Source text - Italian Complesso scolastico a Tirana –Albania
“The rainbow is my favorite color” è il titolo di un libro italiano dedicato ad Aldo Van Eyck di cui ricordo in particolare i disegni, coloratissimi, della Hubertus House di Amsterdam caratterizzata, appunto, da sei differenti colori che accentuavano la linearità delle sue semplici geometrie.
Il complesso scolastico a Tirana si avvicina a quell’architettura per un’analogia della funzione e per la vivacità che regala ad un intorno, altrimenti, un po’ grigio.
A Tirana, la Compagnia di Maria, una Istituzione a carattere religioso, da molti anni impegnata in terra albanese, ha deciso di dare forma e sostanza ad un progetto di idee che divenisse un segno ed un simbolo per i piccoli utenti e per l’intera cittadinanza. Il nuovo complesso scolastico, che ospiterà una scuola media ed una scuola elementare, sorge in un’area periferica ma poco distante dal centro, delimitata a nord dall’autostrada Tirana-Durazzo, a sud da un piccolo fiume e a est e ovest da terreni incolti ed inedificati. La scuola si sviluppa secondo una direttrice nord-sud, in due livelli fuori terra e uno interrato. Il piano terra ospiterà la scuola elementare le cui aule si aprono verso l’esterno, verso uno spazio lasciato verde per le attività all’aperto.
Un percorso-ballatoio, al secondo livello, conduce invece alla scuola media e si affaccia a nord su di un piccolo patio creato dallo slittamento della facciata rispetto alle aule. A sud lo stesso ballatoio si affaccia sull’atrio di ingresso costituito da un doppio volume che riesce ad integrare spazi verticali e orizzontali, grazie anche ad un lucernario e a grandi vetrate a tutta altezza che rendono, permeabile la facciata da entrambi i lati.
Le viste della scuola offrono una varietà di colori e di scorci prospettici che rompono la monotonia e l’indifferenza dell’edilizia attigua.
Al centro del progetto c’è una semplicità geometrica accompagnata da una varietà nei colori e nei materiali utilizzati. Volumi e superfici si intersecano per dare movimento all’edificio.
L’ingresso principale interrompe i piani orizzontali, la canna fumaria diviene un piccolo totem, landmark riconoscibile anche da lontano, le lunghe finestre a nastro scandiscono la facciata ed alcuni pilotis, disposti in maniera casuale puntellano la zona del portico.
I pilotis sono l’unico elemento “disordinato” di questo progetto disposti liberamente come se fossero alberi, in un ordine casuale lungo l’asse del percorso, divenendo motivo ludico per il piccolo visitatore.
Differenti materiali distinguono le varie parti del progetto. Alla struttura dell’edificio in cemento armato si sovrappone il laterizio, il carton gesso, la lana di roccia, la pietra e l’intonaco.
Tutte le zone di connessione, compresi i due corpi scala sono rivestiti di una pietra locale chiamata “janina” molto simile al travertino italiano utilizzato invece in alcuni rivestimenti interni del corridoio al piano terra.
Nel rispetto del suo futuro utente la gomma per il rivestimento degli interni è antistatica, ecologica e fonoassorbente. Le pitture con le quali sono state tinteggiate le pareti intonacate sono ecologiche.
Translation - English The Tirana school complex (Albania)
“The rainbow is my favourite colour” is the title of an Italian book dedicated to Aldo Van Eyck, whom I remember in particular for his extremely colourful drawings in the Hubertus House in Amsterdam. The building is decorated using six different colours, each marking the linear geometry of its design.
The Tirana school complex can be compared with the Hubertus House in terms of function served and for using the same colourful tone to liven up the grey dullness of the surrounding area.
The Company of Mary, a religious Institute based in Tirana that has been working in Albania for many years, has decided to realise a project that could become a symbol both for the young users of the complex and for all the citizens of Tirana. The new school complex will be home to a primary school and a junior secondary school. It was built in the immediate outskirts of the city, not too far from the centre of Tirana. It is bounded on the North side by the Tirana-Durazzo motorway, on the South side by a small river, and on the East and West sides by uncultiveated land not yet become a building section. The school was built on a North-South axis and runs over three levels, two above ground and one underground. The classrooms on the ground floor, that will host the primary school, open on the outside grounds, on green areas for outdoor activities.
On the second floor, a balcony leads to the junior secondary school, ending on the North side onto a small patio originated by a slight extension of the front of the complex over the classrooms. On the south side, the balcony overlooks the entrance hall, a double volume which perfectly integrates vertical and horizontal spaces through the use of a skylight and ample glass windows running for the entire height of the building and allowing light to enter the building through the sides.
From the school building the visitor can enjoy colourful sights and interesting perspectives, breaking the dullness of the surrounding buildings.
The core of the project is the idea of geometrical simplicity combined with a variety of colours and materials. Volumes and surfaces are intertwined to give the building a better dynamism.
The main entrance interrupts the horizontal axis of the building, the chimney, a sort of small totem, becomes a landmark that can be seen from a distance. The front is rythmically interrupted by the tall windows and several pilotis placed at random pin-point the porch area.
The pilotis are the only “unplanned” element in the project and are placed at random as if they were trees, along the main axis of the building, opening the door to a world of games for the young visitors.
Different parts of the project have been realised using different materials. The frame of the building is made of reinforced concrete, covered by layers of bricks, plasterboard, mineral wool, stone and plaster.
All the connecting areas, including the two staircases, are coverd in a local stone called “janina”, very similar to the Italian travertine, used for some internal layers of the corridor on the ground floor.
For the beneft of the future users, the rubber used for the layering of the internal walls is antistatic, environemntal friendly and sound-absorbent. The paint used for the plastered walls is also environmental friendly.
