We live in exactly one world, not two or three or seventeen. As far as we currently know, the most fundamental features of that world are as described by physics, chemistry, and the other natural sciences. But the existence of phenomena that are not in any obvious way physical or chemical gives rise to puzzlement. How, for example, can there be states of consciousness or meaningful speech acts as parts of the physical world? Many of the philosophical problems that most interest me have to do with how the various parts of the world relate to each other—how does it all hang together?—and much of my work in philosophy has been
addressed to these questions. The theory of speech acts is in part an attempt to answer the question, How do we get from the physics of utterances to meaningful speech acts performed by speakers and writers? The theory of the mind I have attempted to develop is in large part an attempt to answer the question, How does a mental reality, a world of consciousness, intentionality, and other mental phenomena, fit into a world consisting entirely of physical particles in fields of force? This book extends the investigation to social reality: How can there be an objective world of money, property, marriage, governments, elections, football games, cocktail parties and law courts in a world that consists entirely of physical particles in fields of force, and in which some of these particles are organized into systems that are conscious biological beasts, such as ourselves?

Vivemos em exatamente um mundo, não dois ou três ou dezessete. Até onde sabemos atualmente, as características mais fundamentais desse mundo são as descritas pela física, química e pelas outras ciências naturais. Mas a existência de fenômenos que não são, de nenhuma maneira óbvia, físicos ou químicos causa perplexidade. Como, por exemplo, pode haver estados de consciência ou atos de fala significativos como partes do mundo físico? Muitos dos problemas filosóficos que mais me interessam têm a ver com a forma como as várias partes do mundo se relacionam umas com as outras - como é que tudo se encaixa?- e muito do meu trabalho em filosofia tem sido dirigido a estas questões. A teoria dos atos de fala é, em parte, uma tentativa de responder à pergunta: Como passamos da física dos enunciados para atos de fala significativos realizados por falantes e escritores?
