Translation - English Boys and girls have strong immune systems, adequate weight and good vision thanks to the provision of vitamin A and nutritional sprinkles
The provision of vitamin A and nutritional sprinkles to Bolivian girls and boys has had positive results. The children have grown and attained appropriate height and weight for their ages, and they now have good vision. Their immune systems are stronger, reducing the frequency of illnesses, particularly colds, and speeding recovery when illnesses do occur. Furthermore, through information provided by local clinics, their mothers have learned about the importance of the micronutrients in fortifying their children’s daily nutrition and the importance of providing a balanced diet based on foods that promote growth.
Mercedes, one of the mothers waiting for her daughter’s regular check-up at Hospital Mexico, in Sacaba, in the Department of Cochabamba, tell us, “Rosita is three years and seven months old. She’s big for her age. The doctor tells me her weight is good, at 17 kilos. She copes with colds better. Sometimes she gets sick, but not very sick. I think it’s because of everything they give her at the hospital – the vitamin A, the sprinkles. I’ve taken her to all the check-ups, always.”

Translation - English As markets now demand healthier, more natural products, Heifer International promotes the production and consumption of foods from confinement- and stress-free animals. Among these foods are cage-free eggs, which provide food for the farming families as well as enabling them to generate income through the sale of surplus eggs on the local and regional markets. The Rural Women Entrepreneurs project also seeks to strengthen the skills and capacities of the project participants by developing their business management skills and practices, to enable them to access funding sources and financial services. Finally, the project helps strengthen social capital in the women’s communities.
Among the pillars of the project is linking the producers of cage-free eggs with the local market and enhancing the coordination between the producers and cooperatives or social businesses (farmer-owned agricultural businesses, or FOABs) in Yucatan, Oaxaca, Chiapas and Puebla, using a variety of business models.
