Source text - English This year world environment day is focus on the illegal trade in wildlife. We have chosen this theme because damage from this trade has become so serious and far reaching that urgent action is needed to reverse it. Many people know that wildlife crime is driving species such as rhinos and tiger toward extinction. That is bad enough but perhaps even more alarming is that it is eroding our planets biodiversity and undermining the natural systems upon which we all depend. It is also destroying the natural capital in which many nations could build healthy tourism industries and deprives governments of much-needed revenue. It is spreading corruption and undermines the rule of law all around the world. And it is fattening the purses of the international crime syndicates that have come to dominate this business. This must stop and the time to take action is long overdue rising concern among citizens government’s conservationists, law enforcement agencies and many other quarters has driven this issue now to the very top of the UN Agenda tackling.
