Source text - English Diabetic complications Eyes Blurred (unclear) sight This can happen when you first start treatment for diabetes. It happens because, before you had treatment, your body became dehydrated (dry) as your body tried to cope with the high blood glucose levels. When the blood glucose levels start to return to normal, there is an increase in fluid in the eye. This causes blurring of sight for a time. Cataracts This can happen when you have had diabetes for some time1, (years), and the blood glucose levels have been high. The glucose builds up in the lens of the eye making it cloudy, so light cannot pass through to the back of the eye (retina). There is an operation, which may be offered to remove the damaged lens and replace it with a plastic one. Retinopathy This is the name given to damage to the layer at the back of the eye2. If your blood glucose level is always high, then the small blood vessels in this layer become damaged. This can make the vessels develop small blisters which burst and cause bleeding in the eye. Sometimes the vessels leak and the fluid collects on the surface and form exudates (white deposits). When the retinopathy (damage to the retina)2 becomes quite serious, the body tries to make new blood vessels to improve the blood supply. These new vessels are very weak and can easily bleed and this can cause quite critical loss of sight. W momencie, gdy poziom cukru we krwi powraca do normy, zwiększa się poziom płynu w oku, co powoduje wystąpienie nieostrego widzenia. Katarakta Występuje wtedy, gdy chory cierpiał na cukrzycę przez dłuższy okres czasu1 (lata), a poziom cukru we krwi był wysoki. Wówczas cukier nagromadza się w soczewce powodując jej zamglenie, a światło nie dociera do dna oka (siatkówki). Pacjentowi można zaproponować zabieg chirurgiczny, podczas którego usuwa się uszkodzoną soczewkę zastępując ją plastikową. Retinopatia Retinopatia to uszkodzenie siatkówki2. Jeżeli poziom cukru we krwi jest zawsze wysoki, wtedy naczynka krwionośne siatkówki ulegają zniszczeniu. W rezultacie tworzą się na nich pęcherzyki, które pękają powodując krwawienie wewnątrz oka. Zdarza się, że naczynka krwionośne „przeciekają”, a wyciekający z nich płyn zbiera się na powierzchni tworząc wysięki (białe złogi). Kiedy retinopatia2 przechodzi w poważniejsze stadium, aby poprawić ukrwienie organizm stara się wytworzyć nowe naczynka krwionośne. Są one bardzo słabe i łatwo krwawią, co może doprowadzić do utraty wzroku. Aby wyleczyć zmiany w oku stosuje się zabiegi laserowe, jednak nie wszystkie uszkodzenia można usunąć laserem. Bardzo ważne jest systematyczne badanie wzroku, aby wszelkie zmiany mogły być leczone jak najwcześniej.
