Bio

As a native German speaker, professional translator, and international language services professional, I bring together linguistic expertise, cultural intelligence, and a global business perspective shaped by both professional experience and a lifetime of international exposure.

A lifelong connection to languages and cultures

Growing up in Germany, I had the opportunity to travel extensively throughout Europe, experiencing different languages and cultures firsthand. Rather than simply studying foreign languages, I was able to experience them in their natural environments—communicating with people in their own countries, observing cultural nuances, and developing an appreciation for the ways language reflects identity, traditions, and perspectives.

My international journey eventually led me to live in five different countries for extended periods of time. These experiences have profoundly influenced my understanding of cross-cultural communication, adaptability, and the subtleties that distinguish one language and culture from another.

They have also reinforced a belief that continues to guide my professional work: truly understanding a language means understanding the people and cultures behind it.

My professional journey

My career in the language services industry began as an independent English–German translator and owner of JANUSLINGUA LLC. This experience provided a strong foundation in linguistic precision, terminology research, client communication, and the importance of delivering translations that are both accurate and culturally appropriate.

Over the years, I expanded my professional expertise into translation project management, language operations, and international program management, collaborating with linguists, clients, and business partners across geographical and cultural boundaries.

This combination of hands-on translation experience and language-industry leadership has given me a valuable dual perspective: I understand the craftsmanship behind a successful translation as well as the broader business and communication objectives it serves.

A memorable translation experience

One of my particularly memorable assignments was translating a movie script from German into English.

Unlike conventional business or technical translation, a film script requires special attention to dialogue, characterization, tone, humor, and cultural context. The challenge lies not only in accurately conveying the original meaning but also in preserving the authentic voices of the characters and the emotional impact of the story.

This assignment was a rewarding opportunity to combine linguistic precision with creativity and cultural interpretation. It remains a meaningful example of why I find translation such an intellectually engaging profession.

My approach to translation

I believe that effective translation goes far beyond replacing words in one language with their equivalents in another. Every text has its own purpose, audience, tone, and cultural context.

My approach emphasizes:

Linguistic accuracy and authenticity: Producing clear, natural, and idiomatic translations while preserving the original message.

Cultural sensitivity: Recognizing nuances, expressions, and cultural references that may require thoughtful adaptation.

Attention to detail: Researching terminology and maintaining consistency in language, style, and meaning.

Professional reliability: Maintaining confidentiality, communicating clearly, and respecting project requirements and deadlines.

Client-focused collaboration: Understanding the purpose behind each assignment and delivering language solutions that support effective communication.

Beyond translation

My international upbringing, extensive travel experiences, and years spent living abroad have shaped both my professional outlook and personal interests.

I enjoy exploring the connections between languages, cultures, and people, and I value the perspectives gained through international experiences and meaningful cross-cultural relationships.

My background in international business and language program management further complements my linguistic expertise, allowing me to approach translation with an understanding of both cultural nuances and professional expectations.

My philosophy

Language is more than a means of communication—it is a gateway to understanding people, cultures, and perspectives.

For me, successful translation is about preserving not only what is said, but also what is meant, ensuring that a message resonates naturally and authentically with its intended audience.
