Source text - English Current anticoagulant therapy involves heparin or low molecular weight heparins (LMWH) and, for oral treatment, warfarin. However, the clinical use of these agents has several important drawbacks. Heparins must be administered parenterally and prolonged use may be associated with thrombocytopenia, while warfarin administration requires frequent monitoring and its efficacy may be significantly impacted by drug-drug and drug-food interactions.

Translation - Spanish El tratamiento anticoagulante actual involucra heparina o heparinas de bajo peso molecular (HBPM) y, para el tratamiento oral, warfarina. Sin embargo, el uso clínico de estos agentes tiene diversos inconvenientes importantes. Las heparinas deben administrarse por vía parenteral y su uso prolongado puede asociarse con trombocitopenia, mientras que la administración de warfarina requiere controles frecuentes y su eficacia puede modificarse de manera significativa por interacciones fármaco-fármaco y fármaco-alimentos.
