Fig. 3).

Fig. 3).

Description
Optical module with integrated source of light
This invention relates to an optical module with a lens arrangement for the projection of electromagnetic radiation onto a picture receiver and with a source of light arranged in the environment of the radiation inlet area of the lens arrangement, whereby the lens arrangement and the source of light with a cover permeable to the electromagnetic radiation is provided, whereby the cover is provided with a radiation barrier, which is impermeable to radiation given from the source of light and prevents a direct linking of radiation delivered by the source of light on the lens arrangement .
This optical module is described in DE 103 60 762 A1.
A generic optical module is employed especially in the automobile industry. The optical module is used in camera-based systems for the increase of comfort as well as travel guidance systems. Some systems need a source of light, which predominantly delivers electromagnetic radiation within the infrared range to monitor the surrounding area which can be watched and evaluated. the environment to be observed can, for example, be the interior of a vehicle, e.g. for passenger recognition or the observation of reactions of the driver.
The applied source of light for a camera system of this type described above is accommodated frequently in different housings of the camera and arranged in spatial proximity to the camera. This approach is unfavourable due to high expenditure for such installation on a vehicle, because an electrical connection is necessary between the camera and the source of light, in order to operate the source of light synchronized with the camera.
There are also well-known arrangements, in which the source of light is arranged in housings different from the housing of the camera.
From the W0 03/105465 A1, an optical module is known in which light emitting diodes (LEDs) are arranged in the environment of the radiation inlet area of the lens arrangement, so that the optical module can also work in bad lighting conditions. The light emitting diodes are arranged in ring form around the lens arrangement, whereby the axes of the light emitting diodes include varying angles with the axis of the module. Thereby diffuse lighting is used to optically capture the object concerned, by illuminating uniformly. For the avoidance of unwanted optical effects, in particular due to lateral shift of light, darkening or the utilisation of total reflection is employed.
The task underlying the invention is basically to provide a generic optical module which is simple and economical to assemble and produces a reliable optical quality.
This task is solved with an optical module with the features of the patent claim 1. Favourable design results result from the dependent patent claims.
With the generic optical module according to invention the lens arrangement and the source of light are provided with a cover which is permeable to the electromagnetic radiation, whereby the cover is provided with a radiation barrier which is impermeable to the radiation delivered by the source of light and prevents a direct linking of the radiation delivered by source of light into the lens arrangement.
Thereby it is ensured that the electromagnetic radiation delivered from the source of light is cannot get into the radiation inlet area of the lens arrangement as scattered light, whereby a strongly improved image quality is attainable. The arrangement of a cover provides the advantage that the optical module is unsusceptible with respect to contamination, and however it is easily cleanable in case of possible contamination. Providing a cover which is permeable to the electromagnetic radiation delivered by the source of light like the electromagnetic radiation caught by the lens arrangement, exhibits the further advantage that the optical module can be integrated optically corresponding to a vehicle design.
The radiation barrier thereby can consist of any material, which blocks the electromagnetic radiation delivered by the source of light. The radiation barrier for example can be manufactured from plastic which includes a suitable additive, e.g. carbon black, to block this electromagnetic radiation. In Principle, metal is also a suitable material for the radiation barrier.
The radiation barrier is integrated in such a manner into the cover so that light fed into the cover cannot get in transverse direction toward the radiation inlet area.
Therefore a preferred arrangement is also provided in which the radiation barrier is arranged in a circular form around the radiation inlet area of the lens. By this it is ensured that no scattered light can arrive through the cover to the radiation inlet area.
It is further preferred, if the radiation barrier is so designed that it is adjacent to the lens holder of the lens arrangement. This arrangement also exhibits the above-mentioned advantage that it prevents intrusion of scattered light over or past the cover into the radiation inlet area.
A further purposeful embodiment provides for the radiation barrier to be connected with the cover positively. Thereby it results in a particularly simple assembly of the optical module, since a semi-finished material can be prefabricated from cover and radiation barrier, so that only the semi-finished material remains to be connected suitably with a housing of the optical module. There is specific advantage, if the radiation barrier and the cover are made in a single piece. This can take place for example in the manufacturing line with a two-component injection moulding process. The radiation barrier material is hereby permeable to electromagnetic radiation given by the source of light and absorbed by the lens arrangement. However the material of the radiation barrier is impermeable to these wavelengths. By this manufacturing process, it is furthermore ensured that an entry of scattered light into the cover is impossible.
A further embodiment provides for the cover to feature a structuring at least on its side of the source of light and lens arrangement.
In accordance with a further embodiment it is provided that the structure features a steering of the pattern of the beam of the electromagnetic radiation. The structuring can thereby affect the reflected beam angle of the source of light. In this way it is possible, with a special advantage, to apply the light source and semiconductor element to one or several common bearings, so that they exhibit approximately the parallel optic-axis.
To achieve a diffused light for uniform lighting of the captured object, a portion of the electromagnetic radiation is steered in different directions. In an appropriate way, the structuring within the radiation inlet area can take on the function of an additional lens in the lens arrangement. The use of the structuring makes it thus possible to influence the optical quality by way of coordination.
For obtaining an optically even surface of the cover and thus the optical module, the structuring is set up turned preferably to the side facing the source of light and/or the lens arrangement. As far as is necessary for reasons of basic functionality, such a structuring can additionally be provided on the exterior of the cover. It would also be conceivable to provide a structuring described exclusively on the exterior of the cover whereby the structuring is then designed in such a way that the path of rays of the module is not unfavourably optically affected.
In accordance with a further arrangement the cover exhibits a modified, even or homogeneous smooth surface on the side of the source of light and the lens arrangement inner side respectively. An improved optics of the optical module results and also a low dirt susceptibility as well as a better cleaning possibility is achieved.
A further feature is that the source of light is formed by one or more light emitting diodes or laser diodes, the lens arrangement is at least partly surrounded. The arrangement and the choice of the number of light emitting diodes take place after the requirements are given for illumination. The light emitting diodes can be arranged in ring form around the lens arrangement, however this is not compulsory.
It is further provided that the cover is positively integrated with a housing of the optical module. This measure guarantees that the scattered light cannot arrive between the housing and the covering, which would then reduce the optical qualities with an entry in the radiation entrance range.
Thereby it is preferred if the cover along with its arranged radiation barrier is latched to the housing. Thereby it results in simple assembly. It is further guaranteed that the cover can be changed in a simple way with this arranged radiation barrier, e.g to take care of changed environmental conditions.
In accordance with a further arrangement it is provided that cover feature another shape within the range of the lens arrangement, in particular another cross section in the range of the source of light. The cover of the optical module does not thereby have to be designed homogeneously over their entire surface. The cover can be adapted rather to the requirements of the source of light and the lens arrangement respectively, or generally the camera.
The invention is explained more closely in the following figures. They show:
Fig. 1 A first perspective view of the invented optical module,
Fig. 2 A cross section of optical module shown in Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 An enlarged cross section of the Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 A perspective view of a cover used in the invented module, and
Fig. 5 A further view of perspective of the cover from Fig. 4, whereby a section view is shown.
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of invented optical module 1. The exact design of the invention in accordance with optical module 1 emerges better than of Fig. 2, in which the section of the optical module 1 in accordance with Fig. 1 is illustrated.
The optical module 1 exhibits in a well-known way a lens arrangement 2 to the projection of electromagnetic radiation on a semiconductor element 15. This unit is also called a camera. The lens arrangement 2 is represented separately in a schematic way in the figure. The lens arrangement can feature one or more lenses. The design and arrangement of the lenses to one another can be selected according to the requirements. The semiconductor element 15 is placed in a carrier and lies in the optical path of rays to the lens arrangement.
Adjacent to a radiation entrance range 3 the lighting arrangement 2 is arranged by a source of light 4 in the form of one or several light emitting diodes 5 (LED) on a further carrier 17. The light emitting diodes 5 can thereby be arranged in ring form around the radiation entrance range 3. However this is not compulsory; if the number and the arrangement of light emitting diodes can, in principle, be arranged in the manner of choice, as far as the safe environment can be ensured by monitoring and surrounding properly illuminated. The light emitting diodes 5 on the carrier 17 are reset for the radiation entrance range 3, so that the electromagnetic radiation delivered by it, preferably not within a visible range of the light, can not illuminate directly by lens arrangement.
The radiation inlet area 3 is designed by a lens holder 11, which is arranged concentrically to the path of rays of the lens arrangement 2. The lens holder 11, because of its funnel shape, ensures that the picture quality taken up by the semiconductor element is not affected negatively due to the sideward electromagnetic radiation.
Before the lens arrangement 2 and the source of light 4 a permeable cover 6 is arranged for the electromagnetic radiation delivered by the source of light 4 and which can be taken up by the camera. The cover 6 encompasses a range 7, which covers the source of light and a range 8, which covers the lens arrangement. The ranges 7, 8 can be accomplished as single piece or two-piece. An optically homogeneous surface by the cover 6 from the exterior (see Fig. 1) can be implemented, whereby there results on the one hand in an advantageous optics of the optical module and on the other hand in low susceptibility with respect to contamination and a simple cleaning possibility obtained respectively.
Both the sections 7, 8 of the cover 6 are separated from one another by a radiation barrier 9, so that a light linking is blocked over the ranges 7, 8 of the cover. The radiation barrier 9 is impermeable for the spectrum delivered by the source of light 4 and blocks at least this frequency spectrum as well as the frequency spectrum, in which Semi-conductor element is sensitive. The radiation barrier 9 is realized advantageously in such a manner that the homogeneous surface from the exterior is not optically affected. The radiation barrier 9 is accomplished in such a manner that this is not at all or only feebly recognizable with difficulty both regarding their colour and also of their form.
In principle, the radiation barrier 9 can be made out of a any material, if it is guaranteed that this is impermeable for electromagnetic radiation in the work area by the source of light. Preferred Material to be considered is a plastic or a metal.
The radiation barrier 9 can be manufactured as separate unit of the cover 6 and as per manufacturing instructions by which they can be positively connectable. It is however also designed to manufacture the cover 6 and the radiation barrier 9 as a single unit which itself becomes an example
in the context of a two-component injection moulding process to realize the same.
The semi-finished material of cover 6 and radiation barrier 9 is closely measured regarding its geometrical dimensions in such a manner that the radiation barrier 9 borders the lens holder 11, or rather surrounds it, as shown in figures 2 and 3. On the other hand the radiation barrier 9 is continuous up to the outer side of the cover 6, whereby the linking of light over the cover 6 in the radiation inlet area of the camera is practically impossible.
The cover 6 is connected with the housing 10 in the example over a catch mechanism 12. This can be represented, as in Fig. 2, by a circulating groove 18 provided in the cover 6, into which a suitable section of the housing 10 can be pressed.
A better illustration of the cover 6 used on the housing 10 of the optical module is represented in Fig. 4. This figure shows the cover 6 in a perspective view from its rear side 13, 14 i.e. the side, which is assigned to the source of light 4 and the lens arrangement 2. From this representation it is well recognizable that the radiation barrier 9 is placed in ring form and extends over the rear 13, 14 of the cover 6. The diameter of the radiation barrier 9 is thereby selected in such a manner that this fits to the outside diameter of the lens holder 11 and is assembled under light pressure being applied (see Fig. 3). Thereby it is guaranteed that no scattered light can pass through in between the radiation barrier 9 and the lens holder 11 toward the radiation inlet area 3
From Fig. 5, which shows a cut section of the cover 6 as per Fig. 4 in a perspective view, it emerges that the radiation barrier extends over the entire thickness of the cover 6. From the figure it is further seen that section 8 of the cover 6, to which the lens arrangement 2 is arranged, exhibits a different cross section 5 to that of the section 7 of the cover 6. The sections 7, 8 of the cover 6 can be adapted thereby to the respective requirements of the camera and the source of light respectively. It is especially conceivable to provide the section 7 of the cover 6 section in sections with a structuring e.g. the beam trajectory of the electromagnetic radiation delivered by the source of light is steered into a desired area. Likewise the structuring of the section 8 can be built in such a manner that this section takes an optical function in the direction of the lens.
The structuring is preferably provided solely on the backside 13, 14 of the cover 6, so that the optics, which essentially determined through the front of the cover 6, is not affected for the viewer.
It is preferred that that the source of light is synchronized with the camera in such a manner when the optical module is operated, i.e. a lighting of the environment takes place only if a picture is recorded by the camera (more exactly by the semiconductor element). Thereby it is guaranteed that no heat problem results from the source of light, as would happen during a continuous lighting.
With the above invention, an optical module is readily set for a travel assistance system, as it is possible to integrate this in an inconspicuous way into a vehicle and to make possible a good quality of pictures which can be taken by the camera.

Fig. 3).

Fig. 3).

Fig. 3).

Fig. 3).
