English to Portuguese: Between The Living And The Dead (Entre Os Vivos E Os Mortos) General field: Art/Literary
Source text - English I knew something was wrong when dusk wasn’t followed by night. It was happening again; my third time this year. The sun just set over the hills, but the light froze, as if a greedy hand had seized it and squeezed it. The motes of ashen light trickled through the violet clouds into my bedroom window. I passed my hand through the dull sunbeam, my brown color paling as it mingled with the dusk. Even my gold leaf bracelet lost its luster and glow. The hoarse calling of Tia Luz Marina for dinner time quieted and softened until her always angry-sounding voice was nothing but a hush.
That time, I held still and breathed slowly, slitting my eyes until my vision doubled. Focus on the intangible, I coaxed myself. The withered light impregnated every corner, every detail of my messy room. It turned into ghosts the coloring books, the woolen dolls, the half-empty bottles of acrylic paint. When it fell on the spirits of my deceased friends, Niko, and Angelica, sitting on the floor by my bed, it brought them further into focus.
The queer dusk light slipped into my short bathroom hallway and vanished. I stared at that dark entryway, convinced there was something more there. For years, I’d been telling Tia Luz Marina that there were ghosts in the bathroom, but she tossed the notion aside. She said believing in ghosts was a gringa thing. Yet, when I pressed her on ghosts and gods from stories of our Peruvian culture, she shied away.
I tossed six dice to Angelica, reassured that time had frozen. The clock’s hands didn’t move, and I couldn’t hear my Tia anymore. Like I said, that wasn’t my first time. People at school talked about hormones and pimples and sex. Yet, that stuff washed over me, like Tia Luz Marina’s comments that I was dishonoring our heritage. Yes, I didn’t know how to speak Spanish well, I dressed like an American, and I had no idea who my parents were or the rest of the family. But I am the new generation that lives in the new world. We are without roots.
I wished I knew what had happened in the last year. Why suddenly I began seeing dead friends and people walking in the streets. The dead strangers paid me no mind. They always seemed in a rush like they had crucial business to finish. My friends flocked to me and wanted to hang out exactly like how we used to before their death. We took walks together, we played, we joked around, we read, we poked fun at stodgy looking people. I knew I wasn’t crazy; the world shifted and dimmed around me every time, time pausing as if confused at the shifting reality.
I asked Angelica, “Where are you guys going tonight?”
“We’re going downstairs I think,” she said in her sweet, high pitched voice.
“Yeah, we went up last time and didn’t find anything cool. Besides, always going upstairs is boring,” Niko said after impatiently waited his turn, eyeing his Qwixx scoresheet anxiously.
“What is upstairs and downstairs?” I asked, already knowing the answer.
“We can’t tell you. Same reason you can’t come with us. Yet,” Angelica said, the dusk filtering into her blond hair.
Foque no intangível, eu me convenci.
English to Portuguese: The Black Veldt (A Pradaria Negra) General field: Art/Literary
Source text - English Carvel crawled out of the black burrow, stench of death heavy in the hot air. His lungs burned and his bones felt heavy as iron as he slunk worm-like through the rich loam, gagging and crying out in misery. Then he opened his eyes.
The abyss above his head lightened. A purple dawn broke.
Standing on weak legs, his thin, naked body covered in dirt and squirming grubs, he wiped himself off and stared around the odd savannah. The sky’s purple hue didn’t illuminate much, an ankle-high darkness covered the black veldt and Carvel couldn’t even see his own feet. He glanced over his shoulder. The warren he’d just crawled out of had completely vanished.
Looking up to the heavens, he shuddered. This was no true dawn. It seemed wrong. The sky was a mauve slate—devoid of stars, moon and sun. He couldn’t locate the source of illumination.
The violet sheen was ubiquitous, uncanny. It belonged in no natural sky. And with that thought Carvel realized this was not a natural place.
Sweat rolled off his body, the heat an oppressive force that broiled up from the black veldt’s shadows, not the eerie, glacial sky above.
He was a stranger to himself. Carvel didn’t know who or where he was. Didn’t know if he was asleep or awake. But he doubted either mattered. He understood this place, in some deep way, and knew that whether alive, dead or dreaming, realms like this penetrate every state of existence. And once they get a hold of you, they never let go.
Carvel soon realized he wasn’t alone.
Low, wild things brushed up against his legs and scrambled away, their rank fur matted with gore. They were hidden beneath that layer of shadow, murky as a pool of black water and rising, the darkness already up to Carvel’s knees.
A chorus of barks and yowls, grunts and vaguely human cackling broke out around him. Carvel instinctually knew this was the laughter of the disciples, messengers for the lords of this land. His welcoming committee. He could now feel their alien presence surrounding him, their spectral howls nearly deafening.
Wading forward into the suppurating darkness, he felt teeth bite into his legs, and he cried out, his heart slammed against his chest as schools of monstrous things gnashed at his thighs in the under-gloom. Bathed in a purple light from head to waist and covered in a living, ravenous darkness below, he ran, screaming in pain as fangs nipped at his balls and claws raked across his bare ass, the shade rising quickly now, up past his torso.
The purple sky flared brilliantly and he saw its source of light: a great eye-like disk burning in the heavens, saturnine and absolute. With a flash the sea of rising shadows disappeared.
He stared down and in a moment of stark terror realized his legs were no longer human, and that they were moving against his will along the veldt.
For a moment he could see all the four-legged creatures scurrying about. They possessed the bodies of beasts and the timeworn faces of Noachian men, but then they suddenly transformed, losing all physical substance and becoming nothing more than trails of light scouring the Cimmerian lea.
Carvel ran with them, his hooved feet beating against the veldt floor, enraptured by the mad symphony of grunts, cackles and howls ringing in his ears. He knew his destination, knew the forces that compelled his wild dash. The Masters of this Veldt. One appeared before him now.
