Source text - English There’s nothing more effective than the topic of networking to make people’s eyes glaze over at a cocktail party and have them mentally pacing the number of steps between you and the door. Thankfully Windows Vista can free you from the complex, mundane tasks that make you feel like you’re working as an unpaid system administrator for your household. It will let you get on with actually enjoying the benefi ts of setting up a home network – like listening to the music stored on your PC upstairs while you’re relaxing in the lounge on your laptop (see ‘Set up media sharing in five minutes’ below for the full rundown of what you need to do).
English to Portuguese: Secrets of the synchroton General field: Tech/Engineering Detailed field: Physics
Source text - English The synchrotron here consists of four main parts, the first of which is an electron gun. Sitting at the heart of the facility, this gun is responsible for generating electrons – by heating a high-voltage cathode in a vacuum – and then forcing them to bunch up together and compress into compact groups; the latter is achieved by passing the beam of electrons through a cavity where an alternating electric field is active.
From the bunching cavity, a beam of compressed groups of electrons passes into a linear accelerator. This part of the synchrotron uses a series of electric fields to force the compressed groups of electrons in the stream to accelerate to close to the speed of light and up to a charge level of approximately 100 MeV. From here the sped-up bunches of electrons are injected into the booster synchrotron.
The booster synchrotron sits just off the linear accelerator. It is a 158m (518ft), ‘O’-shaped stainless-steel tube vacuum surrounded by magnets that sits within the synchrotron’s storage ring and other facilities. This smaller synchrotron receives the electrons and then, with the help of 36 dipole magnets, bends them around the vacuum circuit while they are accelerated further up to the necessary extraction energy of three GeV. Travelling at almost the speed of light and carrying an insane energy level, the electron bunches are lastly injected into the synchrotron’s storage ring.
Translation - Portuguese O sincrotrão é composto por quatro partes
O sincrotrão Booster fica à saída do acelerador linear.
anel de armazenamento do sincrotrão e outros
componentes.
armazenamento do sincrotrão.
English to Portuguese: Canon 70D review General field: Tech/Engineering Detailed field: Photography/Imaging (& Graphic Arts)
Source text - English The Canon 70D has a dedicated
phase-detection sensor for use when
your images are composed in the
viewfi nder. This has 19 AF points, all
of which are cross-type, just like the
Canon 7D’s AF system. However, the
two cameras’ AF systems aren’t
identical, as the 70D only has three
AF point selection modes.
Improving on the 5.3fps maximum
continuous shooting speed of the
60D, the 70D can shoot at up to 7fps
at full resolution for up to 65 JPEGs
or 16 raw fi les. This is very useful
when shooting sport.
Meanwhile, sensitivity may be set
in the native range of ISO 100-12800
with an expansion setting allowing
the equivalent of ISO 25600. The top
native setting, ISO 12800, is an
expansion setting on Canon’s other
enthusiast SLRs.
Canon was the fi rst manufacturer
to give an SLR a touch-sensitive
screen. The 70D has a three-inch
1,040,000-dot LCD that can be used
to make settings adjustments and
scroll through images. Canon hasn’t
added the touchscreen functionality
at the expense of buttons or dial
controls: the 70D has all the physical
controls that you’d hope for. Then
there’s Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi connectivity is
fast becoming one of the must-have
features for cameras, and the 70D
does not disappoint.
Canon has also included a few
features to enable more creative
images to be captured. There’s a
built-in Speedlite transmitter,
for example, which gives wireless
control over multiple Canon EX
fl ashguns, a multi-exposure mode
and an HDR mode that combines
three images to create one with a
greater range of tones.
There’s also a collection of Creative
Filters that can give JPEGs a particular
look when shooting in Live View
mode. While it’s disappointing that
these can’t be used when shooting
raw simultaneously, or when using
the viewfi nder, they can be applied
post-capture in review mode, so it’s
possible to retain a ‘clean’ image as
well as one with the fi lter effect.
English to Portuguese: Captain Philips review on Empire magazine General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Cinema, Film, TV, Drama
Source text - English “Everything going to
be okay.” You’ll hear that line, or
subtle variations thereof, repeated
many times during Captain Phillips.
It’s an unsettling and ironic mantra
and, given it’s spoken by a Somali
pirate, also the hollowest of
reassurances. And yet, crucially,
it never plays as a veiled threat.
Partly this is due to an impressive
performance by first-time Somali
actor Barkhad Abdi, as pirate
lieutenant Muse. But also due to
a level of emotional (and political)
complexity we should have come
to expect from both writer Billy
Ray (Shattered Glass, Breach) and
director Paul Greengrass. If you
came here for a ‘Go America!’ tale
of bright Yankee perseverance amid
dire straits and dark intentions
far overseas, you got off at the
wrong port. This is a tale less
of heroism-versus-villainy than
different shades of victimhood.
As you’d expect, on the
Greengrass spectrum Captain
Phillips is closer to United 93 than
The Bourne Ultimatum: based on
recent true events, with an evenhanded,
detail-heavy procedural
approach that in no way constrains
psychological and emotional
exploration. It provides a kind of
comfort zone for Greengrass, but
this is clearly where he does his best
work, so it is also a welcome return
to form after he came unstuck trying
to dredge mainstream thrills from
non-existent Iraqi WMD in 2010’s
Green Zone. As in United 93,
Greengrass aims to present reality
through a clear, documentarian
lens, observing things as they
likely happened, blow by horrible
blow, rather than filtered through
Hollywood clichés. There are
no cutaways to desk-thumping
Pentagon guys, tie-straightening
politicos, or hand-wringing relatives
gathered around TVs. Once Phillips
leaves the US, so do we. Unless you
view the casting of Tom Hanks
cynically — and we don’t — there is
no attempt to crassly crowdplease.
Yet it still has all the momentum
and clench-strength to do exactly
that: please crowds. After brief
parallel set-ups in Vermont, USA
and Eyl, Somalia, during which
there’s some thematically ripe
dialogue (“Gotta be strong to
survive out there,” Phillips tells his
wife Andrea, played by Catherine
Keener, while discussing their kids
on a drive to the airport), the action
thunders along while relentlessly
maintaining tension.
Greengrass has a passion for
detail: after an hour you’ll know
how to repel assault rifle-wielding
pirates if you don’t have access to
firearms, and how to react if they
do fight their way onto the decks. What is most surprising is
how it is the pirates, rather than
the seamen, who have the odds
stacked against them. Phillips’ ship
is an immense metal hulk festooned
with high-pressure water cannons.
“We got the speed, we got the
height, we got the hoses,” insists
Phillips. As an audience, we are so
used to rooting for underdogs that
there’s a temptation to applaud
Muse and his three (three!)
companions once they do board,
especially as we’ve had a brief
insight into the impoverished and perilous circumstances which
induced them to do so. “No
al-Qaeda here,” Muse ‘assures’
Phillips once he’s taken nominal
control. “Just business.”
Even later, once Phillips —
“Irish” to his captors — has been
taken hostage and the drama
transfers to the claustrophobic,
hotbox confines of a hijacked
lifeboat floundering toward the
Somali coastline, Muse and his
boys (for they are barely men)
attract the full might of the
US Navy. “There’s got to be something other than fishing and
kidnapping people,” Phillips says to
Muse while the shadow of a warship
falls over them. “Maybe in America,
Irish, maybe in America,” Muse
shrugs.
This exchange may seem heavily
loaded, but Abdi and Hanks handle
it with compelling sincerity. At first,
the role of Phillips doesn’t feel like
too much of a stretch for Hanks:
part Catch Me If You Can’s Carl
Hanratty with its no-nonsense
Bostonian bark, part Cast Away’s
Chuck Noland, a clear-headed
professional hurled into extreme
calamity. But by the devastating
(yet quiet and intimate) final scene,
the differences are obvious and
acute. Throughout his crisis, Phillips
is a man running with a bowl of
water, desperate not to spill a drop,
desperate not to slow down. As
well as suffering an ordeal, he is
also experiencing a kind of alien
encounter. Except, of course, he is
no more or less human than those
at the other end of the guns so
regularly pressed into his face.
There is no hoary ‘we’re just the
same, you and I…’ moment. His
attackers are firmly separated from
him by geography, culture and a
generation, but there is desperation
and a kind of naivety, carefully
portrayed, on both sides. Just as
Phillips can’t fathom how there is
no alternative to fishing and piracy
for these kids, the pirates themselves
fail to accept that, no, everything is
not going to be okay.
Translation - Portuguese “vai tudo correr bem.”
Ouvimos esta frase, ou subtis
variações, muitas vezes durante
Capitão Philips. É um mantra
inquietante e irónico e, dado que é
proferido por um pirata somali,
também a mais oca das garantias. E,
contudo, nunca funciona como
ameaça velada. Em parte devido ao
incrível desempenho do estreante ator
somali Barkhad Abdi, na pele do
tenente pirata Muse. Mas também
devido ao nível de complexidade
emocional (e política) que já nos
habituamos a esperar quer do
argumentista Billy Ray (Verdade ou
Mentira, Quebra de Confiança), quer
do realizador Paul Greengrass. Se vai à
procura de uma história de “Força,
América!” sobre a perseverança
ianque por entre situações de apuros e
intenções obscuras num mar
longínquo, dê meia-volta. Esta é uma
história menos de heroísmo vs. vilania
e mais diferentes matizes de
vitimologia.
Como seria de esperar, no espetro
Greengrass Capitão Phillips está mais
perto de Voo 93 do que de Ultimato:
baseado em recentes acontecimentos
reais, com uma abordagem imparcial e
recheada de detalhes que de forma
alguma reprime a exploração
psicológica e emocional. Dá a
Somália, durante as quais há alguns
diálogos adultos (“Tem de se ser forte
para sobreviver lá fora”, diz Phillips à
sua mulher Andrea, desempenhada
por Catherine Keener, enquanto falam
dos filhos, no carro, a caminho do
aeroporto), a ação explode mantendo
implacavelmente a tensão.
temos a velocidade, a altura e as
mangueiras”, insiste Phillips. Como
público, estamos tão habituados a
sobem a bordo, principalmente
Irlandês”, responde Muse, a encolher
os ombros.
Esta troca pode parecer uma carga
pesada, mas Abdi e Hanks tratam dela
com uma sinceridade envolvente.
Inicialmente, o papel de Phillips não
parece representar grande esforço para
Hanks: meio Carl Hanratty de
Apanha-me se Puderes com o seu latido
sério de Boston, meio Chuck Noland
de O Náufrago, um profissional
perspicaz atirado para uma extrema
calamidade.
ingenuidade cuidadosamente
retratados dos dois lados. Tal como
Phillips não consegue perceber como é
que estes miúdos não têm alternativa a
pescar e piratear, os piratas não
aceitam que, não, nem tudo vai correr
bem.
English to Portuguese: How to take pictures on dull days General field: Tech/Engineering Detailed field: Photography/Imaging (& Graphic Arts)
Source text - English Fortunately, modern digital cameras are
exceptionally good at dealing with low light
and are capable of producing exquisitely
detailed images in the dullest weather
conditions imaginable. Add to this the
capabilities of post processing software
that allows you to bring out the fine
nuances of tone, colour, contrast and detail
from your RAW files and you have the tools
to create amazing pictures irrespective of
how bad the light might appear to be.
Of course you have to choose your
subject with care. One ingredient that
arguably works better than anything else
in dull weather is water. Whether as a
reflective surface, flowing through a
landscape, or lapping onto a beach, water
gives you something to work with in a
creative sense. In dull light, when light levels
are inevitably lower than on a bright day,
you have the luxury of being able to shoot
moving water at slow shutter speeds to create silk-like ribbons through the
landscape. If dreamy waterscapes
are your thing, find fast-flowing
water, which might be anything
from a tumbling mountain stream
to waves crashing over a rocky
coast. Waterfalls are also perfect
for this treatment, but try to avoid
any with too much white water, as
this will be recorded as a
featureless amorphous empty
space. Instead look for water that
falls in thinner rivulets, or fans out
and breaks up as it cascades over
rocks. This will form a more
pleasing pattern and will show up
more distinctively against the
darker surroundings. Often the
most impressive looking waterfalls
don’t make the best pictures.
On calm days, pools, lakes and
even the sea act as a mirror to
create perfect reflections of
buildings, trees or mountains. In
most cases is advisable to crop
out the pale sky by using a short
telephoto zoom in the range
70-200mm. This helps to
concentrate attention on the
main subject to form a simple but
striking composition. Experiment
with the framing in terms of the
ratio of the subject to its
reflection, which can be a very
precise central split or a 1/3 to
2/3 composition. Alternatively,
shooting the reflection alone –
especially if there are small ripples
in the water – can create very
effective images.
Away from water, think in
terms of creating miniature
landscapes by honing in on a
smaller section of the wider
landscape. Again, it is often best
to avoid the sky in your pictures
and instead concentrate on
forming interesting compositions
from the juxtaposition of key
features such as walls, trees,
isolated buildings or distinctive
patterns in the landscape. Strong
colour combinations also work
very effectively. Above all, keep
your compositions simple with
a clear focal point to create
images that have a strong graphic
appeal. Once you start down this
road you’ll discover plenty of inspiration the next time you go
out shooting in dull weather.
Translation - Portuguese Felizmente, as modernas câmaras digitais
nublado é a água.
escuro. As cascatas mais
imponentes não costumam fazer
as melhores fotos.
Em dias calmos, poças, lagos e
até o mar funcionam como
espelho para criar reflexos
perfeitos de edifícios, árvores ou
serras. Na maior parte dos casos,
recomenda-se eliminar o céu
pálido usando um curto zoom de
teleobjetiva de 70-200 mm. Isto
ajuda a concentrar as atenções no
assunto principal para formar uma
simples mas atrativa composição.
Experimente várias proporções do
assunto em relação ao seu reflexo,
o que pode ser uma fenda central
muito precisa ou uma composição
de 1/3 a 2/3. Em alternativa,
fotografar só o reflexo, sobretudo
se a água fizer pequenas
ondulações, poderá criar imagens
muito eficazes.
Água à parte, pense em criar
paisagens em miniatura
concentrando-se numa zona
pequena de uma paisagem mais
ampla.
paisagem. Combinações de cores
fortes também resultam muito
bem. Acima de tudo, faça
composições simples com um
ponto focal claro para criar
imagens com um forte apelo
gráfico. E verá que vai descobrir
muita inspiração a próxima vez
que sair num dia nublado.
English to Portuguese: LG G2 General field: Tech/Engineering Detailed field: Media / Multimedia
Source text - English LG’S MOBILE PHONES DISAPPOINTED
for years, but that changed with its low-price,
high-spec “Google” Nexus 4. Not only was it
a brilliant handset, but it became a runaway
success as the fl agship phone everyone could
afford. Can the same trick be repeated with
a handset that’s not being subsidised and
promoted by Google? Quite possibly, actually.
Taking on the likes of the Samsung Galaxy
S4 for screen real estate, the G2 rocks a
mammoth 5.2-inch screen with a full-HD,
1080p resolution. That’s smaller than the Note
2, but LG says it’s the largest phone that can
be used one-handed – them’s fi ghting words –
thanks to a bezel that clocks in at just 2.65mm;
which is itself thanks to LG’s Dual-Routing
technology that splits the touch sensors into
two smaller modules instead of a single big one.
That seems a more signifi cant innovation
than the one most early reports concentrated
on: the absence of any buttons on the front or
side. Yes, the G2’s volume controls and lock
button are ’round the back. According to LG
this is a more natural way of using the phone,
and it does have a pleasing, decluttering effect.
You still unlock on the front, but it’s by tapping
twice on the display, a function LG dubs
“KnockON”, which will confuse rugby fans.
Inside, LG’s fl agship has no shortage of
silicon, with Qualcomm’s state-of-the-art
Snapdragon 800 2.2GHz quadcore powering
matters. By using graphics-specifi c RAM
the G2 is able to reduce battery usage on
still images by up to 26 per cent making the
3,000mAh battery work harder and longer.
LG hasn’t skimped on the camera. Despite
being only 8.9mm deep, the G2’s 13-meg effort
has proper, optical image stabilising and
multi-point autofocus. On paper, that should
make it a match for the Galaxy S4, HTC One
and maybe even Nokia’s Lumia range.
Not content with sucking up to
photographers, the G2 aims to tickle the
golden ears of audiophiles, with support for
24 bit/192kHz audio playback – another fi rst
on a phone. Play compatible, lossless tunes
through it and the regular mobile boast of
“studio-like quality” sound could actually
come true for a change.
A raft of LG-specifi c apps include Text
Link, which embeds information such as
map directions directly into your messages,
and Quick Remote that lets you control your
TV, stereo etc via infrared, having sucked the
knowledge from your existing remotes.
If there’s an issue with the G2, it’s
aesthetic: this is a phone with almost zero
visual wow factor. Still, that didn’t hold back
the Nexus 4 and there’s no reason to think it’ll
do so here. The G2 may not be good-looking,
but it sure does look good.
Translation - Portuguese Fazendo frente a nomes como Samsung
Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 a 2,2 GHz. Usando
Ouça faixas lossless compatíveis e a

Source text - English Arguably the most famous heavy bomber of World War II, the Avro-built Lancaster undertook some of the most dangerous missions in the conflict. Intended as a night bomber but often used in the day too, the Lancasters under Bomber Command flew some 156,000 sorties during the war, dropping 609,000 tons of bombs. Among these was the ‘bouncing bomb’ designed by British inventor Barnes Wallis for the Dambuster raid of 1943.
Wallis devised the bomb in order to destroy dams in Germany’s Ruhr Valley. The dams were significant as the Ruhr region was one of the country’s main industrial areas, with arms, vehicles and raw materials feeding the Nazi war machine. If the dams were breached then production in the region would be greatly reduced, aiding the Allied cause.
The weapon’s design was simple yet complex. The bomb consisted of a cylindrical drum housing almost 3,000 kilograms (6,615 pounds) of high explosive that would detonate at the base of a dam with hydrostatic pistons. The real challenge was getting the bomb into position.
Multiple steel-linked torpedo nets protected the dams of the Ruhr. These would snag any incoming underwater missiles and prevent any explosion near the dams’ bases. Wallis’s bomb, however, was designed to skim across the surface of the water, effectively jumping over the nets and then careering into the dam.
To achieve this, the bomb needed to be dropped at a specific height and speed, with a pre-loaded backspin. This backspin was integral as it both increased bounce height on contact with the water and also reduced speed, so the Lancaster had a chance to fly clear.
Wallis’s bombs were eventually put to use in Operation Chastise on 16 May 1943, in which 19 bombing aircraft and 113 attack fighters descended on the Ruhr Valley. Two major dams were breached by the bouncing bombs, causing massive flooding and significant loss of civilian life. This Allied success came at a cost though, with eight of the bombing aircraft shot down, along with 53 of the fighter planes.
ordens do Bomber Command fizeram 156 mil
saídas durante a guerra, largando 609 mil
toneladas de bombas. Entre estas estava a
“bomba de ressalto” inventada por Barnes
Wallis para o ataque dos Dambusters em 1943.
Wallis concebeu a bomba para destruir
barragens do Vale do Ruhr, Alemanha. As
barragens eram importantes, porque a região do
atacaram o Vale do Ruhr. Duas grandes
barragens foram atingidas pelas bombas,
provocando enormes inundações e significativas
perdas de vidas humanas civis. Mas o sucesso
dos Aliados teve um preço: oito bombardeiro
foram abatidos, juntamente com 53 caças.
