This is a very difficult question to answer. I don´t think it has been properly resolved yet, mainly due to the many variables involved.
De Groot, in his famous work “Thought and Choice in Chess”, estimated that elite Grandmasters could see an averege of 6.8 moves ahead. However, when I looked at his calculations in more detail, I realised that this number was not arrived at very logically, as he only used one puzzle, and only counted variations based on their length, without checking their accuracy.
