English to Korean: Will this do? 이렇게 하면 되나요?
Source text - English However complex it must be in a variety of fields, my translation work will stand out because of my life in Korea and the US and professional experience with Korean, American and international folks in various fields including education and automotive automation.
During my 11 years in education, on top of teaching students and establishing F1 visa issueing school, I translated marketing scripts, legal and academic documents from Korean to English, and vice versa. And, more importantly, they were all accepted by schools and governments. Maybe I should've been paid more.
When I was in the automotive/automation field, whenever there were Korean and English speaking folks together at the same place, I had to perform impromptu live interpretations because, well, I was there. And again, both parties were successfully on the same page, which was crucial as a project was often worth multimillion US dollars. I definitely should've been paid more, but I digress.
That about sums my professional and formal translation/interpretation works.
But, as an informercial host would say, that's not all.
Some say any and all translation works will eventually be done by AI. And I mostly agree. Have you used search engine translators recently? They indeed have progressed very gracefully and much more useful than they ever were before.
I, however, believe quality translations done by humans are still necessary. For example, how should Boston accents be translated to Korean? How about those of always-busy New Yorkers? Laid back, yet all-knowing Southerners? Mellow Californians? Ghetto slangs? Ever evolving schooler's language? Memes? Korean dialects to English?
They are all tricky. Some might be downright impossible. But I would love to squeeze my brain in contribution of putting two vastly different cultures on the same page.
Who knows. Maybe, down the road, my work would contribute to perfecting AI, and ironically kills necessity of human translators. I'm not sure if I may find satisfaction in doing so, but I'm ready to find out.
