Bio
Thanks for visiting my profile. What follows is an abridged summary of my professional background as a translator and interpreter.

1) Academic background:
1) Five-year BA in Media Studies (Journalism) at Universidad Complutense (Madrid).
2) Six-year BA in Political Science and History at Universität Hannover (Germany). Thesis topic in the area of International Criminal Law: "The Creation of the International Permanent Criminal Court. A Chance for the Fostering and Protection of Human Rights?"

2) Professional experience:
After finishing my degree at Universität Hannover in 2001 I have devoted a great deal of my time to working as a translator and interpreter of English, German, French and Spanish. For over the last fifteen years I have been translating legal texts, especially in the area of family and criminal law as well as technical texts in several different areas. Legal translation and interpreting is not only my main activity field, but also one of my passions.

During my ten-year stay in Germany I translated for a law firm in Hanover (Lower Saxony) as well as for private companies. During the World Exhibition in Hanover in the year 2000, I was engaged by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Co-operation and Development to work as a guide for foreign delegations from developing countries.

3) Linguistic profile:
I am fully bilingual in German, practically bilingual in English, have a very good command of French and a smattering of Russian, a very difficult language I love boundless (not least due to my admiration for Fyodor Dostoyevsky´s Crime and Punishment, a masterpiece of universal literature). My (first) mother tongue is Spanish.

4) Average daily output:
Approximately 2,000 to 3,000 words depending on language combination, file format and difficulty of source text.

5) Rates:
All rates I apply depend on difficulty level, word volume and delivery deadlines. Please contact me personally for a detailed quotation applicable to your translation and/or interpreting project.

Further details and references will be submitted upon request.

Some quotes of my personal preference:

In my beloved English:
«To find the source, you must swim upstream.»
Confucius

Epitaph on Nikos Kazantzakis´grave in Heraklion (Crete):
Δεν ελπίζω τίποτα.
I hope for nothing. I fear nothing. I am free
No espero nada. No temo nada. Soy libre

I love poetry. How about you? If so, go ahead. I shall be pleased to share with you some of the poems that have touched my soul most deeply. E N J O Y !

In English: Emily Dickinson (1830-1886). Nobody knows this little Rose
Nobody knows this little Rose -
It might a pilgrim be
Did I not take it from the ways
And lift it up to thee.
Only a Bee will miss it -
Only a Butterfly,
Hastening from far journey -
On its breast to lie -
Only a Bird will wonder -
Only a Breeze will sigh -
Ah Little Rose - how easy
For such as thee to die!

In English: Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849). Fairy-Land (1829)
Dim vales- and shadowy floods-
And cloudy-looking woods,
Whose forms we can't discover
For the tears that drip all over!
Huge moons there wax and wane-
Again- again- again-
Every moment of the night-
Forever changing places-
And they put out the star-light
With the breath from their pale faces.
About twelve by the moon-dial,
One more filmy than the rest
(A kind which, upon trial,
They have found to be the best)
Comes down- still down- and down,
With its centre on the crown
Of a mountain's eminence,
While its wide circumference
In easy drapery falls
Over hamlets, over halls,
Wherever they may be-
O'er the strange woods- o'er the sea-
Over spirits on the wing-
Over every drowsy thing-
And buries them up quite
In a labyrinth of light-
And then, how deep!- O, deep!
Is the passion of their sleep.
In the morning they arise,
And their moony covering
Is soaring in the skies,
With the tempests as they toss,
Like- almost anything-
Or a yellow Albatross.
They use that moon no more
For the same end as before-
Videlicet, a tent-
Which I think extravagant:
Its atomies, however,
Into a shower dissever,
Of which those butterflies
Of Earth, who seek the skies,
And so come down again,
(Never-contented things!)
Have brought a specimen
Upon their quivering wings.

[Edgar Allan Poe, a genius second to none, wrote this enigmatic poem in 1829, when he was 20 years of age. I first read it in Madrid in 1987. I have been wondering ever since what the author tried to convey in his verses. I am still searching for an answer.]

In English: Robert Browning (1812-1889). Misconceptions
This is a spray the Bird clung to,
Making it blossom with pleasure,
Ere the high tree-top she sprung to,
Fit for her nest and her treasure.
Oh, what a hope beyond measure
Was the poor spray's, which the flying feet hung to, -
So to be singled out, built in, and sung to!

This is a heart the Queen leant on,
Thrilled in a minute erratic,
Ere the true bosom she bent on,
Meet for love's regal dalmatic.
Oh, what a fancy ecstatic
Was the poor heart's, ere the wanderer went on -
Love to be saved for it, proffered to, spent on.

[In loving memory of Sidmouth and the Connaught Gardens, 1990]

In German: Theodor Fontane (1819-1898).

In Spanish: Federico García Lorca (1898-1936). Soneto de la guirnalda de rosas
¡Esa guirnalda! ¡Pronto! ¡Que me muero!
¡Teje deprisa! ¡Canta! ¡Gime! ¡Canta!

quiebra juncos y arroyos delicados,
bebe en muslo de miel sangre vertida.

Pero, ¡pronto! Que unidos, enlazados,
boca rota de amor y alma mordida,
el tiempo nos encuentre destrozados.

In Spanish: Antonio Machado (1875-1939).

In Galician: Uxío Novoneyra (1930-1999). O grellear da fonte! (1954). From Os Eidos. Libro do Courel.
O grellear da fonte!
O camiño do monte!
Andando e vendo
A miña sombra correndo
a lúa nas penas o alento
o pensamento.
a mín non me poñen medo as figuras dos penedos.

[I am not Galician and do not master Galician, a language quite close to Castilian but with some essential distinctions. As a young man I spent some time in that beautiful region of northern Spain. My parents had the opportunity of meeting Uxío Novoneyra, one of the greatest poets in modern Galician language, and became close friends with him. Uxío was quite old at that time and died before I could meet him personally. Later, I got to know "Os Eidos" and fell in love with that book at once. This is a humble tribute to him and that mysterious and fascinating region called O Courel/Caurel, where he lived, loved and wrote.]

In French: Paul Verlaine (1844-1896). Il pleure dans mon coeur
Il pleure dans mon coeur
Comme il pleut sur la ville ;
Quelle est cette langueur
Qui pénètre mon coeur ?

Ô bruit doux de la pluie
Par terre et sur les toits !
Pour un coeur qui s'ennuie,
Ô le chant de la pluie !

Il pleure sans raison
Dans ce coeur qui s'écoeure.
Quoi ! nulle trahison ?...
Ce deuil est sans raison.

C'est bien la pire peine
De ne savoir pourquoi
Sans amour et sans haine
Mon coeur a tant de peine !

In Russian: Ossip Mandelstam/Осип Мандельштам (1891-1938). From Камень / Stone (1913)

[My Russian is still poor and thus I am unable to enjoy in Russian the full beauty expressed by Ossip Mandelstam in these unforgettable verses. I first came across this poem in a German rendering by Paul Celan. I became speechless. At that time, Russian was totally inaccessible to me. Little by little I am opening some paths to its core. I am posting a viable English translation of this poem by F. Virabeau/Viraboff (thank you!/շնորհակալություն).]

Of nothing should one speak,
And no one should one teach,
And the grieving and the good
Dark, animal soul:

No one does it want to teach,
Speech it does not know,
And like a dolphin swims
In the world’s gray undertow.

In Russian: Marina Tsvetaeva/Марина Цветаева (1892-1941). Имя твое/Your name. From Стихи к Блоку / Poems to Blok (1916)

English version by Ilya Kaminsky and Jean Valentine:

Your name is a—bird in my hand,
a piece of ice on my tongue.
The lips’ quick opening.
Your name—four letters.
A ball caught in flight,
a silver bell in my mouth.

A stone thrown into a silent lake
is—the sound of your name.
The light click of hooves at night
—your name.
Your name at my temple
—sharp click of a cocked gun.

Your name—impossible—
kiss on my eyes,
the chill of closed eyelids.
Your name—a kiss of snow.
Blue gulp of icy spring water.
With your name—sleep deepens.
