Rheologists might think that this is a useless tool. It indicates viscosity over a wide range of shear rates. However, if the PV and YP stay constant and the drilling fluid temperature does not change greatly, the funnel viscosity will remain constant. This means that if the Derrick man measures 46 s when he/she came on tour, and 46 s 6 h later, the PV and YP probably have not changed. However, if the funnel “viscosity” increased to 70 s, something happened to the drilling fluid. What happened cannot be ascertained from the funnel viscosity. The rheology needs to be examined with the concentric cylinder viscometer to see whether it is a solids problem or a chemical problem. It could indicate that the shale shaker screens have holes in them; it could indicate that a salt stringer was drilled.
