iny elérzékenyedett.
– Melletted, Kag, könnyű jó anyának lenni. De nézd… nézd…
A szőrös gombolyag mozogni kezdett. Egy kis orr kutatva emelkedett a levegőbe, és bár
szemei még alig nyíltak ki, átgázolva a többieken – akik vinnyogni kezdtek –, odamászott a
liba véres nyakához, s rágni kezdte.
Kag szemei büszkén csillogtak.
– Ez ér a legtöbbet. Öregapja vére van benne, ki első volt a nemzetségben. Vuk lesz a
neve, mint az öregapjának – mondta. – Vuk, ami annyit jelent, hogy minden rókának félre
kell állni az útból, ha vadászatra indul. Segíts neki, Iny!
Translation - English The sun leaned downward. In farewell, he looked into the woods, where the shadow reached with length, and the gentle-eyed gerbils hummed softly. In red light the trees’ waists swam; on the way home the bees buzzed, and in a thousand voices played a ringing bell.
Then, the singing died down, and when the festering ash cloud was beyond the hill, the burning light remained. In place, only the blackbird sang with a spring joy, but he was of a lazy, stiff age, and did not care for the forest’s opinion.
At this time the ground was already breathing a warm haze, and the floral trees sent each other fragrant messages with fine wind children, some of which were torn apart by a swift storm here, and felt well in the blooming cherry tree’s crown.
In the valley – where a lake stretched – all the frogs called out louder, the herons shouted hoarsely, who fought for the place to sleep in, and with strident wings the ducks flew away.
Large night beetles were buzzing and rumbling, and as a shadow in their wake; gray bats. The blackbird also prepared for sleep. His flute had already called softly, hesistantly, and within all the nests the singers wanted only to close their eyes, when the thrush’s voice called out dangerously, intermittently, and all life lurked in the shadow of the nests. Into the great silence, clicking, carved into it the thrushs excited cry, and from under one of the bushes sauntered Kag, who was a menace to the countryside.
His eyes in green burned, and at first sight didnt care about the thrush, whose voice called out afterwards, like a curse. Slowly he broke into a run, and the thrush didn’t follow after him. There was silence and a silvery gloom in the forest, for the moon had already ascended from the valley, where there was fog and darkness. Kag crouched at the bush’s base.
-Stop, smoky! You won’t disturb my hunt for long! If only I wouldn’t have just as much trouble with youngsters, then I would spoil your singing. . .
He lifted his nose, which was wet, and as such grasped the loose odors like a bird clutches to a tree branch with it’s feet. “Iny is coming – he said to himself. – He couldn’t bear to wait any longer. Such a woman is impatient. As if in every bush there the joint would hang there. . .”
Shadow separates from shadow. Kag let go of his wife, who certain was not already the desirable little fox, as in February, when the snow sparkled, and Kag rendered half a dozen fox knights bloody for Iny, who faithfully followed him to the lakeside fox castle. . .
There was great love, and plentiful was the prolificacy. And now the big concern. Iny’s lean, pretty, bushy fur died away, and she was impatient, if Kag was late with the food.
-Iny –Kag called out afterward -, I am here. . .
-Where are you prowling about? Where is my meal? –and Iny bore her teeth.
Kag was patient. A good husband. It is no small thing to raise so many sons!
-Don’t be upset, Iny. I got it, but I couldn’t bear it any longer, and the smoky one shouted at me. . .
I híd it. Go on the trail, and bring it. Then I’ll be on the lookout.
Iny, with her nose held to the ground ran along Kag’s warm trail. Some sort of pure white flashed out of the shade. With suspicion Iny stopped, but the wind stirred, and the best scent held to her nose, the only possible one.
She picked up the heavy goose, and slowly jogged back to her husband.
-Don’t get angry, Kag, something is always wrong, and that’s why I’m so snappy. There are many problems with the youngsters – she said as she put the goose down.
-You shouldn’t always fret – said Kag -, you can know, that all my problems are yours. I had difficulty with the goose. They’re guarded. I didn’t want a ruckus either. We needed to wait. This is the one that came near me, but I can say it didn’t squeak. . .
Iny wearily, but lovingly lied down beside her husband. –we’ll rest a bit, then we’ll take it.
-No – answered Kag -, eat plenty of it. Your problem, is that there’s emptiness in your stomach. . . I love youngsters too, but you don’t have to perish for them.
-There are many, Kag. . . it won’t be enough. . .
-Eat, Iny, if we take you home, I’ll turn once more. You could have two, but you need to eat, because you have only bones.
Iny hitched the goose to herself and snapped off its root, as if they would have cut her with a knife. Then, the bones cracked only sometimes. When he caught up to his head, Kag started to speak:
-Don’t worsen your dent. Gege’s head is very firm.
Iny then ate two more legs and one wing per her husband’s suggestion.
Kag did not touch her steak.
-There’s plenty of time – she said -, I’ve met two Csuszes. . . I’m not hungry.
Csusz belonged to a line of lizards, who basked in sandy places, and Kag ate lunch from them. Not a big bite, and not the best bite either, but the hungry fox wasn’t too picky.
Kag picked up the goose. –Let’s go!
And the two shadows set out towards the lakside fox castle. The goose was heavy, and Kag put it down.
-Should I take it? –Iny slid in beside him.
Kag didn’t respond. His ears caught a soft sound. They stopped stiffly. The sound fell silent. Kag, with his nose held to the ground, ran in a little circle. He stopped in one place, and laughed to himself.
-Unka is here. Do you want to, Iny?
Unka was from a true family of frogs, and now dragged himself, shaking, amid the grass, as the green light in Kag’s eyes lit up above him.
-I was full, Kag. Let’s go.
Kag picked up the frog, and in the time its croak would have reached him, Kag had already swallowed it down.
Iny left. Now she was in front. They crouched near the fox castle, because the law among the foxes was: “Go to your own castle, as if it wasn’t. . .” It was silent. The moon sleepily moved above them. Sometimes something splashed into the water of the lake, which could have been a fish, or Lutra the otter as well, who hunted at these times.
The slow-moving wind brought clean, woody scents. Iny slipped into the old fox castle, the entrance to which was surrounded by tiny bushes, and on its hill stood an enormous oak tree, the roots of which almost held the small mound of sand in their grip.
It was an old fox den. Not the best, because there was always sand in it – that spoiled the youngsters’ eyes -, but its repair was an easy task, and the food supply was a game around it.
Kag put the goose down at the entrance, and Iny pulled it in. The big goose completely filled the whole, but it moved. Kag, in its trail, grunted after it, because the sand had fallen on his nose.
-Quietly, Kag – whispered his wife -, they’re sleeping. . .
The narrow corridor became wider, and beyond the atrium, like a trough, the chamber rumbled, where in a black heap eight fox cubs sniffed quietly.
Iny smelled them.
-Aren’t they beautiful? Look, Kag!
Kag sat up in the small cave, and scratched, because he knew that there were many fleas inside of foxes.
-There will be strong, hanging foxes. It seems that they have a good mother. . .
Iny was sensitive.
-Beside you, Kag being a good mother is easy. But look. . . look. . .
The hairy ball began to move. A small, searching nose rose into the air, and although its eyes had barely opened, wading among the others – who had started to squeak -, it climbed over to the goose’s bloody neck, and started chewing.
Kag’s eyes glowed starkly.
-this reaches the most. In it is the blood of his grandfather, who was the first in the family line. Vuk will be his name, like his grandfather – he said. – Vuk, which means that all foxes will have to remain out of the way, when they start hunting. Help him, Iny!
This is my attempt at translating the first few pages of Vuk, by Fekete István. My understanding of literature is certainly beyond this level, but as this is a book relevant to Hungarian culture, I wanted to attempt as best as I could to translate some of it. I hope soon my understanding of the language can at least ensure that I understand the text, as I had to research most of the words in the text and put them together as best as I could with what I know of grammar.

I have a Bachelor's in Linguistics, and a TESOL cerification. I've been studying Hungarian on my own time for the last 4 1/2 years, and it is my absolute passion and interest to interpret and translate between it and my native language, English. I've spent the last 4 years studying other languages, such as Farsi, Spanish, Polish, and Japanese, but by far have spent the most time studying Hungarian. One of my close friends is a native Hungarian speaker I've aided with English greatly, and have taught much over the last 4 years. I live in Hungary now as well, and am attending a full-time language program to learn Hungarian further as well. I am also working in transcription, which I have 6 months of experience in. I can type consistently between 95-130 WPM, and do projects typing out audio in English, so I am just as interested in working in that field as well.
