Translation - English Iran and the Lessons of the Cold War, by Daniel Vernet

The Iranian nuclear crisis is a real school case for the two doctrines that compete for the favours of American foreign policy officials. During the first term of George W. Bush, the realists had lost out to the interventionists. The former advocate a diplomacy based on the recognition of an international situation where American interests must be protected by establishing great alliances at the price of compromises including (those) with regimes that feel comfortable with the standards of liberal democracy.
The latter have been reincarnated as the neoconservatives. They want to use the power of the United States for the promotion of democracy throughout the world. To them, this is the best guarantee for American interests. They are the inheritors of those who, during the cold war, opposed detente and stood for a more vigorous rejection both of the USSR as a state and of communism as an ideology.
Their hour of glory came after the 11 September attacks. They convinced a George W. Bush, rather inclined to be cautious in his ignorance of international politics that the fall of the Taliban in Afghanistan and the overthrow of Saddam Hussein were the beginnings of of a new crusade for liberty.
