Source text - English Of all the concepts fundamental to literary theory, none has a ionger and more distinguished lineage than the question of literary types, or genres. From Aristotle to Todorov and from Horace to Wellek and Warren, the topic of genre has remained one of the staples of theoretical discourse. As much as has been written on genre, however, the historical study of genre theory can hardly be characterized as a satisfying enterprise. The debate over genre has consistently taken place in slow motion. The decades - or even centuries - that have separated major genre theory statements have all too often led the debaters alternately to take disputed propositions for granted or to forget the very topic of the debate.
Translation - Italian Tra i concetti fondamentali della teoria letteraria nessuno ha un’origine più remota e blasonata della questione delle tipologie letterarie, o generi. Da Aristotele a Todorov, da Orazio a Wellek e Warren, il genere è rimasto uno dei fondamenti del discorso teorico. Nonostante la mole degli scritti sull’argomento, lo studio storico della teoria dei generi è lungi dal poter essere definito soddisfacente. Il dibattito sui generi si è sempre svolto con grande lentezza. Nei decenni, o addirittura secoli, intercorsi tra le principali affermazioni teoriche relative al genere, è accaduto spesso che i partecipanti al dibattito dessero per scontate le proposizioni da discutere o dimenticassero l’oggetto stesso della disputa.
