Source text - Portuguese O LARGO DA CARIOCA perdeu, em 1926, o chafariz que lhe deu nome, sob a justificativa de desafogar o trânsito da cidade. Para o alinhamento da avenida Treze de Maio, que vai do largo até a Cinelândia, demoliram não apenas essa fonte, como também o edifício da Imprensa Nacional, o Teatro Lírico e outras construções. Naquela época, o largo tinha dimensões muito menores do que as atuais. O chafariz ficava ao lado da estação de bondes para Santa Teresa e tinha a face voltada para o centro da praça, em direção às ruas Uruguaiana e Gonçalves Dias. À esquerda ficavam as escadarias do mosteiro e da igreja de Santo Antônio, e à direita, as ruas São José (trecho desaparecido) e República do Peru (atual Assembleia). O largo não era exclusivo para pedestres, como hoje em dia. O comércio variado da Galeria Cruzeiro atraía gente de toda parte da cidade e as linhas de bonde que passavam ali movimentavam o tráfego na região.
Translation - English In 1926, LARGO DA CARIOCA lost the fountain that gave it its name, under the justification of relieving the city's traffic. In order to align Treze de Maio Avenue, which runs from the square to Cinelândia, not only this fountain was demolished, but also the National Press building, Teatro Lírico and other buildings. At that time, the square had much smaller dimensions than today’s. The fountain was next to the Santa Teresa streetcar station and faced the center of the square, towards Uruguaiana and Gonçalves Dias streets. To the left were the steps of the monastery and the church of Santo Antônio, and to the right, the streets of São José (missing stretch) and República do Peru (current Assembleia). The square was not exclusively for pedestrians, as it is today. The varied commerce of Galeria Cruzeiro attracted people from all over the city and the streetcar lines that passed through the square kept traffic moving in the area.

Source text - English When thinking about removing all barriers, reimagining what we have known schooling to represent and be I keep returning to Ursula K Le Guin’s “The Dispossessed.” The vision, the model of what I am imagining schools can be is heavily influenced by Le Guin’s conception of the anarchist socialist society on the moon, titled Anarres in the novel. The social structure and relationships combined communal living, the greatest good, and scientific discovery. I believe reminaging schools will require a reimagining of society, government, and specifically the consolidation of power away from “profiteers.” I’ve read nearly a dozen of her sci fi novels over the past year, and her anti-capitalist philosophy has seeped into the ways I am able to dream and imagine a society and organizations of humanity. A Berkeley born author, she passed away in 2018 in her home in Portland, OR. One of my deepest regrets is I was unable to meet her or hear her speak in person.

A visão, o modelo do que eu imagino que as escolas podem ser, é fortemente influenciado pela concepção de Le Guin da sociedade socialista anarquista na lua, intitulada Anarres no romance. A estrutura social e as relações combinavam a vida em comunidade, o bem comum e a descoberta científica. Acredito que reinventar as escolas exigirá uma reinvenção da sociedade, do governo e, especificamente, a consolidação do poder longe dos "exploradores". Li quase uma dúzia dos seus romances de ficção científica no último ano, e a sua filosofia anti-capitalista se infiltrou nas minhas formas de sonhar e imaginar uma sociedade e organizações da humanidade. Source text - English Racial structure and the policy-making around it in South America has a completely different history than how it unfolded in North America in post-colonial times. This paper explores the case of how multiculturalism influences Brazilian society in contrast to the United States and the nuances of racial hierarchy that have affected the population and the collective imaginary of belonging since colonial times.
The narrative of post-racial ideology is still very present in public discourse in Brazil. This ideology is constructed by hindering and erasing racial differences in social inequality and denying the existent institutionalized and structural racism in the country. Even though the myth of racial democracy has shifted as one of the most significant paradigms in mainstream politics, the racialized forms of power are still a difficult topic for the media, scholars, activists and policy makers to address.
Translation - Portuguese A história da estrutura racial e da formulação de políticas em torno da mesma se desdobrou de formas completamente diferentes nas Américas do Sul e do Norte em tempos pós-coloniais. Este artigo explora como o multiculturalismo influencia a sociedade brasileira em contraste com os Estados Unidos e as nuances da hierarquia racial que afetaram a população e o imaginário coletivo de pertencimento desde os tempos coloniais.
A narrativa da ideologia pós-racial ainda está muito presente no discurso público no Brasil. Essa ideologia é construída através da obstrução e apagamento das diferenças raciais dentro da desigualdade social e da negação do racismo institucionalizado e estrutural existente no país. Embora o mito da democracia racial tenha se transformado em um dos paradigmas mais significativos da política dominante, as formas racializadas de poder ainda são um tópico difícil de ser abordado pela mídia, acadêmicos, ativistas e responsáveis políticos.
